Automatic adjustment of undulator optics for FELs

In this paper, we describe a way to automatically adjust the quadrupole focusing along the undulator to avoid the instabilities, taking into account energy change and undulator focusing. The procedure is more generalized and applicable to any strongly focusing (planar) undulator.

Flexible multi-bunch-length operation for continuous-wave x-ray free-electron lasers

The X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) are cutting-edge instruments pivotal in a broad range of fields, providing high-power X-ray pulses with durations spanning from femtoseconds to attoseconds. One of the critical challenges in XFEL facilities is the simultaneous accommodation of diverse requirements for XFEL operation modes and photon properties across different undulator lines. This paper proposes a dipole-kicker combination in the bunch compressors to vary the electron bunch length for the continuous-wave XFEL facilities driven by a superconducting linac. This method enables optimization of the electron bunch length on a per-bunch basis, tailored to each specific needs of each undulator. Through start-to-end simulations based on the parameters of the Shanghai high-repetition-rate XFEL and extreme light facility, we demonstrate the feasibility of this technique. The results show its effectiveness in enabling simultaneous operations of self-amplified spontaneous emission and externally seeded FEL across different undulator lines, ensuring optimal electron bunch compression for each undulator line.

RF regulation with superconducting cavities and beam operation using a frequency shifted cavity

The free-electron laser FLASH at DESY and the European XFEL are operated with superconducting radio frequency cavities and supply beam to several user experiments. The switching time between experiments is limited to dozens of microseconds. This contribution will show a regulation with a frequency shifted superconducting cavity to manipulate and change the accelerating properties of electron bunches with 250 kHz.The main challenge of the concept presented in this contribution can be summarized in this statement: finding a way to modulate the energy of individual bunches in a single-source multiple-cavity scheme for a potential CW upgrade of the EuXFEL.

High-repetition-rate seeded free-electron laser with direct-amplification of an external coherent laser

Various scientific and industrial researches such as spectroscopy and advanced nano-technologies have been demanding high flux and fully coherent EUV and X-ray radiation. These demands can be commendably satisfied with a MHz-level repetition-rate seeded free-electron laser (FEL). Dictated by the seed laser system, seeded FELs have faced obstacles for the realization of MHz repetition rate. Reducing the required peak power of an external coherent seed laser can effectively increase the repetition rate of a seeded FEL. This paper presents a novel technique that employs a long modulator as a carrier for laser amplification and electron modulation, which is quite different from nominal seeded FELs. Applications of the proposed technique into high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG) and echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) are investigated. Simulation results demonstrate that seed laser power is reduced by about three orders of magnitude and the FEL radiation possesses consistently high coherence and power stability with respect to the nominal HGHG or EEHG. The proposed technique paves the way for the realization of fully coherent EUV and soft X-ray FELs with a repetition rate of MHz and an average power of about 100 W.

Empirical Optimization of Undulator Tapering at FLASH2 and Comparison with Numerical Simulations

In a free-electron laser equipped with variable-gap undulator modules, the technique of undulator tapering opens up the possibility to increase the radiation power beyond the initial saturation point, thus enhancing the efficiency of the laser. The effectiveness of the enhancement relies on the proper optimization of the taper profile. In this work, a multidimensional optimization approach is implemented empirically in the x-ray free-electron laser FLASH2. The empirical results are compared with numerical simulations.

The echo-enabled harmonic generation options for FLASH II

FLASH II is an upgrade to the existing free electron laser (FEL) FLASH. The echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) scheme is proposed to be a potential seeding option of FLASH II. In this paper, the possibility of EEHG operation of FLASH II is investigated for the first time. With a combination of existing numerical codes, i.e. a laser-beam interaction code in an undulator (LBICU), a beam tracking code in a chicane (ELEGANT) and an universal FEL simulating code (GENESIS), the effects of beam energy chirp and coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) on EEHG operation are studied as well. In addition, several interesting issues concerning EEHG simulation are discussed.
