Meson-meson scattering lengths at maximum isospin from lattice QCD

We summarize our lattice QCD determinations of the pion-pion, pion-kaon and kaon-kaon s-wave scattering lengths at maximal isospin with a particular focus on the extrapolation to the physical point and the usage of next-to-leading order chiral perturbation theory to do so. We employ data at three values of the lattice spacing and pion masses ranging from around 230 MeV to around 450 MeV, applying Luescher's finite volume method to compute the scattering lengths. We find that leading order chiral perturbation theory is surprisingly close to our data even in the kaon-kaon case for our entire range of pion masses.

Hadron-Hadron Interactions from $N_f=2+1+1$ Lattice QCD: The $ρ$-resonance

We present an investigation of the Rho-meson from Nf=2+1+1 flavour lattice QCD. The calculation is performed based on gauge configuration ensembles produced by the ETM collaboration with three lattice spacing values and pion masses ranging from 230 MeV to 500 MeV. Applying the Lüscher method phase shift curves are determined for all ensembles separately. Assuming a Breit-Wigner form, the Rho-meson mass and width are determined by a fit to these phase shift curves. Mass and width combined are then extrapolated to the chiral limit, while lattice artefacts are not detectable within our statistical uncertainties. For the Rho-meson mass extrapolated to the physical point we find good agreement with experiment. The corresponding decay width differs by about two standard deviations from the experimental value.

Topological susceptibility and $η'$ meson mass from $N_f=2$ lattice QCD at the physical point

In this paper we explore the computation of topological susceptibility and $η'$ meson mass in $N_f=2$ flavor QCD using lattice techniques with physical value of the pion mass as well as larger pion mass values. We observe that the physical point can be reached without a significant increase in the statistical noise. The mass of the $η'$ meson can be obtained from both fermionic two point functions and topological charge density correlation functions, giving compatible results. With the pion mass dependence of the $η'$ mass being flat we arrive at $M_{η'}= 772(18)\ \mathrm{MeV}$ without an explicit continuum limit. For the topological susceptibility we observe a linear dependence on $M_π^2$, however, with an additional constant stemming from lattice artifacts.

Finite-size scaling for four-dimensional Higgs-Yukawa model near the Gaussian fixed point

We analyse finite-size scaling behaviour of a four-dimensional Higgs-Yukawa model near the Gaussian infrared fixed point. Through improving the mean-field scaling laws by solving one-loop renormalisation group equations, the triviality property of this model can be manifested in the volume-dependence of moments of the scalar-field zero mode. The scaling formulae for the moments are derived in this work with the inclusion of the leading-logarithmic corrections. To test these formulae, we confront them with data from lattice simulations in a simpler model, namely the O(4) pure scalar theory, and find numerical evidence of good agreement. Our results of the finite-size scaling can in principle be employed to establish triviality of Higgs-Yukawa models, or to search for alternative scenarios in studying their fixed-point structure, if sufficiently large lattices can be reached.

Hadron-Hadron Interactions from $N_f=2+1+1$ Lattice QCD: $I=3/2$ $πK$ Scattering Length

In this paper we report on results for the s-wave scattering length of the $π$-$K$ system in the $I=3/2$ channel from $N_f=2+1+1$ Lattice QCD. The calculation is based on gauge configurations generated by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with pion masses ranging from about $230$ to $450\,\text{MeV}$ at three values of the lattice spacing. Our main result reads $M_π\,a_0^{3/2,\text{phys}} = -0.059(2)$. Using chiral perturbation theory we are also able to estimate $M_π\,a_0^{1/2,\text{phys}} = 0.163(3)$. The error includes statistical and systematic uncertainties, and for the latter in particular errors from the chiral and continuum extrapolations.

The $η^\prime$ meson at the physical point with $N_f=2$ Wilson twisted mass fermions

We present results for the eta prime meson and the topological susceptibility in two flavour lattice QCD. The results are obtained using Wilson twisted mass fermions at maximal twist with pion masses ranging from 340 MeV down to the physical point. A comparison to literature values is performed giving a handle on discretisation effects.

Testing a non-perturbative mechanism for elementary fermion mass generation: numerical results

Based on a recent proposal according to which elementary particle masses could be generated by a non-perturbative dynamical phenomenon, alternative to the Higgs mechanism, we carry out lattice simulations of a model where a non-abelian strongly interacting fermion doublet is also coupled to a doublet of complex scalar fields via a Yukawa and an "irrelevant" Wilson-like term. In this pioneering study we use naive fermions and work in the quenched approximation. We present preliminary numerical results both in the Wigner and in the Nambu-Goldstone phase, focusing on the observables relevant to check the occurrence of the conjectured dynamical fermion mass generation effect in the continuum limit of the critical theory in its spontaneously broken phase.

Testing a non-perturbative mechanism for elementary fermion mass generation: lattice setup

In this contribution we lay down a lattice setup that allows for the non-perturbative study of a field theoretical model where a SU(2) fermion doublet, subjected to non-Abelian gauge interactions, is also coupled to a complex scalar field doublet via a Yukawa and an "irrelevant" Wilson-like term. Using naive fermions in quenched approximation and based on the renormalized Ward identities induced by purely fermionic chiral transformations, lattice observables are discussed that enable: a) in the Wigner phase, the determinations of the critical Yukawa coupling value where the purely fermionic chiral transformation become a symmetry up to lattice artifacts; b) in the Nambu-Goldstone phase of the resulting critical theory, a stringent test of the actual generation of a fermion mass term of non-perturbative origin. A soft twisted fermion mass term is introduced to circumvent the problem of exceptional configurations, and observables are then calculated in the limit of vanishing twisted mass.

Higgs-Yukawa model on the lattice

We present results from two projects on lattice calculations for the Higgs-Yukawa model. First we report progress on the search of first-order thermal phase transitions in the presence of a dimension-six operator, with the choices of bare couplings that lead to viable phenomenological predictions. In this project the simulations are performed using overlap fermions to implement the required chiral symmetry. Secondly, our study for applying finite-size scaling techniques near the Gaussian fixed point of the Higgs-Yukawa model is presented. We discuss the analytical formulae for the Higgs Yukawa model and show results for a first numerical study in the pure $O(4)$ scalar sector of the theory.

Hadron-Hadron Interactions from $N_f=2+1+1$ Lattice QCD: isospin-1 $KK$ scattering length

We present results for the interaction of two kaons at maximal isospin. The calculation is based on $N_f=2+1+1$ flavour gauge configurations generated by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with pion masses ranging from about $230$ to $450\,\textrm{MeV}$ at three values of the lattice spacing. The elastic scattering length $a_0^{I=1}$ is calculated at several values of the bare strange and light quark masses. We find $M_K a_0 = -0.385(16)_{\textrm{stat}} (^{+0}_{-12})_{m_s}(^{+0}_{-5})_{Z_P}(4)_{r_f}$ as the result of a combined extrapolation to the continuum and to the physical point, where the first error is statistical, and the three following are systematical. This translates to $a_0 = -0.154(6)_{\textrm{stat}}(^{+0}_{-5})_{m_s} (^{+0}_{-2})_{Z_P}(2)_{r_f}\,\textrm{fm}$.

Kaon-kaon scattering at maximal isospin from $N_f=2+1+1$ twisted mass lattice QCD

We present results for the interaction of two kaons at maximal isospin. The calculation is based on 2+1+1 flavour gauge configurations generated by the ETM Collaboration (ETMC) featuring pion masses ranging from about 230 MeV to 450 MeV at three values of the lattice spacing. The elastic scattering length $a_0^{I=1}$ is calculated at several values of the bare strange quark and light quark masses. We find $M_K a_0 =-0.397(11)(_{-8}^{+0})$ as the result of a chiral and continuum extrapolation to the physical point. This number is compared to other lattice results.

Check of a new non-perturbative mechanism for elementary fermion mass generation

We consider a field theoretical model where a SU(2) fermion doublet, subjected to non-Abelian gauge interactions, is also coupled to a complex scalar field doublet via a Yukawa and an irrelevant Wilson-like term. Despite the presence of these two chiral breaking operators in the Lagrangian, an exact symmetry acting on fermions and scalars prevents perturbative mass corrections. In the phase where fermions are massless (Wigner phase) the Yukawa coupling can be tuned to a critical value at which chiral transformations acting on fermions only become a symmetry of the theory (up to cutoff effects). In the Nambu-Goldstone phase of the critical theory a fermion mass term of dynamical origin is expected to arise in the Ward identities of the purely fermionic chiral transformations. Such a non-perturbative mechanism of dynamical mass generation can provide a "natural" (à la 't Hooft) alternative to the Higgs mechanism adopted in the Standard Model. Here we lay down the theoretical framework necessary to demonstrate the existence of this mechanism by means of lattice simulations.

Finite Size Scaling of the Higgs-Yukawa Model near the Gaussian Fixed Point

We study the scaling properties of Higgs-Yukawa models. Using the technique of Finite-Size Scaling, we are able to derive scaling functions that describe the observables of the model in the vicinity of a Gaussian fixed point. A feasibility study of our strategy is performed for the pure scalar theory in the weak-coupling regime. Choosing the on-shell renormalisation scheme gives us an advantage to fit the scaling functions against lattice data with only a small number of fit parameters. These formulae can be used to determine the universality of the observed phase transitions, and thus play an essential role in future investigations of Higgs-Yukawa models, in particular in the strong Yukawa coupling region.

Lattice study of the Higgs-Yukawa model in and beyond the Standard Model

We derive finite-size scaling formulae for four-dimensional Higgs-Yukawa models near the Gaussian fixed point. These formulae will play an essential role in future, detailed investigation of such models. In particular, they can be used to determine the nature of the observed phase transitions, and confirm or rule out the possibility of having non-trivial fixed points in the Higgs-Yukawa models. Our scaling formula for Binder's cumulant is tested against lattice simulations carried out at weak couplings, and good agreement is found. As a separate project, we also present preliminary results from our study of a chirally-invariant Higgs-Yukawa model including a dimension-six operator at finite temperature. Our work provides first indications of first-order temperature-induced phase transitions near the infinite cutoff limit in this model.

A lattice study of a chirally invariant Higgs-Yukawa model including a higher dimensional $Φ^6$-term

We discuss the non-thermal phase structure of a chirally invariant Higgs-Yukawa model on the lattice in the presence of a higher dimensional $Φ^6$-term. For the exploration of the phase diagram we use analytical, lattice perturbative calculations of the constraint effectice potential as well as numerical simulations. We also present first results of the effects of the $Φ^6$-term on the lower Higgs boson mass bounds.

Phase structure and Higgs boson mass in a Higgs-Yukawa model with a dimension-6 operator

We investigate the impact of a $λ_6 φ^6$ term included in a chirally invariant lattice Higgs-Yukawa model. Such a term could emerge from BSM physics at some larger energy scale. We map out the phase structure of the Higgs-Yukawa model with positive $λ_6$ and negative quartic self coupling of the scalar fields. To this end, we evaluate the constraint effective potential in lattice perturbation theory and also determine the magnetization of the model via numerical simulations which allow us to reach also non-perturbative values of the couplings. As a result, we find a complex phase structure with first and second order phase transitions identified through the magnetization. Further we analyze the effect of such a $φ^6$ term on the lower Higgs boson mass bound to see, whether the standard model lower mass bound can be altered.

Pi-Pi Scattering with Nf=2+1+1 Twisted Mass Fermions

Pi-Pi scattering is investigated for the first time for Nf=2+1+1 dynamical quark flavours using Wilson twisted mass fermions. Lüscher's finite size method is used to relate energy shifts in finite volume to scattering quantities like the scattering length in the I=2 channel. The computation is performed at several pion masses and lattice spacings utilising the stochastic LapH method.

Testing the stochastic LapH method in the twisted mass formulation

We present first results using the stochastic Laplace-Heaviside (sLapH) method in the twisted mass formulation. The calculations are performed on gauge configurations provided by the European Twisted Mass (ETM) collaboration with 2+1+1 dynamical quark flavours at a single value of the lattice spacing. In particular, we compute disconnected contributions to flavour singlet pseudo-scalar mesons and compare sLapH to standard volume noise methods.
