Pseudoreal AMSB: Troubling Tensions with Tumbling

I analyze the pseudoreal confining $\mathcal{N}=1$ SUSY gauge theories deformed by anomaly mediated SUSY breaking (AMSB). Taking the conjecture that the AMSB and non-SUSY limits are in the same universality class, I find broadly that the non-SUSY confining pseudoreal gauge theories of this class have no massless vectors in their spectra, and that all but one are fully gapped. This contradicts recent expectations from tumbling. I explore whether or not non-standard tumbling could reconcile the two pictures, and find that it would require condensation in repulsive channels in three of the cases, and that in one case it would require condensation in a higher-order channel. I briefly comment on the additional theories that may be in the conformal window, and find that their SUSY versions are consistent with flowing to superconformal fixed points.

AMSB in $Sp(N_c)$ Gauge Theories

We present a careful study of the chiral symmetry breaking minima and other potential minima in supersymmetric symplectic QCD ($Sp(N_c)$ with $N_f$ flavors) perturbed by Anomaly Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking (AMSB). Although the case of $N_f = N_c +1$ requires particular care due to the inherently strongly coupled nature of the quantum modified moduli space, we are able to show that all $Sp(N_c)$ theories to which AMSB can be applied ($N_f < 3(N_c + 1)$) possess stable chiral symmetry breaking minima, which are plausibly continuously connected to the vacua of QCD-like $Sp(N_c)$ theories for large SUSY breaking, and are protected from runaways to incalculable minima.

Observing Leptogenesis in Action with Gravitational Waves

Leptogenesis is arguably the best motivated theory of baryogenesis given the discovery of finite neutrino masses, yet its experimental test is elusive given its high energy scale. We discuss gravitational waves (GWs) produced via graviton bremsstrahlung in right-handed neutrino decays during leptogenesis. The presence of right-handed neutrinos in the early universe can lead to a period of early matter domination. In this context, the resultant GW spectrum scales quadratically with the right-handed neutrino mass, while its peak frequency scales inversely with the Yukawa coupling. Detecting such a spectrum would provide strong evidence for leptogenesis and the existence of heavy right-handed neutrinos. We also discuss how the GW spectrum emitted from the thermal plasma is altered by an era of early matter domination. We show that it can mimic the effects of additional relativistic degrees of freedom and a higher reheating temperature, and that information from the graviton bremsstrahlung GW spectrum can break this degeneracy.

Two Higgs Doublet Solutions to the Strong CP Problem

We solve the strong CP problem in a broad class of two Higgs doublet theories that will be probed at the Large Hadron Collider and at future colliders. These theories feature CP and Abelian flavor symmetries, both broken softly in the scalar potential, that yield realistic quark masses and mixings. The flavor symmetry charges are chosen so that $\bar{\theta}=0$ at tree level for all values of the Yukawa and quartic couplings of the theory. We prove that in all such theories the 1-loop contribution to $\bar{\theta}$ also vanishes, independently of the mass scale of the second Higgs doublet. We study two illustrative models with flavor group $\mathbb{Z}_3$. The direct contributions to the neutron electric dipole moment are negligible in both models. While the 2-loop contribution to $\bar{\theta}$ is less than $10^{-12}$ in one model, it can be as large as $10^{-10}$ in the other, yielding the prospect of a signal in planned experiments. Even with Abelian flavor symmetries, CP violation in neutral kaon mixing is generally expected to yield naturalness bounds on the masses of additional Higgs doublets of order 20 TeV. We prove that for all models in our class, where the flavor symmetry forces $\bar{\theta}$ to vanish at tree-level, the flavor-changing neutral currents are CP-conserving, yielding model-dependent bounds from neutral meson mixing near 1 TeV. Mixing of the two CP-even scalars gives corrections to the couplings of the 125 GeV Higgs state to $\bar{t}t, \bar{b}b, \bar{c}c, \bar{\tau}\tau$ and $\bar{\mu} \mu$, giving possible signals at high luminosity runs at LHC and at future colliders. Furthermore, distinctive correlations between corrections in the various channels can probe the underlying flavor symmetry.

Near-SUSY to Non-SUSY Crossover

Gauge theories can be solved exactly slightly away from the supersymmetric (SUSY) limit softly broken by anomaly mediation when the size of SUSY breaking is much smaller than the dynamical scale ($m \ll \Lambda$). We show empirical evidence that the near-SUSY limit is continuously connected to the non-SUSY limit ($m \gg \Lambda$) in $\mathrm{SU}(N_c)$ gauge theories with $N_f$ quarks in the fundamental representation. The evidence includes the behavior of quark bi-linear condensate and gluon condensates, light hadron spectra, and consistency with the large $N_c$ limit. In addition, we present new predictions when $N_f/N_c \gtrsim O(1)$.

Strong CP and Flavor in Multi-Higgs Theories

We introduce a class of multi-Higgs doublet extensions of the Standard Model that solves the strong CP problem with profound consequences for the flavor sector. The Yukawa matrices are constrained to have many zero entries by a "Higgs-Flavor" symmetry, $G_{\rm HF}$, that acts on Higgs and quark fields. The violation of both CP and $G_{\rm HF}$ occurs in the Higgs mass matrix so that, for certain choices of $G_{\rm HF}$ charges, the strong CP parameter $\bar{\theta}$ is zero at tree-level. Radiative corrections to $\bar{\theta}$ are computed in this class of theories. They vanish in realistic two-Higgs doublet models with $G_{\rm HF} = \mathbb{Z}_3$. We also construct realistic three-Higgs models with $G_{\rm HF} = \rm U(1)$, where the one-loop results for $\bar{\theta}$ are model-dependent. Requiring $\bar{\theta}< 10^{-10}$ has important implications for the flavor problem by constraining the Yukawa coupling and Higgs mass matrices. Contributions to $\bar{\theta}$ from higher-dimension operators are computed at 1-loop and can also be sufficiently small, although the hierarchy problem of this class of theories is worse than in the Standard Model.

A Guide to AMSB QCD

We present a careful study of the chiral symmetry breaking minima and the baryonic directions in supersymmetric QCD ($SU(N_c)$ with $N_f$ flavors) perturbed by Anomaly Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking (AMSB). For the s-confining case of $N_f = N_c + 1$ and most of the free-magnetic phase ($N_f \leq 1.43 N_c$) we find that naive tree level baryonic runaways are stabilized by loop effects. Runaways are present, however, for the upper end of the free magnetic phase ($N_f \gtrsim 1.43 N_c$) and into conformal window, signaling the existence of incalculable minima at large field values of ${\cal O} (\Lambda)$. Nevertheless, the chiral symmetry breaking points are locally stable, and are expected to continuously connect to the vacua of QCD for large SUSY breaking. The case of $N_f = N_c$ requires particular care due to the inherently strongly coupled nature of the quantum modified moduli space. Due to the incalculability of critical K\"ahler potential terms, the stability of the chiral symmetry breaking point along baryonic directions cannot be determined for $N_f=N_c$. With the exception of this case, all theories to which AMSB can be applied ($N_f < 3 N_c$) possess stable chiral symmetry breaking minima, and all theories with $N_f \lesssim 1.43 N_c$ (aside from $N_f = N_f$) are protected from runaways to incalculable minima.

Broken Conformal Window

We show that near the edges of the conformal window of supersymmetric $SU(N_c)$ QCD, perturbed by Anomaly Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking (AMSB), chiral symmetry can be broken depending on the initial conditions of the RG flow. We do so by perturbatively expanding around Banks--Zaks fixed points and taking advantage of Seiberg duality. Interpolating between the edges of the conformal window, we predict that non-supersymmetric QCD breaks chiral symmetry up to $N_f \leq 3N_c - 1$, while we cannot say anything definitive for $N_f \geq 3N_c$ at this moment.

Non-perturbative Effects and Unparticle Physics in Generalized Schwinger Models

We analyze generalizations of the Schwinger model with more massless fermions and more vector fields. We focus on models with the gauge structure of ``diagonal color $SU(n)$'' but unlike previous investigators, we do not assume that all the gauge boson masses are the same. Unlike the Schwinger model, these are Banks-Zaks models with conformal sectors that survive at long distances. In addition to local operators that go to ``unparticle operators'' with non-zero anomalous dimensions at long distances, they contain local operators like the $\bar\psi_L\psi_R$ operator in the Schwinger model which go to constants at long distances. These operators have calculable vacuum expectation values (up to phases). Cluster decomposition applied to correlation functions involving these operators yields nontrivial and calculable non-perturbative constraints on correlation functions. One consequence is ``conformal coalescence'' in which linear combinations of short distance operators disappear from the long-distance theory, leaving only one kind of unparticle stuff in the low-energy theory. We believe that our detailed analysis of diagonal color $SU(n)$ paints an appealing picture of unparticle operators as the result of an incomplete binding of the massless fermions. We complete the picture (and the binding) by analyzing the diagonal color $U(n)$ model with a very small $U(1)$ coupling and thus a gauge boson with a dynamical mass much smaller than the other masses in the model. This model has a mass gap and we can see explicitly the transition from free-fermion behavior at short distances to unparticle physics at intermediate distances to the physics of massive particles at long distances.
