Nodal Line Topological Superfluid and Multiply Protected Majorana Fermi Arc in a Three-Dimensional Time-Reversal-Invariant Superfluid Model

We theoretically study a time-reversal-invariant three-dimensional superfluid model by stacking in $z$ direction identical bilayer models with intralayer spin-orbit coupling and contrary Zeeman energy splitting for different layer, which has been suggested recently to realize two-dimensional time-reversal-invariant topological superfluid. We find that this model shows two kinds of topologically nontrivial phases: gapless phases with nodal lines in pairs protected by chiral symmetry and a gapped phase, both of which support time-reversal-invariant Majorana Fermi arc (MFA) on the $yz$ and $xz$ side surface. These MFA abide by time-reversal and particle-hole symmetries and are topologically protected by the winding numbers in mirror subspaces and $Z_2$ numbers of two-dimensional DIII class topological superfluid, different from MFA in the time-reversal broken Weyl superfluid protected by nonzero Chern number. This important observation means that MFA in our model represents a new type of topological state not explored previously. The Zeeman field configuration in our model is relevant to antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, thus our work stimulates the further studies on superconducting effects in the realistic antiferromagnetic topological insulator.

Chiral Majorana Edge Modes and Vortex Majorana Zero Modes in Superconducting Antiferromagnetic Topological Insulator

The antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFTI) is topologically protected by the combined time-reversal and translational symmetry $\mathcal{T}_c$. In this paper we investigate the effects of the $s$-wave superconducting pairings on the multilayers of AFTI, which breaks $\mathcal{T}_c$ symmetry and can realize quantum anomalous Hall insulator with unit Chern number. For the weakly coupled pairings, the system corresponds to the topological superconductor (TSC) with the Chern number $C=\pm 2$. We answer the following questions whether the local Chern numbers and chiral Majorana edge modes of such a TSC distribute around the surface layers. By the numerical calculations based on a theoretic model of AFTI, we find that when the local Chern numbers are always dominated by the surface layers, the wavefunctions of chiral Majorana edge modes must not localize on the surface layers and show a smooth crossover from spatially occupying all layers to only distributing near the surface layers, similar to the hinge states in a three dimensional second-order topological phases. The latter phase can be distinguished from the former phase by the measurements of the local density of state. In addition we also study the superconducting vortex phase transition in this system and find that the exchange field in the AFTI not only enlarges the phase space of topological vortex phase but also enhances its topological stability. These conclusions will stimulate the investigations on superconducting effects of AFTI and drive the studies on chiral Majorana edge modes and vortex Majorana zero modes into a new era.

Topological superfluids in two-dimensional Fermi gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling

The realization of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in ultracold atoms has triggered an intensive exploring of topological superfluids in the degenerate Fermi gases based on mean-field theory, which has not yet been reported in experiments. Here, we demonstrate the topological phase transitions in the system via the numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo method. Without prior assumptions, our unbiased real-space calculation shows that spin-orbit coupling can stabilize an unconventional pairing in the weak SOC regime, in which the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing coexists with the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer pairing. Furthermore, we use the jumps in the spin polarization at the time-reversal invariant momenta to qualify the topological phase transition, where we find the critical exponent deviated from the mean-field theory. Our results pave the way for the searching of unconventional pairing and topological superfluids with degenerate Fermi gases.

Dynamical instability towards finite-momentum pairing in quenched BCS superconducting phases

In this work we numerically investigate the fate of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairing in the presence of quenched phase under Peierls substitution using time-dependent real space and momentum space Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation methods and Anderson pseudospin representation method. This kind of phase imprint can be realized by modulating electric field in ultracold atoms and illumining of THz optical pump pulse in solids with conventional and unconventional superconductors. In the case of weak phase imprint, the BCS pairing is stable; while in the strong phase imprint, instability towards finite-momentum pairing is allowed, in which the real space and momentum space methods yield different results. In the pulsed gauge potential, we find that this instability will not happen even with much stronger vector potential. We also show that the uniform and staggered gauge potentials yield different behaviors. While the staggered potential induces transition from the BCS pairing to over-damped phase, the uniform gauge may enhance the pairing and will not induce to the over-damped phase. These result may shade light on the realization of finite momentum pairing, such as Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase with dynamical modulation.

Topological indexes in symmetry preserving dynamics

The quench dynamics of topological phases have received intensive investigations in recent years. In this work, we prove exactly that the topological invariants for both $\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ indexes are independent of time in symmetry preserving dynamics. We first reach this conclusion by a direct relation between the time derivative of Berry connection and the Hamiltonian energy based on the time dependent Hellman-Feynman theorem, with which we show exactly that the topological indexes for systems without and with time reversal symmetry are unchanged during evolution. In contrast, the geometry phase without symmetry protection in a closed parameter space can change dramtically with time, as revealed from the parameterized Landau-Zener model. Then we interpret this result by showing that the time dependent wave function is essentially the eigenvector of an auxiliary Hamiltonian, which has exactly the same spectra and symmetries as the original Hamiltonian. For this reason, the adiabatic evolution between the original and auxiliary Hamiltonian will not lead to gap closing and reopening, thus the topological indexes are independent of time. This result has generality and can be applied to models with other symmetries and dimensions, and may even be applied to gapless phases. Finally, possible ways to outreach this rigorous result are discussed.

Type-I and type-II topological nodal superconductors with $s$-wave interaction

Topological nodal superconductors are generally realized based on unconventional pairings. In this work, we propose a minimal model to realize these topological nodal phases with only $s$-wave interaction. In our model the linear and quadratic spin-orbit couplings along the two directions break the isotropy in momentum space and introduce effective unconventional pairings on the Fermi surface. This model may support different nodal superconducting phases characterized by either winding number in BDI class or Pfaffian in D class at the particle-hole invariant axes. In the vicinity of the nodal points the effective Hamiltonian can be described by either type-I or type-II Dirac equation; and the crossover between these two nodal points can be driven by external Zeeman fields. We show that these nodal phases are robust against weak disorders, thus are possible to be realized in experiments with real materials. The smoking-gun evidences to verify these phases based on scanning tunneling spectroscopy are also briefly discussed.

Topological superfluids with time-reversal symmetry from $s$-wave interaction in a bilayer system

Topological superconducting phases with time-reversal (TR) symmetry have been widely explored in recent years. However the involved unconventional pairings are generally implausible in realistic materials. Here we demonstrate via detailed self-consistent calculation that these topological phases with TR symmetry in DIII and BDI classes can be realized in a spin-orbit coupled bilayer system with only $s$-wave interaction. The bilayer freedom enables the definition of TR symmetry between the layers even in the presence of local Zeeman fields, which we propose to be realized using four laser beams. The gapped phase in DIII class is characterized by $\mathbb{Z}_2$, while all the gapless phases in these two classes are characterized by nontrivial winding numbers and are also manifested from the Majorana flat bands. We also unveil the intimate relation between TR symmetry and mirror symmetry due to phase locking effect between the two layers, which harbors the mirror symmetry protected topological phases. We finally demonstrate that these phases will not be spoiled by interlayer pairings.

Large Chern Number Topological Superfluids in Coupled Layer System

We investigate the topological phase transition with large Chern number in a coupled layer system. The topological transitions between different topological superfluids can be realized by controlling the binding energy, interlay tunneling and layer asymmetry {\it etc}. These topological phase transitions can be characterized by energy gap closing and reopening at the critical points at zero momentum, where the Pfaffian and Chern number undergo a discontinuous change. The bulk-edge correspondence ensures that the number of edge modes exactly equals the Chern number. However all these edge modes localized at the same edge have the same chirality and propagate along the same direction. These topological phases can be detected by spin texture at or near zero momentum, which changes discontinuously across the phase transition point due to band inversion. This model can be easily generalized to multilayer system in which the Chern number equals any positive integer --- similar to that in integer quantum Hall effect --- can be realized. This work paves a new way in the realization of topological superfluids with large Chern number.

Phase Diagram of a Spin-Orbit Coupled Fermi Gases in a Bilayer Optical Lattice

We investigate the stability of helical superfluid phase in a spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas loaded in a bilayer optical lattice. The phase diagram of the system is constructed in the mean field framework. We investigate the topological properties of the superfluid phases by a nontrivial application of the Fermi surface topological invariant to our time-reversal invariant system with degeneracies on the Fermi surface. We find that there is a first-order phase boundary in the phase diagram of half filling case and the superfluid phases are all topological trivial. The superfluid phase is topological nontrivial when the filling fraction deviates from the half filling. In the topological nontrivial superfluid phase, a full pairing gap exists in the bulk and gapless helical Majorana edge states exist at the boundary.

Excitation Spectrum and Momentum Distribution of Bose-Hubbard Model with On-site Two- and Three-body Interaction

An effective action for Bose-Hubbard model with two- and three-body on-site interaction in a square optical lattice is derived in the frame of a strong-coupling approach developed by Sengupta and Dupuis. From this effective action, superfluid-Mott insulator (MI) phase transition, excitation spectrum and momentum distribution for two phases are calculated by taking into account Gaussian fluctuation about the saddle-point approximation. In addition the effects of three-body interaction are also discussed.

A New Non-Abelian Topological Phase of Cold Fermi Gases in Anisotropic and Spin-Dependent Optical Lattices

To realize non-Abelian s-wave topological superfluid (TS) of cold Fermi gases, generally a Zeeman magnetic field larger than superfluid pairing gap is necessary. In this paper we find that using an anisotropic and spin-dependent optical lattice (ASDOL) to trap gases, a new non-Abelian TS phase appears, in contrast to an isotropic and spin-independent optical lattice. A characteristic of this new non-Abelian TS is that Zeeman magnetic field can be smaller than the superfluid pairing gap. By self-consistently solving pairing gap equation and considering the competition against normal state and phase separation, this new phase is also stable. Thus an ASDOL supplies a convenient route to realize TS. We also investigate edge states and the effects of a harmonic trap potential.

Topological superfluid of spinless Fermi gases in p-band honeycomb optical lattices with on-site rotation

In this paper, we put forward to another route realizing topological superfluid (TS). In contrast to conventional method, spin-orbit coupling and external magnetic field are not requisite. Introducing an experimentally feasible technique called on-site rotation (OSR) into p-band honeycomb optical lattices for spinless Fermi gases and considering CDW and pairing on the same footing, we investigate the effects of OSR on superfluidity. The results suggest that when OSR is beyond a critical value, where CDW vanishes, the system transits from a normal superfluid (NS) with zero TKNN number to TS labeled by a non-zero TKNN number. In addition, phase transitions between different TS are also possible.

Metal-Mott Insulator Transition and Spin Exchange of Two-Component Fermi Gas with Spin-Orbit Coupling in Two-Dimension Square Optical Lattices

Effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on metal-Mott insulator transition (MMIT) and spin exchange physics (SEP) of two-component Fermi gases in two-dimension half-filling square optical lattices are investigated. In the frame of Kotliar and Ruckenstein slave boson and the second order perturbation theory, the phase boundary of paramagnetic MMIT and spin exchange Hamiltonian are calculated. In addition by adopting two mean-field ansatzs including antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic and spiral phases, we find that SOC can drive a quantum phase transition from antiferromagnet to spiral phase.

Condensate Fraction and Pair Coherence Lengths of Two-Dimension Fermi Gases with Spin-Orbit Coupling

The effects of Rashba spin-orbit coupling on BCS-BEC crossover, the condensate fraction and pair coherence lengths for a two-component attractive Fermi gas in two dimension are studied. The results at $T=0K$ indicate that (1) when the strength of SOC is beyond a critical value, BCS-BEC crossover does not happen in a conventional sense; (2) SOC enhances the condensate fraction, but suppresses pair coherence lengths.

BCS-BEC Crossover in Mix-dimensional Fermi Gases

We investigate a mix-dimensional Fermi-Fermi mixture in which one species is confined in two-dimensional(2D) space while the other is free in three-dimensional space(3D). We determine the superfluid transition temperature $T_{c}$ for the entire BCS-BEC crossover including the important effects of noncondensed pairs. We find that the transition temperature reduces while the imbalance of mass is increased or lattice constant ($dz$) is reduced. In population imbalance case, the stability of superfluid is sharply destroyed by increasing the polarization.

Oscillation of Pauli Paramagnetism in Rotating Two-Component Fermionic Atom Gases

By rotating two-component fermionic atom gases in uniform magnetic field, a similar physical situation with de Haas-van Alphen effect is constructed. We calculate magnetic moment of the system and find that owing to an existence of effective magnetic field coming from the rotation, the magnetic moment also shows the oscillatory behavior about magnetic field, but it is completely different from the famous oscillation of de Haas-van Alphen effect. This distinction is due to that in the atomic gases the orbital motion of atom only couples to rotation and does not contribute to magnetic moment in the light of atomic charge neutrality.

Polaron Properties of an Impurity in Bose-Einstein-Condensation

In this paper we study an impurity in Bose-Einstein-Condensate system at $T=0K$ and suppose the contact forms for boson-boson and boson-impurity interactions. Using Bogoliubov theory and a further approximation corresponding to only think over the forward scattering of impurity by bosons, we derive a reduced Hamiltonian whose form is the same as the Fröhlich Hamiltonian for large polaron. By using Lee-Low-Pines (LLP) theory for large polaron, we obtain the effective mass of impurity, the phonon number carried by impurity and the energy related to the existence of impurity. In addition, we also discuss the valid range for forward-scattering approximation.

Finite Temperature Phase Diagram in Rotating Bosonic Optical Lattice

Finite temperature phase boundary between superfluid phase and normal state is analytically derived by studying the stability of normal state in rotating bosonic optical lattice. We also prove that the oscillation behavior of critical hopping matrix directly follows the upper boundary of Hofstadter butterfly as the function of effective magnetic field.
