Fractional and non-fractional Hardy inequality on a lattice $\Z^d$

We present simple proofs of a discrete fractional and non-fractional Hardy inequality, Our constants are explicit, but not optimal. In the class of power weights, we get a complete picture of when the non-fractional Hardy inequality holds, for any dimension $d$ of the lattice $\Z^d$ and exponent $0<p<\infty$.

Critical fractional Hardy inequalities

We give a roadmap for the study of critical fractional Hardy inequalities for Dirichlet and Sobolev--Bregman forms. We focus on homogeneous forms on the real line, in particular the form of the fractional Laplacian and the Servadei--Valdinoci form. We prove criticality results in both the Dirichlet and Sobolev--Bregman settings.

The Dirichlet Problem For the Logarithmic p-Laplacian

We introduce and study the logarithmic $p$-Laplacian $L_{Δ_p}$, which emerges from the formal derivative of the fractional $p$-Laplacian $(-Δ_p)^s$ at $s=0$. This operator is nonlocal, has logarithmic order, and is the nonlinear version of the newly developed logarithmic Laplacian operator. We present a variational framework to study the Dirichlet problems involving the $L_{Δ_p}$ in bounded domains. This allows us to investigate the connection between the first Dirichlet eigenvalue and eigenfunction of the fractional $p$-Laplacian and the logarithmic $p$-Laplacian. As a consequence, we deduce a Faber-Krahn inequality for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of $L_{Δ_p}$. We discuss maximum and comparison principles for $L_{Δ_p}$ in bounded domains and demonstrate that the validity of these depends on the sign of the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of $L_{Δ_p}$. In addition, we prove that the first Dirichlet eigenfunction of $L_{Δ_p}$ is bounded. Furthermore, we establish a boundary Hardy-type inequality for the spaces associated with the weak formulation of the logarithmic $p$-Laplacian.

Sharp weighted fractional Hardy inequalities

We investigate the weighted fractional order Hardy inequality $$ \int_Ω\int_Ω\frac{|f(x)-f(y)|^{p}}{|x-y|^{d+sp}}\text{dist}(x,\partialΩ)^{-α}\text{dist}(y,\partialΩ)^{-β}\,dy\,dx\geq C\int_Ω\frac{|f(x)|^{p}}{\text{dist}(x,\partialΩ)^{sp+α+β}}\,dx, $$ for $Ω=\mathbb{R}^{d-1}\times(0,\infty)$, $Ω$ being a convex domain or $Ω=\mathbb{R}^d\setminus\{0\}$. Our work focuses on finding the best (i.e. sharp) constant $C=C(d,s,p,α,β)$ in all cases. We also obtain weighted version of the fractional Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya inequality. The proofs are based on general Hardy inequalities and the non-linear ground state representation, established by Frank and Seiringer.

On density of compactly supported smooth functions in fractional Sobolev spaces

We describe some sufficient conditions, under which smooth and compactly supported functions are or are not dense in the fractional Sobolev space $W^{s,p}(Ω)$ for an open, bounded set $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{d}$. The density property is closely related to the lower and upper Assouad codimension of the boundary of $Ω$. We also describe explicitly the closure of $C_{c}^{\infty}(Ω)$ in $W^{s,p}(Ω)$ under some mild assumptions about the geometry of $Ω$. Finally, we prove a variant of a fractional order Hardy inequality.

A framework for fractional Hardy inequalities

We provide a general framework for fractional Hardy inequalities. Our framework covers, for instance, fractional inequalities related to the Dirichlet forms of some Lévy processes, and weighted fractional inequalities on irregular open sets.

Fractional Poincaré and localized Hardy inequalities on metric spaces

We prove fractional Sobolev-Poincaré inequalities, capacitary versions of fractional Poincaré inequalities, and pointwise and localized fractional Hardy inequalities in a metric space equipped with a doubling measure. Our results generalize and extend earlier work where such inequalities have been considered in the Euclidean spaces or in the non-fractional setting in metric spaces. The results concerning pointwise and localized variants of fractional Hardy inequalities are new even in the Euclidean case.

On density of smooth functions in weighted fractional Sobolev spaces

We prove that smooth $C^\infty$ functions are dense in weighted fractional Sobolev spaces on an arbitrary open set, under some mild conditions on the weight. We also obtain a~similar result in non-weighted spaces defined by some kernel similar to $x\mapsto |x|^{-d-sp}$. One may consider the results to be a~version of the Meyers--Serrin theorem.

Fractional Hardy-Sobolev type inequalities for half spaces and John domains

As our main result we prove a variant of the fractional Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya inequality for half spaces. This result contains a complete answer to a recent open question by Musina and Nazarov. In the proof we apply a new version of the fractional Hardy-Sobolev inequality that we establish also for more general unbounded John domains than half spaces.

Muckenhoupt $A_p$-properties of distance functions and applications to Hardy-Sobolev -type inequalities

Let $X$ be a metric space equipped with a doubling measure. We consider weights $w(x)=\operatorname{dist}(x,E)^{-α}$, where $E$ is a closed set in $X$ and $α\in\mathbb R$. We establish sharp conditions, based on the Assouad (co)dimension of $E$, for the inclusion of $w$ in Muckenhoupt's $A_p$ classes of weights, $1\le p<\infty$. With the help of general $A_p$-weighted embedding results, we then prove (global) Hardy-Sobolev inequalities and also fractional versions of such inequalities in the setting of metric spaces.

Eigenvalues of the fractional Laplace operator in the unit ball

We describe a highly efficient numerical scheme for finding two-sided bounds for the eigenvalues of the fractional Laplace operator (-Delta)^{alpha/2} in the unit ball D in R^d, with a Dirichlet condition in the complement of D. The standard Rayleigh-Ritz variational method is used for the upper bounds, while the lower bounds involve the less-known Aronszajn method of intermediate problems. Both require explicit expressions for the fractional Laplace operator applied to a linearly dense set of functions in L^2(D). We use appropriate Jacobi-type orthogonal polynomials, which were studied in a companion paper "Fractional Laplace operator and Meijer G-function". Our numerical scheme can be applied analytically when polynomials of degree two are involved. This is used to partially resolve the conjecture of T. Kulczycki, which claims that the second smallest eigenvalue corresponds to an antisymmetric function: we prove that this is the case when either d <= 2 and 0 < alpha <= 2, or d <= 9 and alpha = 1, and we provide strong numerical evidence for d <= 9 and general alpha in (0,2].

Fractional Laplace operator and Meijer G-function

We significantly expand the number of functions whose image under the fractional Laplace operator can be computed explicitly. In particular, we show that the fractional Laplace operator maps Meijer G-functions of |x|^2, or generalized hypergeometric functions of -|x|^2, multiplied by a solid harmonic polynomial, into the same class of functions. As one important application of this result, we produce a complete system of eigenfunctions of the operator (1-|x|^2)_+^{alpha/2} (-Delta)^{alpha/2} with the Dirichlet boundary conditions outside of the unit ball. The latter result will be used to estimate the eigenvalues of the fractional Laplace operator in the unit ball in a companion paper "Eigenvalues of the fractional Laplace operator in the unit ball".

On improved fractional Sobolev-Poincaré inequalities

We prove a certain improved fractional Sobolev-Poincaré inequality on John domains; the proof is based on the equivalence of the corresponding weak and strong type inequalities. We also give necessary conditions for the validity of an improved fractional Sobolev-Poincaré inequality, in particular, we show that a domain having a finite measure and satisfying this inequality, and a `separation property', is a John domain.

Characterizations for fractional Hardy inequality

We provide a Maz'ya type characterization for a fractional Hardy inequality. As an application, we show that a bounded open set $G$ admits a fractional Hardy inequality if and only if the associated fractional capacity is quasiadditive with respect to Whitney cubes of $G$ and the zero extension operator acting on $C_c(G)$ is bounded in an appropriate manner.

On weighted Poincaré inequalities

The aim of this note is to show that Poincaré inequalities imply corresponding weighted versions in a quite general setting. Fractional Poincaré inequalities are considered, too. The proof is short and does not involve covering arguments.
