Single-Component Privacy Guarantees in Helper Data Systems and Sparse Coding with Ambiguation

We investigate the privacy of two approaches to (biometric) template protection: Helper Data Systems and Sparse Ternary Coding with Ambiguization. In particular, we focus on a privacy property that is often overlooked, namely how much leakage exists about one specific binary property of one component of the feature vector. This property is e.g. the sign or an indicator that a threshold is exceeded. We provide evidence that both approaches are able to protect such sensitive binary variables, and discuss how system parameters need to be set.

Reconstruction of Privacy-Sensitive Data from Protected Templates

In this paper, we address the problem of data reconstruction from privacy-protected templates, based on recent concept of sparse ternary coding with ambiguization (STCA). The STCA is a generalization of randomization techniques which includes random projections, lossy quantization, and addition of ambiguization noise to satisfy the privacy-utility trade-off requirements. The theoretical privacy-preserving properties of STCA have been validated on synthetic data. However, the applicability of STCA to real data and potential threats linked to reconstruction based on recent deep reconstruction algorithms are still open problems. Our results demonstrate that STCA still achieves the claimed theoretical performance when facing deep reconstruction attacks for the synthetic i.i.d. data, while for real images special measures are required to guarantee proper protection of the templates.

Aggregation and Embedding for Group Membership Verification

This paper proposes a group membership verification protocol preventing the curious but honest server from reconstructing the enrolled signatures and inferring the identity of querying clients. The protocol quantizes the signatures into discrete embeddings, making reconstruction difficult. It also aggregates multiple embeddings into representative values, impeding identification. Theoretical and experimental results show the trade-off between the security and the error rates.

Clustering with Jointly Learned Nonlinear Transforms Over Discriminating Min-Max Similarity/Dissimilarity Assignment

This paper presents a novel clustering concept that is based on jointly learned nonlinear transforms (NTs) with priors on the information loss and the discrimination. We introduce a clustering principle that is based on evaluation of a parametric min-max measure for the discriminative prior. The decomposition of the prior measure allows to break down the assignment into two steps. In the first step, we apply NTs to a data point in order to produce candidate NT representations. In the second step, we preform the actual assignment by evaluating the parametric measure over the candidate NT representations. Numerical experiments on image clustering task validate the potential of the proposed approach. The evaluation shows advantages in comparison to the state-of-the-art clustering methods.

Privacy-Preserving Identification via Layered Sparse Code Design: Distributed Servers and Multiple Access Authorization

We propose a new computationally efficient privacy-preserving identification framework based on layered sparse coding. The key idea of the proposed framework is a sparsifying transform learning with ambiguization, which consists of a trained linear map, a component-wise nonlinearity and a privacy amplification. We introduce a practical identification framework, which consists of two phases: public and private identification. The public untrusted server provides the fast search service based on the sparse privacy protected codebook stored at its side. The private trusted server or the local client application performs the refined accurate similarity search using the results of the public search and the layered sparse codebooks stored at its side. The private search is performed in the decoded domain and also the accuracy of private search is chosen based on the authorization level of the client. The efficiency of the proposed method is in computational complexity of encoding, decoding, "encryption" (ambiguization) and "decryption" (purification) as well as storage complexity of the codebooks.

Network Learning with Local Propagation

This paper presents a locally decoupled network parameter learning with local propagation. Three elements are taken into account: (i) sets of nonlinear transforms that describe the representations at all nodes, (ii) a local objective at each node related to the corresponding local representation goal, and (iii) a local propagation model that relates the nonlinear error vectors at each node with the goal error vectors from the directly connected nodes. The modeling concepts (i), (ii) and (iii) offer several advantages, including (a) a unified learning principle for any network that is represented as a graph, (b) understanding and interpretation of the local and the global learning dynamics, (c) decoupled and parallel parameter learning, (d) a possibility for learning in infinitely long, multi-path and multi-goal networks. Numerical experiments validate the potential of the learning principle. The preliminary results show advantages in comparison to the state-of-the-art methods, w.r.t. the learning time and the network size while having comparable recognition accuracy.

Privacy Preserving Identification Using Sparse Approximation with Ambiguization

In this paper, we consider a privacy preserving encoding framework for identification applications covering biometrics, physical object security and the Internet of Things (IoT). The proposed framework is based on a sparsifying transform, which consists of a trained linear map, an element-wise nonlinearity, and privacy amplification. The sparsifying transform and privacy amplification are not symmetric for the data owner and data user. We demonstrate that the proposed approach is closely related to sparse ternary codes (STC), a recent information-theoretic concept proposed for fast approximate nearest neighbor (ANN) search in high dimensional feature spaces that being machine learning in nature also offers significant benefits in comparison to sparse approximation and binary embedding approaches. We demonstrate that the privacy of the database outsourced to a server as well as the privacy of the data user are preserved at a low computational cost, storage and communication burdens.

Joint Source-Channel Coding for Broadcast Channel with Cooperating Receivers

It is known that, as opposed to point-to-point channel, separate source and channel coding is not optimal in general for sending correlated sources over multiuser channels. In some works joint source-channel coding has been investigated for some certain multiuser channels; i.g., multiple access channel (MAC) and broadcast channel (BC). In this paper, we obtain a sufficient condition for transmitting arbitrarily correlated sources over a discrete memoryless BC with cooperating receivers, where the receivers are allowed to exchange messages via a pair of noisy cooperative links. It is seen that our results is a general form of previous ones and includes them as its special cases.

Coverage Region Analysis for MIMO Amplify-and-Forward Relay Channel with the Source to Destination Link

In this paper we study and analyze coverage region for half-duplex multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay channel with amplify-and-forward (AF) strategy at the relay station. By assuming mixed Rayleigh and Rician fading channels with two different relay station situations, we consider the objective of maximizing coverage region for a given transmission rate and find the optimal relay location in the sense of maximizing coverage region. using Monte Carlo simulations, the coverage region and capacity bounds are shown for different fading cases and different relay station locations. Finally, we compare our results with previous ones obtained for decode-and-forward (DF) MIMO relay channel.

A Generalized Write Channel Model for Bit-Patterned Media Recording

In this paper, we propose a generalized write channel model for bit-patterned media recording by considering all sources of errors causing some extra disturbances during write process, in addition to data dependent write synchronization errors. We investigate information-theoretic bounds for this new model according to various input distributions and also compare it numerically to the last proposed model.

Analysis of Coverage Region for MIMO Relay Network with Multiple Cooperative DF-Relays

We study and analyze coverage region in MIMO communication systems for a multiple-relay network with decode-and-forward (DF) strategy at the relays. Assuming that there is a line-of-sight (LOS) propagation environment for source-relay channels and channel state information is available at receivers (CSIR), we consider the objective of maximizing coverage region for a given transmission rate and show numerically the significant effect of propagation environment on capacity bounds, optimal relay location and coverage region. Also, we study the situation in which two adjacent relays cooperate in transmission signals to the destination and show analytically that the coverage region is extended compared to noncooperative scenario.
