Spin Dynamics in a Stripe-ordered Buckled Honeycomb Lattice Antiferromagnet Ba$_{2}$NiTeO$_{6}$

We carried out inelastic neutron scattering experiments on a buckled honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_{2}$NiTeO$_{6}$ exhibiting a stripe structure at a low temperature. Magnetic excitations are observed in the energy range of $\hbar ω\lesssim 10$ meV having an anisotropy gap of 2 meV at 2 K. We perform spin-wave calculations to identify the spin model. The obtained microscopic parameters are consistent with the location of the stripe structure in the classical phase diagram. Furthermore, the Weiss temperature independently estimated from a bulk magnetic susceptibility is consistent with the microscopic parameters. The results reveal that a competition between the NN and NNN interactions that together with a relatively large single ion magnetic anisotropy stabilize the stripe magnetic structure.

Phase diagram and neutron spin resonance of superconducting NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As

We use transport and neutron scattering to study the electronic phase diagram and spin excitations of NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As single crystals. Similar to Co- and Ni-doped NaFeAs, a bulk superconducting phase appears near $x\approx2\%$ with the suppression of stripe-type magnetic order in NaFeAs. Upon further increasing Cu concentration the system becomes insulating, culminating in an antiferromagnetically ordered insulating phase near $x\approx 50\%$. Using transport measurements, we demonstrate that the resistivity in NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As exhibits non-Fermi-liquid behavior near $x\approx1.8\%$. Our inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal a single neutron spin resonance mode exhibiting weak dispersion along $c$-axis in NaFe$_{0.98}$Cu$_{0.02}$As. The resonance is high in energy relative to the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ but weak in intensity, likely resulting from impurity effects. These results are similar to other iron pnictides superconductors despite the superconducting phase in NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As is continuously connected to an antiferromagnetically ordered insulating phase near $x\approx 50\%$ with significant electronic correlations. Therefore, electron correlations is an important ingredient of superconductivity in NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As and other iron pnictides.

Polarized neutron scattering on HYSPEC: the HYbrid SPECtrometer at SNS

We describe some of the first polarized neutron scattering measurements performed at HYSPEC spectrometer at the Spallation Neutron Source, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. We discuss details of the instrument setup and the experimental procedures in the mode with full polarization analysis. Examples of polarized neutron diffraction and polarized inelastic neutron data obtained on single crystal samples are presented.

"Forbidden" phonon: dynamical signature of bond symmetry breaking in the iron chalcogenides

Investigation of the inelastic neutron scattering spectra in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ near a signature wave vector $\mathbf{Q} = (1,0,0)$ for the bond-order wave (BOW) formation of parent compound Fe$_{1+y}$Te [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 187202 (2014)] reveals an acoustic-phonon-like dispersion present in all structural phases. While a structural Bragg peak accompanies the mode in the low-temperature phase of Fe$_{1+y}$Te, it is absent in the high-temperature tetragonal phase, where Bragg scattering at this $\mathbf{Q}$ is forbidden by symmetry. Notably, this mode is also observed in superconducting FeTe$_{0.55}$Se$_{0.45}$, where structural and magnetic transitions are suppressed, and no BOW has been observed. The presence of this "forbidden" phonon indicates that the lattice symmetry is dynamically or locally broken by magneto-orbital BOW fluctuations, which are strongly coupled to lattice in these materials.

MCViNE -- An object oriented Monte Carlo neutron ray tracing simulation package

MCViNE (Monte-Carlo VIrtual Neutron Experiment) is a versatile Monte Carlo (MC) neutron ray-tracing program that provides researchers with tools for performing computer modeling and simulations that mirror real neutron scattering experiments. By adopting modern software engineering practices such as using composite and visitor design patterns for representing and accessing neutron scatterers, and using recursive algorithms for multiple scattering, MCViNE is flexible enough to handle sophisticated neutron scattering problems including, for example, neutron detection by complex detector systems, and single and multiple scattering events in a variety of samples and sample environments. In addition, MCViNE can take advantage of simulation components in linear-chain-based MC ray tracing packages widely used in instrument design and optimization, as well as NumPy-based components that make prototypes useful and easy to develop. These developments have enabled us to carry out detailed simulations of neutron scattering experiments with non-trivial samples in time-of-flight inelastic instruments at the Spallation Neutron Source. Examples of such simulations for powder and single-crystal samples with various scattering kernels, including kernels for phonon and magnon scattering, are presented. With simulations that closely reproduce experimental results, scattering mechanisms can be turned on and off to determine how they contribute to the measured scattering intensities, improving our understanding of the underlying physics.

Ferro-orbital ordering transition in iron telluride Fe$_{1+y}$Te

Fe$_{1+y}$Te with $y \lesssim 0.05$ exhibits a first-order phase transition on cooling to a state with a lowered structural symmetry, bicollinear antiferromagnetic order, and metallic conductivity, $dρ/dT > 0$. Here, we study samples with $y = 0.09(1)$, where the frustration effects of the interstitial Fe decouple different orders, leading to a sequence of transitions. While the lattice distortion is closely followed by \emph{incommensurate} magnetic order, the development of \emph{bicollinear} order and metallic electronic coherence is uniquely associated with a separate hysteretic first-order transition, at a markedly lower temperature, to a phase with dramatically enhanced bond-order wave (BOW) order. The BOW state suggests ferro-orbital ordering, where electronic delocalization in ferromagnetic zigzag chains decreases local spin and results in metallic transport.

Doping influence of spin dynamics and magnetoelectric effect in hexagonal Y$_{0.7}$Lu$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study spin waves and their correlation with the magnetoelectric effect in Y$_{0.7}$Lu$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$. In the undoped YMnO$_3$ and LuMnO$_3$, the Mn trimerization distortion has been suggested to play a key role in determining the magnetic structure and the magnetoelectric effect. In Y$_{0.7}$Lu$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$, we find a much smaller in-plane (hexagonal $ab$-plane) single ion anisotropy gap that coincides with a weaker in-plane dielectric anomaly at $T_N$. Since both the smaller in-plane anisotropy gap and the weaker in-plane dielectric anomaly are coupled to a weaker Mn trimerization distortion in Y$_{0.7}$Lu$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ comparing to YMnO$_3$ and LuMnO$_3$, we conclude that the Mn trimerization is responsible for the magnetoelectric effect and multiferroic phenomenon in Y$_{1-y}$Lu$_{y}$MnO$_{3}$.
