Morphology transitions in three-dimensional domain growth with Gaussian random fields

We study the morphology of magnetic domain growth in disordered three dimensional magnets. The disordered magnetic material is described within the random-field Ising model with a Gaussian distribution of local fields with width $Δ$. Growth is driven by a uniform applied magnetic field, whose value is kept equal to the critical value $H_c(Δ)$ for the onset of steady motion. Two growth regimes are clearly identified. For low $Δ$ the growing domain is compact, with a self-affine external interface. For large $Δ$ a self-similar percolation-like morphology is obtained. A multi-critical point at $(Δ_c$, $H_c(Δ_c))$ separates the two types of growth. We extract the critical exponents near $Δ_c$ using finite-size scaling of different morphological attributes of the external domain interface. We conjecture that the critical disorder width also corresponds to a maximum in $H_c(Δ)$.

Chaos in one-dimensional lattices under intense laser fields

A model is investigated where a monochromatic, spatially homogeneous laser field interacts with an electron in a one-dimensional periodic lattice. The classical Hamiltonian is presented and the technique of stroboscopic maps is used to study the dynamical behavior of the model. The electron motion is found to be completely regular only for small field amplitudes, developing a larger chaotic region as the amplitude increases. The quantum counterpart of the classical Hamiltonian is derived. Exact numerical diagonalizations show the existence of universal, random-matrix fluctuations in the electronic energy bands dressed by the laser field. A detailed analysis of the classical phase space is compatible with the statistical spectral analysis of the quantum model. The application of this model to describe transport and optical absorption in semiconductor superlattices submitted to intense infrared laser radiation is proposed.

Domain size effects in Barkhausen noise

The possible existence of self-organized criticality in Barkhausen noise is investigated theoretically through a single interface model, and experimentally from measurements in amorphous magnetostrictive ribbon Metglas 2605TCA under stress. Contrary to previous interpretations in the literature, both simulation and experiment indicate that the presence of a cutoff in the avalanche size distribution may be attributed to finite size effects.

Laser-induced quantum chaos in 1-D crystals

We study the electronic band structure for a model one-dimensional periodic potential in the presence of a spacially homogeneous laser field. The statistical properties of the energy bands depend on the coupling between the crystal and the laser field, going from Poisson to Wigner-Dyson (GOE) and back to Poisson as the coupling increases. We argue that the classical dynamics of this system resembles that of a periodically driven pendulum. We find that the chaotic regime is not restricted solely to high-lying bands and should thus be of easier access to optical experiments.
