Reconstructing sign-switching dark energy histories: Scalar-field regularity, conditional potential comparison, and representative dynamics

Phenomenologically similar sign-switching dark-energy histories need not have comparable scalar-field realizations. We reconstruct minimally coupled scalars with fixed kinetic sign for three prescribed histories: the error-function model (ECDM), the compact smooth-step model (SSCDM), and the ladder-like model (L$Λ$CDM). Continuous negative-to-positive density crossings select the phantom branch. ECDM yields a smooth on-shell potential at every finite redshift; its equation-of-state pole at the density zero is only a ratio singularity. Exact SSCDM has a regular trajectory but a $C^1$, non-$C^2$ endpoint potential, $V-V_e\propto|ϕ-ϕ_e|^{4/3}$. Its non-Lipschitz force permits delayed departures from frozen plateaus, so the reconstructed potential and plateau data do not uniquely generate the prescribed history. The exact Ladder requires distributional kinetic stress and has no ordinary classical realization in the adopted one-field action. In conditional synthetic comparisons, the sigmoid--Gaussian family ranks highest for ECDM and the generalized axion-like family for SSCDM, although the fitted axion exponents $n<1/2$ imply a divergent endpoint force. Representative regular forward solutions exhibit negative-to-positive scalar-density crossings, with the potential zero preceding the density zero. In a closure test, unretuned evolution of the top-ranked ECDM template tracks the target approximately, $\max|Δ\widetildeΩ_ϕ|\simeq0.16$. Closure fails structurally for compact SSCDM: no potential with a locally Lipschitz force can reproduce its exact finite-duration frozen plateaus from exactly frozen initial data. Field-map existence, invertibility, and endpoint regularity must be assessed before interpreting a phenomenological history as scalar dynamics. The phantom action is used only as a homogeneous effective proxy.

Alleviating the Hubble Tension with Smooth Sign-Switching Dark Energy: Full CMB Constraints with DESI and PantheonPlus

Sign-switching dark energy has recently been proposed as a minimal modification of the late-time expansion history aimed at alleviating tensions within the standard cosmological model. In this work, we investigate ECDM, a smooth realisation of this scenario, with the dark energy density gradually transitioning from a negative to a positive value. We develop a consistent formulation of the perturbation equations that remains well behaved even when the dark energy equation-of-state parameter diverges during the transition. We confront the model with a comprehensive set of cosmological observations, including cosmic microwave background measurements from Planck 2018, ACT DR6 and SPT-3G, baryon acoustic oscillation measurements from DESI DR2, Type Ia supernova distances from Pantheon+, and local Hubble constant measurement of SH0ES. The inclusion of perturbations allows us to assess the impact of the model on structure growth and CMB anisotropies, providing a more thorough test of sign-switching dark energy. Our results show that this class of models is fully compatible with current precision cosmological observations while alleviating the Hubble tension and providing a compelling modification of the late-time dynamics of the Universe.

Sign-Switching Dark Energy: Smooth Transitions with Recent DESI DR2 Observations

Sign-switching dark energy provides a novel mechanism for modifying the late-time expansion history of the Universe without invoking additional fields or finely tuned initial conditions. In this work, we investigate a class of background--level cosmological models in which the dark energy contribution changes sign at a transition redshift $z_\dagger$, producing a sharp deviation from standard $Λ$CDM dynamics. We confront these models with a comprehensive set of cosmological observations, including Planck 18 cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements, DESI DR2 Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data and the Pantheon+ $\&$ SH0ES Type Ia supernova sample (SN). Using a full Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis, we find that the sign-switching scenario significantly alleviates the Hubble tension while obtaining better results when statistically comparing with $Λ$CDM, as quantified by the Akaike and Bayesian information Criteria. Although the model is explored only at the background level, the improvement in the inferred Hubble constant demonstrates that sign-switching dark energy offers a promising and physically economical pathway toward resolving late-universe discrepancies.

The Sign-Switching of the Cosmological Constant

We propose and investigate a class of dynamical dark energy models in which the cosmological constant evolves from negative values in the early Universe to a positive value at low redshifts. This framework includes a generalised ladder-step evolution, as well as smooth-transition scenarios, providing a unified description of sign-changing cosmological constants. We analyse the theoretical construction and background dynamics of these models using cosmographic diagnostics. Extending this study to the linear perturbation regime, we solve the perturbation equations from the radiation-dominated era with adiabatic initial conditions. We examine the evolution of the matter density contrast, gravitational potential, and the $fσ_8$ observable. Our results are compared against the standard $Λ$CDM model and confronted with current observational data, illustrating the phenomenological viability of sign-changing dark energy models and revealing distinctive imprints on cosmic structure formation arising from the transition of the cosmological constant.

Cosmological perturbations for smooth sign-switching dark energy models

In this work, we carry out a comprehensive perturbative analysis of four cosmological models featuring a sign-switching cosmological constant. Among these, we include the well-known $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM model, characterised by an abrupt transition from a negative to a positive cosmological constant. We also consider the L$Λ$CDM model, which exhibits a generalised ladder-step evolution, as well as the SSCDM and ECDM models, both of which undergo a smooth sign change at comparable redshifts. We solve the linear cosmological perturbation equations from the radiation-dominated era, imposing initial adiabatic conditions for matter and radiation, for modes well outside the Hubble radius in the early Universe. We analyse the behaviour of the matter density contrast, the gravitational potential, the linear growth rate, the matter power spectrum, and the $fσ_8$ evolution . These results are contrasted with predictions from the standard $Λ$CDM model and are confronted with observational data.

Cosmographic analysis of sign-switching dark energy

Inspired by the well-studied $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM model, we propose and investigate a class of dynamical dark energy models that evolve from a negative cosmological constant, transitioning to a positive value at low redshifts. Specifically, we introduce a dark energy framework based on a generalised ladder-step function for the cosmological constant. Furthermore, we present two additional models in which the cosmological constant undergoes a smooth sign change at a specified redshift. We provide a detailed discussion of the construction and theoretical properties of these models, analysing their background cosmological evolution using a cosmographic approach and the statefinder hierarchy parameters. Our results are compared with those obtained for the standard $Λ$CDM and $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM models. We also perform a careful analysis of the types of singularities that may arise in these models due to a sign change in the cosmological constant. Notably, we show that a continuous sign change removes the sudden singularity present in the $Λ_{\rm s}$CDM model, replacing it with a milder $w$-singularity.
