On the three-point functions in timelike N=1 Liouville CFT

We use analytic (super-)conformal bootstrap methods to derive explicit expressions for the structure constants of N=1 Liouville CFT in the `timelike' regime of the superconformal central charge. The obtained expressions take the form of inverses of the appropriate spacelike counterparts, which we explain concretely by elucidating the analytic properties of the corresponding shift relations in the NS- and R-sectors for the normalization-independent bootstrap data on the sphere. In a particular normalization, the timelike structure constants are shown to agree with the OPE coefficients of N=1 Minimal Models when specified at degenerate values of the momenta, exactly as in the non-supersymmetric case. We discuss possible applications of our results, with emphasis on the construction of the N=1 supersymmetric analog of the Virasoro Minimal String.

Toward the Structure Constants of $\mathcal{N}=2$ Liouville Theory

We discuss the structure constants of spacelike $\mathcal{N}=2$ Liouville theory on the two-sphere. Due to the absence of a particular $b \leftrightarrow b^{-1}$ self-dual symmetry, where $b$ is the theory's coupling, the standard analytic bootstrap toolkit that was used to solve the bosonic and $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories cannot be implemented in a straightforward way. Our approach, instead, relies on the fact that $\mathcal{N}=2$ Liouville theory is dual by mirror symmetry to the $\mathrm{SL}(2)_k/\mathrm{U}(1)$ supercoset, whose target space is the $2$d fermionic black hole. Leveraging this duality, we obtain explicit expressions for the winding number preserving and violating structure constants on the supercoset side, and test them on the Liouville side through a semiclassical analysis finding agreement up to one-loop order. We also discuss the chiral rings of the theory and evaluate correlators of $\frac 12$-BPS operators.

dS$^4$ Metamorphosis

We study the Euclidean path integral of higher spin gravity on $S^4$. Based on a one-loop analysis, we are led to a gluing formula expressing the $S^4$ path integral in terms of an underlying $S^3$ path integral. We view the three-sphere as a boundary hypersurface splitting the four-sphere into two halves. For a higher spin spectrum containing even spins only, the resulting boundary theory living on the $S^3$ cut is the $\mathrm{Sp}(N)$ invariant sector of $N\in \mathbb{Z}^+$ anti-commuting, conformally coupled free scalars, with conformal higher spin sources mediating the gluing. This boundary $\mathrm{Sp}(N)$ theory was previously shown to compute the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction at $\mathcal{I}^+$ in the higher spin dS$_4$/CFT$_3$ correspondence. In contrast to the infinite spatial volume of $\mathcal{I}^+$, here the conformal fields populate a finite size $S^3$ hypersurface of $S^4$. For theories with both bosonic and fermionic higher spin fields, the gluing formula is instead built from an $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal boundary field theory coupled to $U(N)$ invariant superconformal sources. Under this assumption, the leading contribution to the four-sphere partition function is $2^N$, and we observe exact cancellations at one-loop.

The complex Liouville string: the gravitational path integral

We give a rigorous definition of sine dilaton gravity in terms of the worldsheet theory of the complex Liouville string arXiv:2409.17246. The latter has a known exact solution that we leverage to explore the gravitational path integral of sine dilaton gravity - a quantum deformation of dS JT gravity that admits both AdS$_2$ and dS$_2$ vacua. We uncover that the gravitational path integral receives contributions from new saddles describing transitions between vacua in a third-quantized picture. We also discuss the sphere and disk partition function in this context and contrast our findings with other recent work on this theory.

The two-sphere partition function in two-dimensional quantum gravity

We study the Euclidean path integral of two-dimensional quantum gravity with positive cosmological constant coupled to conformal matter with large and positive central charge. The problem is considered in a semiclassical expansion about a round two-sphere saddle. We work in the Weyl gauge whereby the computation reduces to that for a (timelike) Liouville theory. We present results up to two-loops, including a discussion of contributions stemming from the gauge fixing procedure. We exhibit cancelations of ultraviolet divergences and provide a path integral computation of the central charge for timelike Liouville theory. Combining our analysis with insights from the DOZZ formula we are led to a proposal for an all orders result for the two-dimensional gravitational partition function on the two-sphere.

dS$_2$ Supergravity

We construct two-dimensional supergravity theories endowed with a positive cosmological constant, that admit de Sitter vacua. We consider the cases of $\mathcal{N}=1$ as well as $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, and couple the supergravity to a superconformal field theory with the same amount of supersymmetry. Upon fixing a supersymmetric extension of the Weyl gauge, the theories are captured, at the quantum level, by supersymmetric extensions of timelike Liouville theory with $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry respectively. The theories exhibit good ultraviolet properties and are amenable to a variety of techniques such as systematic loop expansions and, in the $\mathcal{N}=2$ case, supersymmetric localization. Our constructions offer a novel path toward a precise treatment of the Euclidean gravitational path integral for de Sitter, and in turn, the Gibbons-Hawking entropy of the de Sitter horizon. We argue that the supersymmetric localization method applied to the $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory must receive contributions from boundary terms in configuration space. We also discuss how these theories overcome several obstructions that appear upon combining de Sitter space with supersymmetry.

Remarks on 2D quantum cosmology

We consider two-dimensional quantum gravity endowed with a positive cosmological constant and coupled to a conformal field theory of large and positive central charge. We study cosmological properties at the classical and quantum level. We provide a complete ADM analysis of the classical phase space, revealing a family of either bouncing or big bang/crunch type cosmologies. At the quantum level, we solve the Wheeler-DeWitt equation exactly. In the semiclassical limit, we link the Wheeler-DeWitt state space to the classical phase space. Wavefunctionals of the Hartle-Hawking and Vilenkin type are identified, and we uncover a quantum version of the bouncing spacetime. We retrieve the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction from the disk path integral of timelike Liouville theory. To do so, we must select a particular contour in the space of complexified fields. The quantum information content of the big bang cosmology is discussed, and contrasted with the de Sitter horizon entropy as computed by a gravitational path integral over the two-sphere.

The complex Liouville string

We introduce the complex Liouville string, a solvable string theory defined by coupling two Liouville theories with complex conjugate central charges $c \in 13+i \mathbb{R}$ on the worldsheet. We compute its amplitudes from first principles and establish a duality with a double-scaled two-matrix integral. We also analyze general worldsheet boundaries and non-perturbative effects in the genus expansion. By expressing the complex Liouville string as a 2d dilaton gravity theory with a sine potential, we show that it admits both AdS$_2$ and dS$_2$ vacua.

The complex Liouville string: the matrix integral

We propose a duality between the complex Liouville string and a two-matrix integral. The complex Liouville string is defined by coupling two Liouville theories with complex central charges $c = 13 \pm i λ$ on the worldsheet. The matrix integral is characterized by its spectral curve which allows us to compute the perturbative string amplitudes recursively via topological recursion. This duality constitutes a controllable instance of holographic duality. The leverage on the theory is provided by the rich analytic structure of the string amplitudes that we discussed in arXiv:2409.18759 and allows us to perform numerous tests on the duality.

The complex Liouville string: the worldsheet

We introduce a new two-dimensional string theory defined by coupling two copies of Liouville CFT with complex central charge $c=13\pm i λ$ on the worldsheet. This string theory defines a novel, consistent and controllable model of two-dimensional quantum gravity. We use the exact solution of the worldsheet theory to derive stringent constraints on the analytic structure of the string amplitudes as a function of the vertex operator momenta. Together with other worldsheet constraints, this allows us to completely pin down the string amplitudes without explicitly computing the moduli space integrals. We focus on the case of the sphere four-point amplitude and torus one-point amplitude as worked examples. This is the first in a series of papers on the complex Liouville string: three subsequent papers will elucidate the holographic duality with a two-matrix integral, discuss worldsheet boundaries and non-perturbative effects, and connect the theory to de Sitter quantum gravity.

The complex Liouville string: worldsheet boundaries and non-perturbative effects

We investigate general observables of the complex Liouville string with worldsheet boundaries. We develop a universal formalism that reduces such observables to ordinary closed string amplitudes without boundaries, applicable to any worldsheet string theory, but particularly simple in the context of 2d or minimal string theories. We apply this formalism to the duality of the complex Liouville string with the matrix integral proposed in arXiv:2409.18759 and arXiv:2410.07345 and showcase the formalism by finding appropriate boundary conditions for various matrix model quantities of interest, such as the resolvent or the partition function. We also apply this formalism towards the computation of non-perturbative effects on the worldsheet mediated by ZZ-instantons. These are known to be plagued by extra subtleties which need input from string field theory to resolve. These computations probe and uncover the duality between the complex Liouville string and the matrix model at the non-perturbative level.

A microscopic realization of dS$_3$

We propose a precise duality between pure de Sitter quantum gravity in 2+1 dimensions and a double-scaled matrix integral. This duality unfolds in two distinct aspects. First, by carefully quantizing the gravitational phase space, we arrive at a novel proposal for the quantum state of the universe at future infinity. We compute cosmological correlators of massive particles in the universe specified by this wavefunction. Integrating these correlators over the metric at future infinity yields gauge-invariant observables, which are identified with the string amplitudes of the complex Liouville string arXiv:2409.17246. This establishes a direct connection between integrated cosmological correlators and the resolvents of the matrix integral dual to the complex Liouville string, thereby demonstrating one aspect of the dS$_3$/matrix integral duality. The second aspect concerns the cosmological horizon of the dS static patch and the Gibbons-Hawking entropy it is conjectured to encode. We show that this entropy can be reproduced exactly by counting the entries of the matrix.

The Virasoro Minimal String

We introduce a critical string theory in two dimensions and demonstrate that this theory, viewed as two-dimensional quantum gravity on the worldsheet, is equivalent to a double-scaled matrix integral. The worldsheet theory consists of Liouville CFT with central charge $c\geq 25$ coupled to timelike Liouville CFT with central charge $26-c$. The double-scaled matrix integral has as its leading density of states the universal Cardy density of primaries in a two-dimensional CFT, thus motivating the name Virasoro minimal string. The duality holds for any value of the continuous parameter $c$ and reduces to the JT gravity/matrix integral duality in the large central charge limit. It thus provides a precise stringy realization of JT gravity. The main observables of the Virasoro minimal string are quantum analogues of the Weil-Petersson volumes, which are computed as absolutely convergent integrals of worldsheet CFT correlators over the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. By exploiting a relation of the Virasoro minimal string to three-dimensional gravity and intersection theory on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, we are able to give a direct derivation of the duality. We provide many checks, such as explicit numerical - and in special cases, analytic - integration of string diagrams, the identification of the CFT boundary conditions with asymptotic boundaries of the two-dimensional spacetime, and the matching between the leading non-perturbative corrections of the worldsheet theory and the matrix integral. As a byproduct, we discover natural conformal boundary conditions for timelike Liouville CFT.

Near-Extremal Limits of Warped CFTs

Warped conformal field theories (WCFTs) are two-dimensional non-relativistic systems, with a chiral scaling and shift symmetry. We present a detailed derivation of the near-extremal limit for their torus partition function. This limit requires large values of the central charge, and is only consistent for non-unitary WCFT. We compare our analysis with previous studies of WCFT and its relation to a one-dimensional warped-Schwarzian theory. We discuss different ensembles of warped CFTs and contrast our results with analogous limits in two-dimensional CFTs.

Near-Extremal Limits of Warped Black Holes

A holographic description of three-dimensional warped black holes suffers from ambiguities due to a seemingly harmless choice of coordinate system. This gives rise to the notion of ensembles in warped black holes, and we focus on two of them: the canonical and quadratic ensemble. Our aim is to quantify the imprint of these ensembles in the near-extremal limit of a warped black hole. To this end, for each ensemble, we explore the thermodynamic response and evaluate greybody factors. We also set-up a holographic dictionary in their near-AdS$_2$ region, and decode aspects of the dual near-CFT$_1$. This gives us different perspectives of the black hole that we can contrast and compare. On the one hand, we find perfect agreement between the near-extremal limit of the canonical ensemble warped black holes, their near-AdS$_2$ effective analysis, and a warped conformal field theory description. On the other, we are led to rule out the quadratic ensemble due to inconsistencies at the quantum level with the near-AdS$_2$ effective description.

Determinants in self-dual N=4 SYM and twistor space

We consider correlation functions of supersymmetrized determinant operators in self-dual super Yang-Mills (SYM). These provide a generating function for correlators of arbitrary single-trace half-BPS operators, including, for appropriate Grassmann components, the so-called loop integrand of the non-self-dual theory. We introduce a novel twistor space representation for determinant operators which makes contact with the recently studied $m=2$ amplituhedron. By using matrix duality we rewrite the $n$-point determinant correlator as a $n\times n$ matrix integral where the gauge group rank $N_c$ is turned into a coupling. The correlators are rational functions whose denominators, in the planar limit, contain only ten-dimensional distances. Using this formulation, we verify a recent conjecture regarding the ten-dimensional symmetry of the components with maximal Grassmann degree and we obtain new formulas for correlators of Grassmann degree four.

Finite Features of Quantum De Sitter Space

We consider degrees of freedom for a quantum de Sitter spacetime. The problem is studied from both a Lorentzian and a Euclidean perspective. From a Lorentzian perspective, we compute dynamical properties of the static patch de Sitter horizon. These are compared to dynamical features of black holes. We point out differences suggestive of non-standard thermal behaviour for the de Sitter horizon. We establish that geometries interpolating between an asymptotically AdS$_2 \times S^2$ space and a dS$_4$ interior are compatible with the null energy condition, albeit with a non-standard decreasing radial size of $S^2$. The putative holographic dual of an asymptotic AdS$_2$ spacetime is comprised of a finite number of degrees of freedom. From a Euclidean perspective we consider the gravitational path integral for fields over compact manifolds. In two-dimensions, we review Polchinski's BRST localisation of Liouville theory and propose a supersymmetric extension of timelike Liouville theory which exhibits supersymmetric localisation. We speculate that localisation of the Euclidean gravitational path integral is a reflection of a finite number of degrees of freedom in a quantum de Sitter universe.

The two-sphere partition function from timelike Liouville theory at three-loop order

While the Euclidean two-dimensional gravitational path integral is in general highly fluctuating, it admits a semiclassical two-sphere saddle if coupled to a matter CFT with large and positive central charge. In Weyl gauge this gravity theory is known as timelike Liouville theory, and is conjectured to be a non-unitary two-dimensional CFT. We explore the semiclassical limit of timelike Liouville theory by calculating the two-sphere partition function from the perspective of the path integral to three-loop order, extending the work in 2106.01665. We also compare our result to the conjectured all-loop sphere partition function obtained from the DOZZ formula. Since the two-sphere is the geometry of Euclidean two-dimensional de Sitter space our discussion is tied to the conjecture of Gibbons-Hawking, according to which the dS entropy is encoded in the Euclidean gravitational path integral over compact manifolds.
