Effective field theory of a single scalar pion field for large scale structure in the Universe

We discuss the effective field theory of large scale structure in terms of a single scalar degree of freedom, corresponding to the velocity potential of the matter fluid in a $\Lambda$CDM universe. This cosmic ``pion'' field is nonlinearly related to the overdensity and the gravitational potential, and corresponds to the Goldstone boson of spontaneously broken spacetime symmetry, allowing us to organize perturbation theory in a systematic way while keeping the symmetries manifest. We develop the effective field theory of the pion field to next-to-leading order, and we use it to calculate the corrections to the power spectrum and to check that these are consistent with the consistency relations of spontaneously broken spacetime symmetry. We compare our results against computer simulations for the evolution of large scale structure in the pion field picture, and we make use of N-body simulations to measure EFT coefficients and analyze the growth of additional degrees of freedom in the deep nonlinear regime. We conclude with a discussion of how the pion field picture may help suggest new variables for analyzing simulations and experimental surveys of large scale structure.

Asymptotic symmetries in Bondi gauge and the sub-subleading soft graviton theorem

We investigate asymptotic symmetries which preserve the Bondi gauge conditions but do not preserve the asymptotic falloff conditions for the metric near the null boundary, and their connection to soft graviton theorems for scattering amplitudes. These include generalized superrotation symmetries parameterized by a smooth vector field $Y^{A}$ obeying $D_{A}Y^{A} = 0$, for which we show that the associated conserved charge can be derived by applying the Noether procedure to the Einstein-Katz action. We also discuss the connection between asymptotic symmetries and the conserved charge associated with the sub-subleading soft theorem, and we find that in Bondi gauge this charge is generated by the combination of a diffeomorphism together with an extra transformation of the metric.

The Higgs field and early universe cosmology: a (brief) review

We review and discuss recent work exploring the implications of the Higgs field for early universe cosmology, and vice versa. Depending on the model under consideration the Higgs may be one of a few scalar fields determining the evolution and fate of the Universe, or the Higgs field may be connected to a rich sector of scalar moduli with complicated dynamics. In particular we look at the potential consequences of the Higgs field for inflation and its predictions, for the (meta)stability of the Standard Model vacuum, and for the existence of dynamical selection mechanisms in the landscape.

Observable relics of the simple harmonic universe

We analyze observational signatures arising from an epoch in cosmology corresponding to the simple harmonic universe, which consists of positive curvature, a negative cosmological constant, and one or more exotic matter sources with $-1 < w = p/ρ\leq -1/3$, which may then evolve or tunnel into an inflating and hot Big Bang phase. Particular relics specific to this class of models include spatial curvature with $Ω_k < 0$, modifications to the dark energy sector due to the presence of residual exotic matter, and the possibility that the cosmological constant may ultimately be negative. We review the constraints on the relevant parameters from Planck and other cosmological data sets, focusing on the roles of exotic matter and curvature, and we find that while sources with $w \approx -1$ tend to tighten the constraints on $Ω_k$, matter with $w = -1/3$ can decouple curvature from the expansion history. For the case where the dark energy sector includes a negative cosmological constant, we use the experimental data to find an associated lower bound on the lifetime of the expansion of the Universe.

Double-soft graviton amplitudes and the extended BMS charge algebra

We discuss how scattering amplitudes in 4d Minkowski spacetime which involve multiple soft gravitons realize the algebra of BMS charges on the null boundary. In particular, we show how the commutator of two such charges is realized by the antisymmetrized consecutive soft limit of the double soft amplitude. The commutator is found to be robust even in the presence of quantum corrections, and the associated Lie algebra has an extension, which breaks the BMS symmetry if the BMS algebra is taken to include the Virasoro algebra of local superrotations. We discuss the implications of this structure for the existence of a 2d CFT dual description for 4d scattering amplitudes.

Positive curvature and scalar field tunneling in the landscape

We present a model of vacuum tunneling through a classically forbidden region where a scalar field changes its value simultaneously over the entire volume of a (meta)stable ancestor vacuum with spherical curvature. The tunneling leaves the geometry unchanged but rearranges the energetic contributions of the matter sources, leading to an inflating solution with residual positive curvature. We show that there exists a parametric regime where this solution is self-consistent and dominates the overall tunneling rate. We conclude that an experimental detection of positive curvature, while not necessarily likely, therefore does not rule out the possibility that our present observer patch originated from semiclassical vacuum tunneling in a string or field theoretic landscape.

Perturbations of vortex ring pairs

We study pairs of co-axial vortex rings starting from the action for a classical bosonic string in a three-form background. We complete earlier work on the phase diagram of classical orbits by explicitly considering the case where the circulations of the two vortex rings are equal and opposite. We then go on to study perturbations, focusing on cases where the relevant four-dimensional transfer matrix splits into two-dimensional blocks. When the circulations of the rings have the same sign, instabilities are mostly limited to wavelengths smaller than a dynamically generated length scale at which single-ring instabilities occur. When the circulations have the opposite sign, larger wavelength instabilities can occur.

Effective string theory for vortex lines in fluids and superfluids

We discuss the effective string theory of vortex lines in ordinary fluids and low-temperature superfluids, by describing the bulk fluid flow in terms of a two-form field to which vortex lines can couple. We derive the most general low-energy effective Lagrangian that is compatible with (spontaneously broken) Poincare invariance and worldsheet reparameterization invariance. This generalizes the effective action developed by Lund and Regge and by Endlich and Nicolis. By applying standard field-theoretical techniques, we show that certain low-energy coupling constants -- most notably the string tension -- exhibit RG running already at the classical level. We discuss applications of our techniques to the study of Kelvin waves, vortex rings, and the coupling to bulk sound modes.

Lagrangian space consistency relation for large scale structure

Consistency relations, which relate the squeezed limit of an (N+1)-point correlation function to an N-point function, are non-perturbative symmetry statements that hold even if the associated high momentum modes are deep in the nonlinear regime and astrophysically complex. Recently, Kehagias & Riotto and Peloso & Pietroni discovered a consistency relation applicable to large scale structure. We show that this can be recast into a simple physical statement in Lagrangian space: that the squeezed correlation function (suitably normalized) vanishes. This holds regardless of whether the correlation observables are at the same time or not, and regardless of whether multiple-streaming is present. The simplicity of this statement suggests that an analytic understanding of large scale structure in the nonlinear regime may be particularly promising in Lagrangian space.

Soft-Pion Theorems for Large Scale Structure

Consistency relations -- which relate an N-point function to a squeezed (N+1)-point function -- are useful in large scale structure (LSS) because of their non-perturbative nature: they hold even if the N-point function is deep in the nonlinear regime, and even if they involve astrophysically messy galaxy observables. The non-perturbative nature of the consistency relations is guaranteed by the fact that they are symmetry statements, in which the velocity plays the role of the soft pion. In this paper, we address two issues: (1) how to derive the relations systematically using the residual coordinate freedom in the Newtonian gauge, and relate them to known results in $ζ$-gauge (often used in studies of inflation); (2) under what conditions the consistency relations are violated. In the non-relativistic limit, our derivation reproduces the Newtonian consistency relation discovered by Kehagias \& Riotto and Peloso & Pietroni. More generally, there is an infinite set of consistency relations, as is known in $ζ$-gauge. There is a one-to-one correspondence between symmetries in the two gauges; in particular, the Newtonian consistency relation follows from the dilation and special conformal symmetries in $ζ$-gauge. We probe the robustness of the consistency relations by studying models of galaxy dynamics and biasing. We give a systematic list of conditions under which the consistency relations are violated; violations occur if the galaxy bias is non-local in an infrared divergent way. We emphasize the relevance of the adiabatic mode condition, as distinct from symmetry considerations. As a by-product of our investigation, we discuss a simple fluid Lagrangian for LSS.

Exploring eternal stability with the simple harmonic universe

We construct nonsingular cyclic cosmologies that respect the null energy condition, have a large hierarchy between the minimum and maximum size of the universe, and are stable under linearized fluctuations. The models are supported by a combination of positive curvature, a negative cosmological constant, cosmic strings and matter that at the homogeneous level behaves as a perfect fluid with equation of state -1 < w < -1/3. We investigate analytically the stability of the perturbation equations and discuss the role of parametric resonances and nonlinear corrections. Finally, we argue that Casimir energy contributions associated to the compact spatial slices can become important at short scales and lift nonperturbative decays towards vanishing size. This class of models (particularly in the static limit) can then provide a useful framework for studying the question of the ultimate (meta)stability of an eternal universe.

A Simple Harmonic Universe

We explore simple but novel bouncing solutions of general relativity that avoid singularities. These solutions require curvature k=+1, and are supported by a negative cosmological term and matter with -1 < w < -1/3. In the case of moderate bounces (where the ratio of the maximal scale factor $a_+$ to the minimal scale factor $a_-$ is ${\cal O}(1)$), the solutions are shown to be classically stable and cycle through an infinite set of bounces. For more extreme cases with large $a_+/a_-$, the solutions can still oscillate many times before classical instabilities take them out of the regime of validity of our approximations. In this regime, quantum particle production also leads eventually to a departure from the realm of validity of semiclassical general relativity, likely yielding a singular crunch. We briefly discuss possible applications of these models to realistic cosmology.

Moduli Stabilization and the Holographic RG for AdS and dS

We relate moduli stabilization ($V'=0$) in the bulk of $AdS_D$ or $dS_D$ to basic properties of the Wilsonian effective action in the holographic dual theory on $dS_{D-1}$: the single-trace terms in the action have vanishing beta functions, and higher-trace couplings are determined purely from lower-trace ones. In the de Sitter case, this encodes the maximal symmetry of the bulk spacetime in a quantity which is accessible within an observer patch. Along the way, we clarify the role of counterterms, constraints, and operator redundancy in the Wilsonian holographic RG prescription, reproducing the expected behavior of the trace of the stress-energy tensor in the dual for both $AdS_D$ and $dS_D$. We further show that metastability of the gravity-side potential energy corresponds to a nonperturbatively small imaginary contribution to the Wilsonian action of pure de Sitter, a result consistent with the need for additional degrees of freedom in the holographic description of its ultimate decay.

The squeezed limit of the solid inflation three-point function

The recently proposed model of 'solid inflation' features a peculiar three-point function for scalar perturbations with an anisotropic, purely quadrupolar, squeezed limit. We confirm this result as well as the overall amplitude of the three point-function via an extremely simple computation, where we focus on the squeezed limit from the start and follow the standard logic adopted in deriving the consistency relations. Our system violates the consistency relations, but in the squeezed limit the three-point function can still be traded for a background-dependent two-point function, which is immediate to compute. Additionally, we use these simple methods to derive some new results - namely, certain squeezed limits of the three-point correlators involving vector and tensor perturbations as well.

Perturbative Critical Behavior from Spacetime Dependent Couplings

We find novel perturbative fixed points by introducing mildly spacetime-dependent couplings into otherwise marginal terms. In four-dimensional QFT, these are physical analogues of the small-$ε$ Wilson-Fisher fixed point. Rather than considering $4-ε$ dimensions, we stay in four dimensions but introduce couplings whose leading spacetime dependence is of the form $λx^κμ^κ$, with a small parameter $κ$ playing a role analogous to $ε$. We show, in $ϕ^4$ theory and in QED and QCD with massless flavors, that this leads to a critical theory under perturbative control over an exponentially wide window of spacetime positions $x$. The exact fixed point coupling $λ_*(x)$ in our theory is identical to the running coupling of the translationally invariant theory, with the scale replaced by $1/x$. Similar statements hold for three-dimensional $ϕ^6$ theories and two-dimensional sigma models with curved target spaces. We also describe strongly coupled examples using conformal perturbation theory.

Unitarity bounds and RG flows in time dependent quantum field theory

We generalize unitarity bounds on operator dimensions in conformal field theory to field theories with spacetime dependent couplings. Below the energy scale of spacetime variation of the couplings, their evolution can strongly affect the physics, effectively shifting the infrared operator scaling and unitarity bounds determined from correlation functions in the theory. We analyze this explicitly for large-$N$ double-trace flows, and connect these to UV complete field theories. One motivating class of examples comes from our previous work on FRW holography, where this effect explains the range of flavors allowed in the dual, time dependent, field theory.

FRW solutions and holography from uplifted AdS/CFT

Starting from concrete AdS/CFT dual pairs, one can introduce ingredients which produce cosmological solutions, including metastable de Sitter and its decay to non-accelerating FRW. We present simple FRW solutions sourced by magnetic flavor branes and analyze correlation functions and particle and brane dynamics. To obtain a holographic description, we exhibit a time-dependent warped metric on the solution and interpret the resulting redshifted region as a Lorentzian low energy effective field theory in one fewer dimension. At finite times, this theory has a finite cutoff, a propagating lower dimensional graviton and a finite covariant entropy bound, but at late times the lower dimensional Planck mass and entropy go off to infinity in a way that is dominated by contributions from the low energy effective theory. This opens up the possibility of a precise dual at late times. We reproduce the time-dependent growth of the number of degrees of freedom in the system via a count of available microscopic states in the corresponding magnetic brane construction.

Simple exercises to flatten your potential

We show how backreaction of the inflaton potential energy on heavy scalar fields can flatten the inflationary potential, as the heavy fields adjust to their most energetically favorable configuration. This mechanism operates in previous UV-complete examples of axion monodromy inflation - flattening a would-be quadratic potential to one linear in the inflaton field - but occurs more generally, and we illustrate the effect with several examples. Special choices of compactification minimizing backreaction may realize chaotic inflation with a quadratic potential, but we argue that a flatter potential such as power-law inflation $V(ϕ) \propto ϕ^p$ with $p<2$ is a more generic option at sufficiently large values of $ϕ$.
