Precursors of non-Markovianity

Using the paradigm of information backflow to characterize a non-Markovian evolution, we introduce so-called precursors of non-Markovianity, i.e. necessary properties that the system and environment state must exhibit at earlier times in order for an ensuing dynamics to be non-Markovian. In particular, we consider a quantitative framework to assess the role that established system-environment correlations together with changes in environmental states play in an emerging non-Markovian dynamics. By defining the relevant contributions in terms of the Bures distance, which is conveniently expressed by means of the quantum state fidelity, these quantities are well defined and easily applicable to a wide range of physical settings. We exemplify this by studying our precursors of non-Markovianity in discrete and continuous variable non-Markovian collision models.

Collisional unfolding of quantum Darwinism

We examine the emergence of objectivity via quantum Darwinism through the use of a collision model, i.e. where the dynamics is modeled through sequences of unitary interactions between the system and the individual constituents of the environment, termed "ancillas". By exploiting versatility of this framework, we show that one can transition from a "Darwinistic" to an "encoding" environment by simply tuning their interaction. Furthermore we establish that in order for a setting to exhibit quantum Darwinism we require a mutual decoherence to occur between the system and environmental ancillas, thus showing that system decoherence alone is not sufficient. Finally, we demonstrate that the observation of quantum Darwinism is sensitive to a non-uniform system-environment interaction.

Microscopic modelling of general time-dependent quantum Markov processes

Master equations are typically adopted to describe the dynamics of open quantum systems. Such equations are either in integro-differential or in time-local form, with the latter class more frequently adopted due to the simpler numerical methods developed to obtain the corresponding solution. Here we show that any time-local master equation with positive rates in the generator, i.e. any CP-divisible quantum process, admits a microscopic model whose reduced dynamics is well described by the given equation.

Robust multipartite entanglement generation via a collision model

We examine a simple scheme to generate genuine multipartite entangled states across disjoint qubit registers. We employ a shuttle qubit that is sequentially coupled, in an energy preserving manner, to the constituents within each register through rounds of interactions. We establish that stable $W$-type entanglement can be generated among all qubits within the registers. Furthermore, we find that the entanglement is sensitive to how the shuttle is treated, showing that a significantly larger degree is achieved by performing projective measurements on it. Finally, we assess the resilience of this entanglement generation protocol to several types of noise and imperfections, showing that it is remarkably robust.

Entropy production and correlations in a controlled non-Markovian setting

We study the relationship between (non-)Markovian evolutions, established correlations, and the entropy production rate. We consider a system qubit in contact with a thermal bath and in addition the system is strongly coupled to an ancillary qubit. We examine the steady state properties finding that the coupling leads to effective temperatures emerging in the composite system, and show that this is related to the creation of correlations between the qubits. By establishing the conditions under which the system reaches thermal equilibrium with the bath despite undergoing a non-Markovian evolution, we examine the entropy production rate, showing that its transient negativity is a sufficient sign of non-Markovianity.

System-environment correlations and Markovian embedding of quantum non-Markovian dynamics

We study the dynamics of a quantum system whose interaction with an environment is described by a collision model, i.e. the open dynamics is modelled through sequences of unitary interactions between the system and the individual constituents of the environment, termed "ancillas", which are subsequently traced out. In this setting non-Markovianity is introduced by allowing for additional unitary interactions between the ancillas. For this model, we identify the relevant system-environment correlations that lead to a non-Markovian evolution. Through an equivalent picture of the open dynamics, we introduce the notion of "memory depth" where these correlations are established between the system and a suitably sized memory rendering the overall system+memory evolution Markovian. We extend our analysis to show that while most system-environment correlations are irrelevant for the dynamical characterization of the process, they generally play an important role in the thermodynamic description. Finally, we show that under an energy-preserving system-environment interaction, a non-monotonic time behaviour of the heat flux serves as an indicator of non-Markovian behaviour.

Generalized trace distance approach to quantum non-Markovianity and detection of initial correlations

A measure of quantum non-Markovianity for an open system dynamics, based on revivals of the distinguishability between system states, has been introduced in the literature using the trace distance as quantifier for distinguishability. Recently it has been suggested to use as measure for the distinguishability of quantum states the trace norm of Helstrom matrices, given by weighted differences of statistical operators. Here we show that this new approach, which generalizes the original one, is consistent with the interpretation of information flow between the system and its environment associated to the original definition. To this aim we prove a bound on the growth of the external information, that is information which cannot be accessed by performing measurements on the system only, as quantified by means of the Helstrom matrix. We further demonstrate by means of example that it is of relevance in generalizing schemes for the local detection of initial correlations based on the increase of internal information. Finally we exploit this viewpoint to show the optimality of a previously introduced strategy for the local detection of quantum correlations.

Mixing-induced quantum non-Markovianity and information flow

Mixing dynamical maps describing open quantum systems can lead from Markovian to non-Markovian processes. Being surprising and counter-intuitive, this result has been used as argument against characterization of non-Markovianity in terms of information exchange. Here, we demonstrate that, quite the contrary, mixing can be understood in a natural way which is fully consistent with existing theories of memory effects. In particular, we show how mixing-induced non-Markovianity can be interpreted in terms of the distinguishability of quantum states, system-environment correlations and the information flow between system and environment.

Non-Markovianity by undersampling in quantum optical simulators

We unveil a novel source of non-Markovianity for the dynamics of quantum systems, which appears when the system does not explore the full set of dynamical trajectories in the interaction with its environment. We term this effect non-Markovianity by undersampling and demonstrate its appearance in the operation of an all-optical quantum simulator involving a polarization qubit interacting with a dephasing fluctuating environment.

Full counting statistics approach to the quantum non-equilibrium Landauer bound

We develop the full counting statistics of dissipated heat to explore the relation with Landauer's principle. Combining the two-time measurement protocol for the reconstruction of the statistics of heat with the minimal set of assumptions for Landauer's principle to hold, we derive a general one-parameter family of upper and lower bounds on the mean dissipated heat from a system to its environment. Furthermore, we establish a connection with the degree of non-unitality of the system's dynamics and show that, if a large deviation function exists as stationary limit of the above cumulant generating function, then our family of lower and upper bounds can be used to witness and understand first-order dynamical phase transitions. For the purpose of demonstration, we apply these bounds to an externally pumped three level system coupled to a finite sized thermal environment.

Nonequilibrium quantum bounds to Landauer's principle: Tightness and effectiveness

We assess two different non-equilibrium quantum Landauer bounds: the traditional approach based on the change in entropy, referred to as the `entropic bound', and one based on the details of the dynamical map, referred to as the `thermodynamic bound'. By first restricting to a simple exactly solvable model of a single two level system coupled to a finite dimensional thermal environment and by exploiting an excitation preserving interaction, we establish the dominant role played by the population terms in dictating the tightness of these bounds with respect to the dissipated heat, and clearly establish that coherences only affect the entropic bound. Furthermore, we show that sharp boundaries between the relative performance of the two quantities emerge, and find that there are clear instances where both approaches return a bound weaker than Clausius' statement of the second law, rendering them ineffective. Finally we show that our results extend to generic interaction terms.

Quantum non-Markovian piecewise dynamics from collision models

Recently, a large class of quantum non-Markovian piecewise dynamics for an open quantum system obeying closed evolution equations has been introduced [B. Vacchini, Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 230401 (2016)]. These dynamics have been defined in terms of a waiting-time distribution between quantum jumps, along with quantum maps describing the effect of jumps and the system's evolution between them. Here, we present a quantum collision model with memory, whose reduced dynamics in the continuous-time limit reproduces the above class of non-Markovian piecewise dynamics, thus providing an explicit microscopic realization.

All-optical quantum simulator of qubit noisy channels

We suggest and demonstrate an all-optical quantum simulator for single-qubit noisy channels originating from the interaction with a fluctuating field. The simulator employs the polarization degree of freedom of a single photon, and exploits its spectral components to average over the realizations of the stochastic dynamics. As a proof of principle, we run simulations of dephasing channels driven either by Gaussian (Ornstein-Uhlenbeck) or non-Gaussian (random telegraph) stochastic processes.

Generalized master equations leading to completely positive dynamics

We provide a general construction of quantum generalized master equations with memory kernel leading to well defined, that is completely positive and trace preserving, time evolutions. The approach builds on an operator generalization of memory kernels appearing in the description of non-Markovian classical processes, and puts into evidence the non uniqueness of the relationship arising due to the typical quantum issue of operator ordering. The approach provides a physical interpretation of the structure of the kernels, and its connection with the classical viewpoint allows for a trajectory description of the dynamics. Previous apparently unrelated results are now connected in a unified framework, which further allows to phenomenologically construct a large class of non-Markovian evolutions taking as starting point collections of time dependent maps and instantaneous transformations describing the microscopic interaction dynamics.

Energy backflow in strongly coupled non-Markovian continuous-variables systems

By employing the full counting statistics formalism, we characterize the first moment of energy that is exchanged during a generally non-Markovian evolution in non-driven continuous variables systems. In particular, we focus on the evaluation of the energy flowing back from the environment into the open quantum system. We apply these results to the quantum Brownian motion, where these quantities are calculated both analytically, under the weak coupling assumption, and numerically also in the strong coupling regime. Finally, we characterize the non-Markovianity of the reduced dynamics through a recently introduced witness based on the so-called Gaussian interferometric power and we discuss its relationship with the energy backflow measure.

Decoherence and noise in open quantum system dynamics

We consider the description of quantum noise within the framework of the standard Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics applied to a composite system environment setting. Averaging over the environmental degrees of freedom leads to a stochastic quantum dynamics, described by equations complying with the constraints arising from the statistical structure of quantum mechanics. Simple examples are considered in the framework of open system dynamics described within a master equation approach, pointing in particular to the appearance of the phenomenon of decoherence and to the relevance of quantum correlation functions of the environment in the determination of the action of quantum noise.

Reduced dynamical maps in the presence of initial correlations

We introduce a general framework for the construction of completely positive dynamical evolutions in the presence of system-environment initial correlations. The construction relies upon commutativity of the compatibility domain obtained by considering the marginals with respect to the environmental degrees of freedom of the considered class of correlated states. Our approach allows to consider states whose discord is not necessarily zero and explicitly show the non-uniqueness of the completely positive extensions of the obtained dynamical map outside the compatibility domain. The relevance of such maps for the treatment of open quantum system dynamics is discussed and connection to previous literature is critically assessed.

Energy backflow and non-Markovian dynamics

We explore the behavior in time of the energy exchange between a system of interest and its environment, together with its relationship to the non-Markovianity of the system dynamics. In order to evaluate the energy exchange we rely on the full counting statistics formalism, which we use to evaluate the first moment of its probability distribution. We focus in particular on the energy backflow from environment to system, to which we associate a suitable condition and quantifier, which enables us to draw a connection with a recently introduced notion of non-Markovianity based on information backflow. This quantifier is then studied in detail in the case of the spin-boson model, described within a second order time-convolutionless approximation, observing that non-Markovianity allows for the observation of energy backflow. This analysis allows us to identify the parameters region in which energy backflow is higher.
