On equilibrium equations and their perturbations using three different variational formulations of nonlinear electroelastostatics

We derive the equations of nonlinear electroelastostatics using three different variational formulations involving the deformation function and an independent field variable representing the electric character - considering either one of the electric field $\mathbb{E}$, electric displacement $\mathbb{D}$, or electric polarization $\mathbb{P}$. The first variation of the energy functional results in the set of Euler-Lagrange partial differential equations which are the equilibrium equations, boundary conditions, { and certain constitutive equations} for the electroelastic system. The partial differential equations for obtaining the bifurcation point have been also found using the second variation based bilinear functional. We show that the well-known Maxwell stress in vacuum is a natural outcome of the derivation of equations from the variational principles and does not depend on the formulation used. As a result of careful analysis it is found that there are certain terms in the bifurcation equation which appear difficult to obtain by an ordinary perturbation based analysis of the Euler-Lagrange equation. From a practical viewpoint, the formulations based on $\mathbb{E}$ and $\mathbb{D}$ result in simpler equations and are anticipated to be more suitable for analysing problems of stability as well as post-buckling behaviour.

Scattering on square lattice from crack with damage zone

A semi-infinite crack in infinite square lattice is subjected to a wave coming from infinity, thereby leading to its scattering by the crack surfaces. A partially damaged zone ahead of the crack-tip is modeled by an arbitrarily distributed stiffness of the damaged links. While the open crack, with an atomically sharp crack-tip, in the lattice has been solved in closed form with help of {the} scalar Wiener-Hopf formulation (SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 75, 1171--1192; 1915--1940), the problem considered here becomes very intricate depending on the nature of damaged links. For instance, in the case of partially bridged finite zone it involves a $2\times2$ matrix kernel of formidable class. But using an original technique, the problem, including the general case of arbitrarily damaged links, is reduced to a scalar one with the exception that it involves solving an auxiliary linear system of $N \times N$ equations where $N$ defines the length of the damage zone. The proposed method does allow, effectively, the construction of an exact solution. Numerical examples and the asymptotic approximation of the scattered field far away from the crack-tip are also presented.

Wave scattering on lattice structures involving array of cracks

Scattering of waves due to a vertical array of equally-spaced cracks on a square lattice is studied. The convenience of Floquet periodicity reduces the study to that of scattering of specific wave-mode from single crack in a waveguide. The discrete Green's function, for the waveguide, is used to obtain semi-analytical solution for scattering problem in case of finite cracks whereas the limiting case of semi-infinite cracks is tackled by an application of Wiener--Hopf technique. Reflectance and transmittance of such an array of cracks, in terms of incident wave parameters, is analyzed. Potential applications include construction of tunable atomic scale interfaces to control energy transmission at different frequencies.

Wiener-Hopf factorisation on unit circle: some examples from discrete scattering

I discuss some problems featuring scattering due to discrete edges on certain structures. These problems stem from linear difference equations and the underlying basic issue can be mapped to Wiener-Hopf factorization on an annulus in the complex plane. In most of these problems, the relevant factorization involves a scalar function, while in some cases a nxn matrix kernel, with n>=2, appears. For the latter, I give examples of two non-trivial cases where it can be further reduced to a scalar problem but in general this is not the case. Some of the problems that I have presented in this paper can be also interpreted as discrete analogues of well-known scattering problems, notably a few of which are still open, in Wiener-Hopf factorization on an infinite strip in complex plane.

A Family of Solitary Waves in Frenkel-Kontorova Lattice

A family of solitary waves is constructed in Frenkel-Kontorova model and its continuum and quasi-continuum approximations. Each solitary waves is characterised by the number of local maxima in its profile and a relation between external force and the velocity of wave. Such waves may be interpreted as a coherent motion, with constant velocity, of two dislocations of opposite sign or of kink-antikink pair.

Transmission of waves across atomic step discontinuities in discrete nanoribbon structures

Scalar wave propagation across a semi-infinite step or step-like discontinuity on any one boundary of the square lattice waveguides is considered within nearest-neighbour interaction approximation. An application of the Wiener-Hopf method does yield an exact solution of the discrete scattering problem, using which, as the main result of the paper, the transmission coefficients for energy flux are obtained. It is assumed that a wave mode is incident from either side of the step and the question addressed is what fraction of incident energy is transmitted across the atomic step discontinuity. A total of ten configurations are presented that arise due to various placements of discrete Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions on the waveguide. Numerical illustrations of a measure of conductance are provided.

Wave transmission across surface interfaces in lattice structures

Within the lattice dynamics formulation, we present an exact solution for anti-plane surface waves in a square lattice strip with a surface row of material particles of two types separated by a linear interface. The considered problem is a discrete analog of an elastic half-space with surface stresses modelled through the simplified Gurtin-Murdoch model, where we have an interfacial line separating areas with different surface elastic properties. The main attention is paid to the transmittance and the reflectance of a wave across the interface. The presented results shed a light on the influence on surface waves of surface inhomogeneity in surface elastic properties such as grain and subgrain boundaries.

Scattering of electronic waves in square and triangular lattice half-planes with monoatomic step

Scattering of electronic waves in square and triangular lattice half-planes by a step on the surface is analyzed using the nearest-neighbour tight binding approximation. The changes in lattice spacing and the transfer integral between nearest-neighbor sites near the surface are ignored. A standard application of the discrete Wiener-Hopf method leads to an exact solution of the scattering problem associated with incidence from the `bulk'. A far-field approximation of electronic wavefunction, as well as its graphical comparison with a numerical solution, are also provided. Natural applications and possible extensions are based on the bulk Brillouin zone for two dimensional lattice planes as well as surface energy bands for fcc crystals.

Synchronization of globally coupled oscillators without symmetry in the distribution of natural frequencies

The collective behavior in a population of globally coupled oscillators with randomly distributed frequencies is studied when the natural frequency distribution does not possess an even symmetry with respect to the average natural frequency of oscillators. We study the special case of absence of symmetry induced by a group of scaling transformations of the continuous distribution of frequencies. When coupling between oscillators is increased beyond a critical threshold favoring spontaneous synchronization, we found that the variation in the velocity of the traveling wave depends on the extent of asymmetry in the natural frequency distribution. In particular for large coupling this velocity is the average natural frequency whereas at the onset of synchronization it corresponds to the frequency where the Hilbert Transform of the frequency distribution vanishes.

Continuum limit of discrete Sommerfeld problems on square lattice

A low frequency approximation of the discrete Sommerfeld diffraction problems, involving the scattering of a time harmonic lattice wave incident on square lattice by a discrete Dirichlet or a discrete Neumann half-plane, is investigated. It is established that the exact solution of the discrete model converges to the solution of the continuum model, i.e. the continuous Sommerfeld problem, in certain discrete Sobolev space defined by W. Hackbusch. The proof of convergence has been provided for both types of boundary conditions when the imaginary part of incident wavenumber is positive.

Scattering by two staggered semi-infinite cracks on square lattice: an application of asymptotic Wiener-Hopf factorization

Scattering of time-harmonic plane wave by two parallel semi-infinite rows, but with staggered edges, is considered on square lattice. The condition imposed on the semi-infinite rows is a discrete analogue of Neumann boundary condition. A physical interpretation assuming an out-of-plane displacement for the particles arranged in the form of a square lattice and interacting with nearest-neighbours, associates the scattering problem to lattice wave scattering due to the presence of two staggered but parallel crack tips. The discrete scattering problem is reduced to the study of a pair of Wiener-Hopf equation on an annulus in complex plane, using Fourier transforms. Due to the offset between the crack edges, the Wiener-Hopf kernel, a 2x2 matrix, is not amenable to factorization in a desirable form and an asymptotic method is adapted. Further, an approximation in the far field is carried out using the stationary phase method. A graphical comparison between the far-field approximation based on asymptotic Wiener-Hopf method and that obtained by a numerical solution is provided. Also included is a graphical illustration of the low frequency approximation, where it has been found that the numerical solution of the scattering problem coincides with the well known formidable solution in the continuum framework.

Anti-plane surface waves in media with surface structure: discrete vs. continuum model

We present a comparison of the dispersion relations derived for anti-plane surface waves using the two distinct approaches of the surface elasticity vis-a-vis the lattice dynamics. We consider an elastic half-space with surface stresses described within the Gurtin-Murdoch model, and present a formulation of its discrete counterpart that is a square lattice half-plane with surface row of particles having mass and elastic bonds different from the ones in the bulk. As both models possess anti-plane surface waves we discuss similarities between the continuum and discrete viewpoint. In particular, in the context of the behaviour of phase velocity, we discuss the possible characterization of the surface shear modulus through the parameters involved in lattice formulation.

Conductance of discrete bifurcated waveguides as three terminal junctions

An expression for the transmission matrix based conductance is provided for the propagation of scalar waves in certain bifurcated discrete waveguides using the paradigm of a three-terminal Landauer-Buttiker junction. It is found that the conductance across the terminals of bifurcated branches forming a sharp corner, interpreted as a controller of `leakage' flux, can be tuned by manipulating the number of channels and the type of lateral confinement. Natural applications in engineering and science arise in the context of nanoscale transport involving elastic, phononic, or electronic waves. In particular, the paper includes a discussion of temperature dependent thermal conductance, assuming only the contribution of out-of-plane phonons, along with some graphical illustrations.

Kinematically restricted phonon transmission in partly-unzipped tubes of square and triangular lattices

An analysis of the transmission of `scalar' phonons across partially unzipped square and triangular lattice tubes, assuming nearest neighbor interactions between particles, is presented. The phonon transport is assumed to involve the out-of-plane phonons in the unzipped portion and the radial phonons in the tubular portion. An exact expression of reflectance and transmittance for the waves incident from either portions of the waveguide are provided explicitly, in terms of the Chebyshev polynomials, which leads to the provision of a simple expression for the ballistic conductance.
