The Prestige: Benchmarking Cognitive Visual Reasoning using Magic Tricks

We introduce The Prestige, a video understanding benchmark that probes cognitive visual reasoning through professional magic performances, where deliberate misdirection challenges models to track events and explain unexpected outcomes. The benchmark comprises open-ended questions ranging from temporal and causal understanding to robustness against adversarial questions. Evaluation of leading open-source and proprietary VLMs reveals a substantial gap between even the strongest model and human performance. We also find systematic discrepancies between human and automated grading and identify recurring model failure modes. Ablations further show that models can select correct multiple-choice answers even when they fail to generate correct explanations independently, motivating further investigations into question formats. Together, these findings highlight limitations in both VLM reasoning and its evaluation, underscoring the need for more reliable video understanding models and more rigorous benchmarks.

Retriever-Free Retrieval: Navigating Documents with Decision Models

While language models have become dramatically more capable, retrieval still largely relies on lexical matching or similarity in fixed embedding spaces. This creates a capability asymmetry: what the retriever fails to find, even the strongest generator cannot recover. We propose DecisionRAG, which brings the capabilities of pretrained language models to retrieval using decision models that jointly evaluate candidate branches in a single forward pass, without generating any tokens, and show that judging candidates in a shared context makes their relevance estimates comparable. Like a person browsing a library, DecisionRAG navigates the corpus's inherent structure from broad topics down to individual passages, deciding at each level which branches are worth exploring. Without task-specific training or a first-stage retriever, DecisionRAG outperforms dense retrieval with an 8B reranker by 13.8 R@1 points on MultiDoc2Dial and 17.4 Hit@1 points on Natural Questions. Across four benchmarks, including a corpus of 2.68 million Wikipedia paragraphs, retrieval takes just 0.7-1.8 seconds per query.

Dual Control of Linear Systems from Bilinear Observations with Belief Space Model Predictive Control

We study finite-horizon quadratic control of linear systems with bilinear observations, in which the control input affects not only the state dynamics but also the partial observations of the state. In this setting, the separation principle can fail because control inputs influence the future quality of state estimates. State estimation requires an input-dependent Kalman filter whose gain and error covariance evolve as functions of the control inputs. To address this challenge, we propose a belief-space model predictive control ($\texttt{B-MPC}$) method that plans directly over both the estimated state and its error covariance. In particular, $\texttt{B-MPC}$ plans with a deterministic surrogate of the belief evolution defined by the input-dependent Kalman filter. Through numerical experiments in two synthetic settings, we show that $\texttt{B-MPC}$ can outperform both the separation-principle controller and its MPC variant in favorable regimes, and that these gains are accompanied by lower estimation covariance and more uncertainty-aware action choices.
