Photocurrent in conjugated polymers

Nonlinear photocurrent carriers in conjugated polymers, such as polarons, bipolarons and solitons, are considered at low photon energies where a tunnelling process is necessary. We show that polarons usually dominate the photocurrent I due to a novel electric field assisted tunnelling for which ln(I) ~ -E^{-2/3}. For near degenerate polymers an electric field E which exceeds the confinement potential and frequencies above twice the soliton energy, soliton tunnelling is favored. Photocurrent data can then be used to identify the remarkable phenomenon of soliton conduction.

Spontaneous magnetization and Hall effect in superconductors with broken time-reversal symmetry

Broken time reversal symmetry (BTRS) in d wave superconductors is studied and is shown to yield current carrying surface states. The corresponding spontaneous magnetization is temperature independent near the critical temperature Tc for weak BTRS, in accord with recent data. For strong BTRS and thin films we expect a temperature dependent spontaneous magnetization with a paramagnetic anomaly near Tc. The Hall conductance is found to vanish at zero wavevector q and finite frequency w, however at finite q,w it has an unusual structure.

Freezing transitions and the density of states of 2D random Dirac Hamiltonians

Using an exact mapping to disordered Coulomb gases, we introduce a novel method to study two dimensional Dirac fermions with quenched disorder in two dimensions which allows to treat non perturbative freezing phenomena. For purely random gauge disorder it is known that the exact zero energy eigenstate exhibits a freezing-like transition at a threshold value of disorder $σ=σ_{th}=2$. Here we compute the dynamical exponent $z$ which characterizes the critical behaviour of the density of states around zero energy, and find that it also exhibits a phase transition. Specifically, we find that $ρ(E=0 + i ε) \sim ε^{2/z-1}$ (and $ρ(E) \sim E^{2/z-1}$) with $z=1 + σ$ for $σ< 2$ and $z=\sqrt{8 σ} - 1$ for $σ> 2$. For a finite system size $L<ε^{-1/z}$ we find large sample to sample fluctuations with a typical $ρ_ε(0) \sim L^{z-2}$. Adding a scalar random potential of small variance $δ$, as in the corresponding quantum Hall system, yields a finite noncritical $ρ(0) \sim δ^α$ whose scaling exponent $α$ exhibits two transitions, one at $σ_{th}/4$ and the other at $σ_{th}$. These transitions are shown to be related to the one of a directed polymer on a Cayley tree with random signs (or complex) Boltzmann weights. Some observations are made for the strong disorder regime relevant to describe transport in the quantum Hall system.

Disorder Induced Transitions in Layered Coulomb Gases and Superconductors

A 3D layered system of charges with logarithmic interaction parallel to the layers and random dipoles is studied via a novel variational method and an energy rationale which reproduce the known phase diagram for a single layer. Increasing interlayer coupling leads to successive transitions in which charge rods correlated in N>1 neighboring layers are nucleated by weaker disorder. For layered superconductors in the limit of only magnetic interlayer coupling, the method predicts and locates a disorder-induced defect-unbinding transition in the flux lattice. While N=1 charges dominate there, N>1 disorder induced defect rods are predicted for multi-layer superconductors.

Second magnetization peak in flux lattices: the decoupling scenario

The second peak phenomena of flux lattices in layered superconductors is described in terms of a disorder induced layer decoupling transition. For weak disorder the tilt mudulus undergoes an apparent discontinuity which leads to an enhanced critical current and reduced domain size in the decoupled phase. The Josephson plasma frequency is reduced by decoupling and by Josephson glass pinning; in the liquid phase it varies as 1/[BT(T+T_0)] where T is temperature, B is field and T_0 is the disorder dependent temperature of the multicritical point.

Quantum Hall Transitions in Field Induced Spin Density Wave Systems

Field Induced Spin Density Wave (FISDW) systems exhibit coexistence phases between well defined quantum Hall plateau phases with even integers 2N and 2N'. We show that a disordered coexistence region accounts for the observed peaks in the longitudinal resistivity as the field varies between plateaux. It also results in a random spin mixing which yields two energy split extended states. The longitudinal resistance is expected to show peaks witha temperature (T) dependent width proportional to the kappa's power of T. The peak width should saturate below the non-nesting interlayer coupling of order 40 mK

Anharmonicity of flux lattices and thermal fluctuations in layered superconductors

We study elasticity of a perpendicular flux lattice in a layered superconductor with Josephson coupling between layers. We find that the energy contains ln(flux displacement) terms, so that elastic constants cannot be strictly defined. Instead we define effective elastic constants by a thermal average. The tilt modulus has terms with ln(T) which for weak fields, i.e. Josephson length smaller than the flux line spacing, lead to displacement square average proportional to T/ln(T). The expansion parameter indicates that the dominant low temperature phase transition is either layer decoupling at high fields or melting at low fields.

Disorder in two dimensional Josephson junctions

An effective free energy of a two dimensional (i.e. large area) Josephson Junctions is derived, allowing for thermal fluctuations, for random magnetic fields and for external currents. We show by using replica symmetry breaking methods, that the junction has four distinct phases: disordered, Josephson ordered, a glass phase and a coexisting Josephson order with the glass phase. Near the coexistence to glass transition at s=1/2 the critical current is ~ (area)^{-s+1/2} where s is a measure of disorder. Our results may account for junction ordering at temperatures well below the critical temperature of the bulk in high T_c trilayer junctions.

Josephson glass and decoupling of flux lattices in layered superconductors

Phase transitions of a flux lattice in layered superconductors with magnetic field perpendicular to the layers and in presence of disorder are studied. We find that the Josephson coupling between layers leads to a strongly pinned Josephson glass (JG) phase at low temperatures and fields. The JG phase undergoes either a decoupling transition with increasing field or a depinning transition with increasing temperature. The resulting phases undergo further depinning and decoupling transitions, respectively, resulting in a phase diagram with a multicritical point where four phases meet. The phase diagram accounts for unusual data on Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 such as the "second peak" transition and the recently observed depinning transitions.

Glass phases of flux lattices in layered superconductors

We study a flux lattice which is parallel to superconducting layers, allowing for dislocations and for disorder of both short wavelength and long wavelength. We find that the long wavelength disorder has a significant effect on the phase diagram -- it produces a first order transition within the Bragg glass phase and leads to melting at strong disorder. This then allows a Friedel scenario of 2D superconductivity.
