Non-stationary Energy in General Relativity

Using the time evolution equations of (cosmological) General Relativity in the first order Fischer-Marsden form, we construct an integral that measures the amount of non-stationary energy on a given spacelike hypersurface in $D$ dimensions. The integral vanishes for stationary spacetimes; and with a further assumption, reduces to Dain's invariant on the boundary of the hypersurface which is defined with the Einstein constraints and a fourth order equation defining approximate Killing symmetries.

Conserved Charges in Extended Theories of Gravity

We give a detailed review of construction of conserved quantities in extended theories of gravity for asymptotically maximally symmetric spacetimes and carry out explicit computations for various solutions. Our construction is based on the Killing charge method, and a proper discussion of the conserved charges of extended gravity theories with this method requires studying the corresponding charges in Einstein's theory with or without a cosmological constant. Hence we study the ADM charges (in the asymptotically flat case but in generic viable coordinates), the AD charges (in generic Einstein spaces, including the anti-de Sitter spacetimes) and the ADT charges in anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We also discuss the conformal properties and the behavior of these charges under large gauge transformations as well as the linearization instability issue which explains the vanishing charge problem for some particular extended theories. We devote a long discussion to the quasi-local and off-shell generalization of conserved charges in the 2+1 dimensional Chern-Simons like theories and suggest their possible relevance to the entropy of black holes.

Non-Einsteinian Black Holes in Generic 3D Gravity Theories

The Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole metric solves the three-dimensional Einstein's theory with a negative cosmological constant as well as all the generic higher derivative gravity theories based on the metric; as such it is a universal solution. Here, we find, in all generic higher derivative gravity theories, new universal non-Einsteinian solutions obtained as Kerr-Schild type deformations of the BTZ black hole. Among these, the deformed non-extremal BTZ black hole loses its event horizon while the deformed extremal one remains intact as a black hole in any generic gravity theory.

Exotic Massive Gravity: Causality and a Birkhoff-like Theorem

We study the local causality issue via the Shapiro time-delay computations in the on-shell consistent exotic massive gravity in three dimensions. The theory shows time-delay as opposed to time-advance despite having a ghost at the linearized level both for asymptotically flat and anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We also prove a Birkhoff-like theorem: any solution with a hypersurface orthogonal non-null Killing vector field is conformally flat; and find some exact solutions.

Second Order Perturbation Theory in General Relativity: Taub Charges as Integral Constraints

In a nonlinear theory, such as General Relativity, linearized field equations around an exact solution are necessary but not sufficient conditions for linearized solutions. Therefore, the linearized field equations can have some solutions which do not come from the linearization of possible exact solutions. This fact can make the perturbation theory ill-defined, which would be a problem both at the classical and semiclassical quantization level. Here we study the first and second order perturbation theory in cosmological Einstein gravity and give the explicit form of the integral constraint, which is called the Taub charge, on the first order solutions for spacetimes with a Killing symmetry and a compact hypersurface without a boundary.

New approach to conserved charges of generic gravity in AdS

Starting from a divergence-free rank-4 tensor of which the trace is the cosmological Einstein tensor, we give a construction of conserved charges in Einstein's gravity and its higher derivative extensions for asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. The current yielding the charge is explicitly gauge-invariant, and the charge expression involves the linearized Riemann tensor at the boundary. Hence, to compute the mass and angular momenta in these spacetimes, one just needs to compute the linearized Riemann tensor. We give two examples.

Graviton Mass and Memory

Gravitational memory, a residual change, arises after a finite gravitational wave pulse interacts with free masses. We calculate the memory effect in massive gravity as a function of the graviton mass $(m_g)$ and show that it is discretely different from the result of general relativity: the memory is reduced not just via the usual expected Yukawa decay but by a numerical factor which survives even in the massless limit. For the strongest existing bounds on the graviton mass, the memory is essentially wiped out for the sources located at distances above 10 Mpc. On the other hand, for the weaker bounds found in the LIGO observations, the memory is reduced to zero for distances above 0.1 Pc. Hence, we suggest that careful observations of the gravitational wave memory effect can rule out the graviton mass or significantly bound it. We also show that adding higher curvature terms reduces the memory effect.

Conserved charges in AdS: A new formula

We give a new construction of conserved charges in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in Einstein's gravity. The new formula is explicitly gauge-invariant and makes direct use of the linearized curvature tensor instead of the metric perturbation. As an example, we compute the mass and angular momentum of the Kerr-AdS black holes.

Linearization Instability for Generic Gravity in AdS

In general relativity, perturbation theory about a background solution fails if the background spacetime has a Killing symmetry and a compact spacelike Cauchy surface. This failure, dubbed as {\it linearization instability}, shows itself as non-integrability of the perturbative infinitesimal deformation to a finite deformation of the background. Namely, the linearized field equations have spurious solutions which cannot be obtained from the linearization of exact solutions. In practice, one can show the failure of the linear perturbation theory by showing that a certain quadratic (integral) constraint on the linearized solutions is not satisfied. For non-compact Cauchy surfaces, the situation is different and for example, Minkowski space having a non-compact Cauchy surface, is linearization stable. Here we study, the linearization instability in generic metric theories of gravity where Einstein's theory is modified with additional curvature terms. We show that, unlike the case of general relativity, for modified theories even in the non-compact Cauchy surface cases, there are some theories which show linearization instability about their anti-de Sitter backgrounds. Recent $D$ dimensional critical and three dimensional chiral gravity theories are two such examples. This observation sheds light on the paradoxical behavior of vanishing conserved charges (mass, angular momenta) for non-vacuum solutions, such as black holes, in these theories.

Bachian Gravity in Three Dimensions

In three dimensions, there exist modifications of Einstein's gravity akin to the topologically massive gravity that describe massive gravitons about maximally symmetric backgrounds. These theories are built on the three-dimensional version of the Bach tensor (a curl of the Cotton-York tensor) and its higher derivative generalizations; and they are on-shell consistent without a Lagrangian description based on the metric tensor alone. We give a generic construction of these models, find the spectra and compute the conserved quantities for the Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole.

Holographic c-theorem and Born-Infeld Gravity Theories

The requirement of the existence of a holographic c-function for higher derivative theories is a very restrictive one and hence most theories do not possess this property. Here, we show that, when some of the parameters are fixed, the $D\geq3$ Born-Infeld gravity theories admit a holographic c-function. We work out the details of the $D=3$ theory with no free parameters, which is a non-minimal Born-Infeld type extension of new massive gravity. Moreover, we show that these theories generate an infinite number of higher derivative models admitting a c-function in a suitable expansion and therefore they can be studied at any truncated order.

Linearization Instability of Chiral Gravity

Carrying out an analysis of the constraints and their linearizations on a spacelike hypersurface, we show that topologically massive gravity has a linearization instability at the chiral gravity limit about $AdS_3$. We also calculate the symplectic structure for all the known perturbative modes (including the log-mode) for the linearized field equations and find it to be degenerate (non-invertible) hence these modes do not approximate exact solutions and so do not belong to the linearized phase space of the theory. Naive perturbation theory fails: the linearized field equations are necessary but not sufficient in finding viable linearized solutions. This has important consequences for both classical and possible quantum versions of the theory.

Entropy in Born-Infeld Gravity

There is a class of higher derivative gravity theories that are in some sense natural extensions of cosmological Einstein's gravity with a unique maximally symmetric classical vacuum and only a massless spin-2 excitation about the vacuum and no other perturbative modes. These theories are of the Born-Infeld determinantal form. We show that the macroscopic dynamical entropy as defined by Wald for bifurcate Killing horizons in these theories are equivalent to the geometric Bekenstein-Hawking entropy (or more properly Gibbons-Hawking entropy for the case of de Sitter spacetime) but given with an effective gravitational constant which encodes all the information about the background spacetime and the underlying theory. We also show that the higher curvature terms increase the entropy. We carry out the computations in generic n-dimensions including the particularly interesting limits of three, four and infinite number of dimensions. We also give a preliminary discussion about the black hole entropy in generic dimensions for the BI theories.

Unitarity Problems in 3$D$ Gravity Theories

We revisit the problem of the bulk-boundary unitarity clash in 2 + 1 dimensional gravity theories, which has been an obstacle in providing a viable dual two-dimensional conformal field theory for bulk gravity in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. Chiral gravity, which is a particular limit of cosmological topologically massive gravity (TMG), suffers from pertur- bative log-modes with negative energies inducing a non-unitary logarithmic boundary field theory. We show here that any f(R) extension of TMG does not improve the situation. We also study the perturbative modes in the metric formulation of minimal massive gravity- originally constructed in a first-order formulation-and find that the massive mode has again negative energy except in the chiral limit. We comment on this issue and also discuss a possible solution to the problem of negative energy modes. In any of these theories, the infinitesimal dangerous deformations might not be integrable to full solutions; this suggests a linearization instability of AdS spacetime in the direction of the perturbative log-modes.

Causality in 3D Massive Gravity Theories

We study the constraints coming from local causality requirement in various $2+1$ dimensional dynamical theories of gravity. In topologically massive gravity, with a single parity non-invariant massive degree of freedom, and in new massive gravity, with two massive spin-$2$ degrees of freedom, causality and unitarity are compatible with each other and both require the Newton's constant to be negative. In their extensions, such as the Born-Infeld gravity and the minimal massive gravity the situation is similar and quite different from their higher dimensional counterparts, such as quadratic (e.g., Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet) or cubic theories, where causality and unitarity are in conflict. We study the problem both in asymptotically flat and asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces.

Kerr-Schild--Kundt Metrics are Universal

We define (non-Einsteinian) universal metrics as the metrics that solve the source-free covariant field equations of generic gravity theories. Here, extending the rather scarce family of universal metrics known in the literature, we show that the Kerr-Schild--Kundt class of metrics are universal. Besides being interesting on their own, these metrics can provide consistent backgrounds for quantum field theory at extremely high energies.

From Smooth Curves to Universal Metrics

A special class of metrics, called universal metrics, solve all gravity theories defined by covariant field equations purely based on the metric tensor. Since we currently lack the knowledge of what the full of quantum-corrected field equations of gravity are at a given microscopic length scale, these metrics are particularly important in understanding quantum fields in curved backgrounds in a consistent way. But, finding explicit universal metrics has been a hard problem as there does not seem to be a procedure for it. In this work, we overcome this difficulty and give a construction of universal metrics of d-dimensional spacetime from curves constrained to live in a (d-1)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime or a Euclidean space.
