Anomalies in Quantum Mechanics: the 1/r^2 Potential

An anomaly is said to occur when a symmetry that is valid classically becomes broken as a result of quantization. Although most manifestations of this phenomenon are in the context of quantum field theory, there are at least two cases in quantum mechanics--the two dimensional delta function interaction and the 1/r^2 potential. The former has been treated in this journal; in this article we discuss the physics of the latter together with experimental consequences.

Quantum Corrections to the Reissner-Nordström and Kerr-Newman Metrics

We use effective field theory techniques to examine the quantum corrections to the gravitational metrics of charged particles, with and without spin. In momentum space the masslessness of the photon implies the presence of nonanalytic pieces $\sim \sqrt{-q^2},q^2\log -q^2$ etc. in the form factors of the energy-momentum tensor. We show how the former reproduces the classical non-linear terms of the Reissner-Nordström and Kerr-Newman metrics while the latter can be interpreted as quantum corrections to these metrics, of order $Gα\hbar/mr^3$

Allowed Eta Decay Modes and Chiral Symmetry

Recently, the development of chiral perturbation theory has allowed the generation of rigorous low energy theorems for various hadronic processes based only on the chiral invariance of the underlying QCD Lagrangian. Such techniques are highly developed and well tested in the domain of pionic and kaonic reactions. In this note we point out that with the addition of a few additional and reasonable assumptions similar predictive power is available for processes involving the eta meson.

GDH2000 Convenor's Report: Spin Polarizabilities

The subject of low energy polarized Compton scattering from the proton, which is characterized by phenomenological spin-polarizabilities, is introduced and connection is made to new theoretical and experimental developments which were reported to this meeting.

Neutrinos and the Standard Model

Since their "discovery" by Pauli in 1930, neutrinos have plaed a key part in confirmation of the structure of the standard model of strong and electroweak interactions. After reviewing ways in which this has been manifested in the past, we discuss areas in which neutrinos continue to play this role.

Introduction to Effective Field Theory

An introduction to methods of effective field theory is given. Examples are presented, including Rayleigh scattering from nonrelativistic quantum mechnics, chiral perturbation theory/QCD as well as electromagnetic and weak interactions of nucleons.

Effective Interactions are Effective Interactions

The subject of effective interactions is introduced and applications in both quantum mechanics and quantum field theory are presented. In particular the use of chiral perturbation theory as an effective low energy description of QCD is developed and it is argued that such methods rally are effective in both the meson and baryonic sectors.

Higher Order Polarizabilities of the Proton

Compton scattering results are used to probe proton structure via measurement of higher order polarizabilities. Values for $α_{E2}^p,β_{E2}^p,α_{Eν}^p,$ $β_{Eν}^p$ determined via dispersion relations are compared to predictions based upon chiral symmetry and from the constituent quark model. Extensions to spin-polarizabilities are also discussed.

Resonances in weak nonleptonic Omega^- decay

We examine the importance of J^P = 1/2^+, 1/2^- resonances for weak nonleptonic Omega^- decays within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. The spin-1/2 resonances are included into an effective theory and tree contributions to the Omega^- decays are calculated. We find significant contributions to the decay amplitudes and satisfactory agreement with experiment. This confirms and extends previous results wherein such spin-1/2 resonances were included in nonleptonic and radiative-nonleptonic hyperon decays.

Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory with Light Deltas

We demonstrate how heavy mass methods, previously applied to chiral perturbation theory calculations involving the interactions of nucleons and pions, can be generalized to include interactions with the $Δ(1232)$ in a systematic formalism which we call the "small scale expansion."
