Coherence measures for heralded single-photon sources

Single-photon sources (SPSs) are mainly characterized by the minimum value of their second-order coherence function, viz. their $g^{(2)}$ function. A precise measurement of $g^{(2)}$ may, however, require high time-resolution devices, in whose absence, only time-averaged measurements are accessible. These time-averaged measures, standing alone, do not carry sufficient information for proper characterization of SPSs. Here, we develop a theory, corroborated by an experiment, that allows us to scrutinize the coherence properties of heralded SPSs that rely on continuous-wave parametric down-conversion. Our proposed measures and analysis enable proper standardization of such SPSs.

Approximate groups, II: the solvable linear case

We describe the structure of "K-approximate subgroups'' of solvable subgroups of GL_n(C), showing that they have a large nilpotent piece. By combining this with the main result of our recent paper on approximate subgroups of torsion-free nilpotent groups, we show that such approximate subgroups are efficiently controlled by nilpotent progressions.

Approximate groups, I: the torsion-free nilpotent case

We describe the structure of ``K-approximate subgroups'' of torsion-free nilpotent groups, paying particular attention to Lie groups. Three other works, by Fisher-Katz-Peng, Sanders and Tao, have appeared which independently address related issues. We comment briefly on some of the connections between these papers.

An equivalence between inverse sumset theorems and inverse conjectures for the U^3 norm

We establish a correspondence between inverse sumset theorems (which can be viewed as classifications of approximate (abelian) groups) and inverse theorems for the Gowers norms (which can be viewed as classifications of approximate polynomials). In particular, we show that the inverse sumset theorems of Freiman type are equivalent to the known inverse results for the Gowers U^3 norms, and moreover that the conjectured polynomial strengthening of the former is also equivalent to the polynomial strengthening of the latter. We establish this equivalence in two model settings, namely that of the finite field vector spaces F_2^n, and of the cyclic groups Z/NZ. In both cases the argument involves clarifying the structure of certain types of approximate homomorphism.

Sum-product phenomena in F_p: a brief introduction

These notes arose from my Cambridge Part III course on Additive Combinatorics, given in Lent Term 2009. The aim was to understand the simplest proof of the Bourgain-Glibichuk-Konyagin bounds for exponential sums over subgroups. As a byproduct one obtains a clean proof of the Bourgain-Katz-Tao theorem on the sum-product phenomenon in F_p. The arguments are essentially extracted from a paper of Bourgain, and I benefitted very much from being in receipt of unpublished course notes of Elon Lindenstrauss. No originality is claimed.

On a variant of the large sieve

We introduce a variant of the large sieve and give an example of its use in a sieving problem. Take the interval [N] = {1,...,N} and, for each odd prime p <= N^{1/2}, remove or ``sieve out'' by all n whose reduction mod p lies in some interval I_p of Z/pZ of length (p-1)/2. Let A be the set that remains: then |A| << N^{1/3 + o(1)}, a bound which improves slightly on the bound of |A| << N^{1/2} which results from applying the large sieve in its usual form. This is a very, very weak result in the direction of a question of Helfgott and Venkatesh, who suggested that nothing like equality can occur in applications of the large sieve unless the unsieved set is essentially the set of values of a polynomial (e.g. A is the set of squares). Assuming the ``exponent pairs conjecture'' (which is deep, as it implies a host of classical questions including the Lindelöf hypothesis, Gauss circle problem and Dirichlet divisor problem) the bound can be improved to |A| << N^{o(1)}. This raises the worry that even reasonably simple sieve problems are connected to issues of which we have little understanding at the present time.

Linear Equations in Primes

Consider a system Ψof non-constant affine-linear forms ψ_1,...,ψ_t: Z^d -> Z, no two of which are linearly dependent. Let N be a large integer, and let K be a convex subset of [-N,N]^d. A famous and difficult open conjecture of Hardy and Littlewood predicts an asymptotic, as N -> \infty, for the number of integer points n in K for which the integers ψ_1(n),...,ψ_t(n) are simultaneously prime. This implies many other well-known conjectures, such as the Hardy-Littlewood prime tuples conjecture, the twin prime conjecture, and the (weak) Goldbach conjecture. In this paper we (conditionally) verify this asymptotic under the assumption that no two of the affine-linear forms ψ_1,...,ψ_t are affinely related; this excludes the important ``binary'' cases such as the twin prime or Goldbach conjectures, but does allow one to count ``non-degenerate'' configurations such as arithmetic progressions. Our result assumes two families of conjectures, which we term the Inverse Gowers-norm conjecture GI(s) and the Mobius and Nilsequences Conjecture MN(s), where s \in {1,2,...} is the complexity of the system and measures the extent to which the forms ψ_i depend on each other. For s = 1 these are essentially classical, and the authors recently resolved the cases s = 2. Our results are therefore unconditional in the case s = 2, and in particular we can obtain the expected asymptotics for the number of 4-term progressions p_1 < p_2 < p_3 < p_4 <= N of primes, and more generally for any (non-degenerate) problem involving two linear equations in four prime unknowns.

New bounds for Szemeredi's Theorem, I: Progressions of length 4 in finite field geometries

Let F be a fixed finite field of characteristic at least 5. Let G = F^n be the n-dimensional vector space over F, and write N := |G|. We show that if A is a subset of G with size at least c_F N(log N)^{-c}, for some absolute constant c > 0 and some c_F > 0, then A contains four distinct elements in arithmetic progression. This is equivalent, in the usual notation of additive combinatorics, to the assertion that r_4(G) <<_F N(log N)^{-c}.

The distribution of polynomials over finite fields, with applications to the Gowers norms

In this paper we investigate the uniform distribution properties of polynomials in many variables and bounded degree over a fixed finite field F of prime order. Our main result is that a polynomial P : F^n -> F is poorly-distributed only if P is determined by the values of a few polynomials of lower degree, in which case we say that P has small rank. We give several applications of this result, paying particular attention to consequences for the theory of the so-called Gowers norms. We establish an inverse result for the Gowers U^{d+1}-norm of functions of the form f(x)= e_F(P(x)), where P : F^n -> F is a polynomial of degree less than F, showing that this norm can only be large if f correlates with e_F(Q(x)) for some polynomial Q : F^n -> F of degree at most d. The requirement deg(P) < |F| cannot be dropped entirely. Indeed, we show the above claim fails in characteristic 2 when d = 3 and deg(P)=4, showing that the quartic symmetric polynomial S_4 in F_2^n has large Gowers U^4-norm but does not correlate strongly with any cubic polynomial. This shows that the theory of Gowers norms in low characteristic is not as simple as previously supposed. This counterexample has also been discovered independently by Lovett, Meshulam, and Samorodnitsky. We conclude with sundry other applications of our main result, including a recurrence result and a certain type of nullstellensatz.

A note on the Freiman and Balog-Szemeredi-Gowers theorems in finite fields

We obtain quantitative versions of the Balog-Szemeredi-Gowers and Freiman theorems in the model case of a finite field geometry F_2^n, improving the previously known bounds in such theorems. For instance, if A is a subset of F_2^n such that |A+A| <= K|A| (thus A has small additive doubling), we show that there exists an affine subspace V of F_2^n of cardinality |V| >> K^{-O(\sqrt{K})} |A| such that |A \cap V| >> |V|/2K. Under the assumption that A contains at least |A|^3/K quadruples with a_1 + a_2 + a_3 + a_4 = 0 we obtain a similar result, albeit with the slightly weaker condition |V| >> K^{-O(K)}|A|.

Three topics in additive prime number theory

This is an expository article to accompany my two lectures at the CDM conference. I have used this an excuse to make public two sets of notes I had lying around, and also to put together a short reader's guide to some recent joint work with T.Tao. Contents: 1. An exposition, without much detail, of the work of Goldston, Pintz and Yildirim on gaps between primes; 2. A detailed discussion of the work of Mauduit and Rivat establishing that 50 percent of the primes have odd digit sum when written in base 2; 3. A reader's guide to recent work of T.Tao and the author on linear equations in primes. The sections can be read independently.

On the maximal number of three-term arithmetic progressions in subsets of Z/pZ

Let a be a real number between 0 and 1. Ernie Croot showed that the quantity \max_A #(3-term arithmetic progressions in A)/p^2, where A ranges over all subsets of Z/pZ of size at most a*p, tends to a limit as p tends to infinity through primes. Writing c(a) for this limit, we show that c(a) = a^2/2 provided that a is smaller than some absolute constant. In fact we prove rather more, establishing a structure theorem for sets having the maximal number of 3-term progressions amongst all subsets of Z/pZ of cardinality m, provided that m < c*p.

The primes contain arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions

We prove that there are arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions of primes. There are three major ingredients. The first is Szemeredi's theorem, which asserts that any subset of the integers of positive density contains progressions of arbitrary length. The second, which is the main new ingredient of this paper, is a certain transference principle. This allows us to deduce from Szemeredi's theorem that any subset of a sufficiently pseudorandom set of positive relative density contains progressions of arbitrary length. The third ingredient is a recent result of Goldston and Yildirim. Using this, one may place the primes inside a pseudorandom set of ``almost primes'' with positive relative density.

Quadratic Uniformity of the Mobius Function

This paper is a part of our programme to generalise the Hardy-Littlewood method to handle systems of linear questions in primes. This programme is laid out in our paper Linear Equations in Primes [LEP], which accompanies this submission. In particular, the results of this paper may be used, together with the machinery of [LEP], to establish an asymptotic for the number of four-term progressions p_1 < p_2 < p_3 < p_4 <= N of primes, and more generally any problem counting prime points inside a ``non-degenerate'' affine lattice of codimension at most 2. The main result of this paper is a proof of the Mobius and Nilsequences Conjecture for 1 and 2-step nilsequences. This conjecture is introduced in [LEP] and amounts to showing that if G/Γis an s-step nilmanifold, s <= 2, if F : G/Γ-> [-1,1] is a Lipschitz function, and if T_g : G/Γ-> G/Γis the action of g \in G on G/Γ, then the Mobius function μ(n) is orthogonal to the sequence F(T_g^n x) in a fairly strong sense, uniformly in g and x in G/Γ. This can be viewed as a ``quadratic'' generalisation of an exponential sum estimate of Davenport, and is proven by the following the methods of Vinogradov and Vaughan.

Montreal Lecture Notes on Quadratic Fourier Analysis

These are notes to accompany four lectures that I gave at the School on Additive Combinatorics, held in Montreal, Quebec between March 30th and April 5th 2006. My aim is to introduce ``quadratic fourier analysis'' in so far as we understand it at the present time. Specifically, we will describe ``quadratic objects'' of various types and their relation to additive structures, particularly four-term arithmetic progressions. I will focus on qualitative results, referring the reader to the literature for the many interesting quantitative questions in this theory. Thus these lectures have a distinctly ``soft'' flavour in many places. Some of the notes cover unpublished work which is joint with Terence Tao. This will be published more formally at some future juncture.

Freiman's theorem in finite fields via extremal set theory

Using various results from extremal set theory (interpreted in the language of additive combinatorics), we prove an asyptotically sharp version of Freiman's theorem in F_2^n: if A in F_2^n is a set for which |A + A| <= K|A| then A is contained in a subspace of size 2^{2K + O(\sqrt{K}\log K)}|A|; except for the O(\sqrt{K} \log K) error, this is best possible. If in addition we assume that A is a downset, then we can also cover A by O(K^{46}) translates of a coordinate subspace of size at most |A|, thereby verifying the so-called polynomial Freiman-Ruzsa conjecture in this case. A common theme in the arguments is the use of compression techniques. These have long been familiar in extremal set theory, but have been used only rarely in the additive combinatorics literature.

A quantitative version of the idempotent theorem in harmonic analysis

Suppose that G is a locally compact abelian group, and write M(G) for the algebra of bounded, regular, complex-valued measures under convolution. A measure μin M(G) is said to be idempotent if μ* μ= μ, or alternatively if the Fourier-Stieltjes transform μ^ takes only the values 0 and 1. The Cohen-Helson-Rudin idempotent theorem states that a measure μis idempotent if and only if the set {r in G^ : μ^(r) = 1} belongs to the coset ring of G^, that is to say we may write μ^ as a finite plus/minus 1 combination of characteristic functions of cosets r_j + H_j, where the H_j are open subgroups of G^. In this paper we show that the number L of such cosets can be bounded in terms of the norm ||μ||, and in fact one may take L <= \exp\exp(C||μ||^4). In particular our result is non-trivial even for finite groups.
