Antenna Tilt Failure Detection and Estimation via Integrated Sensing and Communications

This paper addresses the critical sensitivity issue of narrow-beam communication systems to physical misalignments and exploits the potential of Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) technology to propose a sensor-free antenna tilt failure detection and estimation framework. The proposed methods utilize environmental static clutter as geometric anchors to monitor systematic gain shifts in clutter heat maps. The proposed methods are introduced for precise antenna tilt detection and estimation using the standard 5G NR frame structure and two different waveforms. Numerical results show the potential of the proposed framework to enable autonomous, self healing network maintenance without the need for external sensors.

Experimental Performance of a 5G N78 Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface: From Controlled Measurements to Commercial Network Deployment

This paper presents a real-world experimental analysis of a modular reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) prototype designed to operate in the 5G N78 band. Unlike most RIS studies in the literature that focus on simulations or controlled setups, the proposed system is validated through three phases consisting of indoor measurements, outdoor long-range tests, and deployment in a live commercial 5G standalone network. The RIS is exploited to enhance coverage in a non-line-of-sight (NLoS) zone, identified through baseline drive tests. Results show promising gains in RSRP and SINR, while also restoring 5G service at user locations where access was previously not available. The results highlight the practical potential of RIS for coverage enhancement in operational 5G networks.

Experimental Performances of mmWave RIS-assisted 5G-Advanced Wireless Deployments in Urban Environments

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a groundbreaking technology for 6G wireless communication networks, enabling cost-effective control over wireless propagation environment. By dynamically manipulating its codebook so as to deflect the direction of the reflected electromagnetic wave, RIS can achieve enhanced signal quality, extended coverage, and interference mitigation. This study presents experimental performance of ZTE Dynamic 2.0 RIS products through a series of real-world tests conducted on Turkcell's millimeter-wave (mmWave) testbed. The evaluation involves network coverage extension in urban areas, multi-user efficiency, and the integration of virtual reality technology to support immersive applications in next-generation 6G networks. Through a comprehensive measurement-based analysis, the performance of the RIS product is demonstrated, highlighting its potential to address critical challenges in mmWave communications and to enable advanced 6G use cases.

A Comparative and Measurement-Based Study on Real-Time Network KPI Extraction Methods for 5G and Beyond Applications

Key performance indicators (KPIs), which can be extracted from the standardized interfaces of network equipment defined by current standards, constitute a primary data source that can be leveraged in the development of non-standardized new equipment, architectures, and computational tools. In next-generation technologies, the demand for data has evolved beyond the conventional log generation or export capabilities provided by existing licensed network monitoring tools. There is now a growing need to collect such data at specific time intervals and with defined granularities. At this stage, the development of real-time KPI extraction methods and enabling their exchange between both standardized/commercialized and non-standardized components or tools has become increasingly critical. This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of three distinct KPI extraction methodologies applied to two commercially available devices. The analysis aims to uncover the strengths, weaknesses, and overall efficacy of these approaches under varying conditions, and highlights the critical insights into the practical capabilities and limitations. The findings serve as a foundational guide for the seamless integration and robust testing of novel technologies and approaches within commercial telecommunication networks. This work aspires to bridge the gap between technological innovation and real-world applicability, fostering enhanced decision-making in network deployment and optimization.

Measurement-based Channel Characterization for A2A and A2G Wireless Drone Communication Systems

This paper presents field measurement-based channel characterization for air--to--ground (A2G) and air--to--air (A2A) wireless communication systems using two drones equipped with lightweight software-defined radios. A correlation-based channel sounder is employed such that the transmitting drone broadcasts the sounding waveform with a pseudo-noise sequence and the receiving drone captures the sounding waveform together with the location information for the post-processing analysis. The path loss results demonstrate that the measurement and flat-earth two-ray results have similar trends for A2G while the measurement and free space path loss are similar to each other for A2A. The time delays between the direct path and multipath components are widely spread for A2A while the multipath components are mostly concentrated around the direct path for A2G generating a more challenging communication environment. We observe that the reflections from several buildings having metal roofs and claddings on the measurement site cause sudden peaks in the root-mean-square delay spread. The results indicate that the A2A channel has better characteristics than the A2G under similar mobility conditions.

Measurement based FHSS-type Drone Controller Detection at 2.4GHz: An STFT Approach

The applications of the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) increase rapidly in everyday life, thus detecting the UAVs and/or its pilot is a crucial task. Many UAVs adopt frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) technology to efficiently and securely communicate with their radio controllers (RC) where the signal follows a hopping pattern to prevent harmful interference. In order to realistically distinguish the frequency hopping (FH) RC signals, one should consider the real-world radio propagation environment since many UAVs communicate with RCs from a far distance in which signal faces both slow and fast fading phenomenons. Therefore, in this study different from the literature, we consider a system that works under real-conditions by capturing over-the-air signals at hilly terrain suburban environments in the presence of foliages. We adopt the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) approach to capture the hopping sequence of each signal. Furthermore, time guards associated with each hopping sequence are calculated using the autocorrelation function (ACF) of the STFT which results in differentiating the each UAV RC signal accurately. In order to validate the performance of the proposed method, the results of normalized mean square error (MSE) respect to different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), window size and Tx-Rx separation values are given.
