Maximal rigid subalgebras of deformations and $L^{2}$-cohomology

In the past two decades, Sorin Popa's breakthrough deformation/rigidity theory has produced remarkable rigidity results for von Neumann algebras $M$ which can be deformed inside a larger algebra $\widetilde M \supseteq M$ by an action $α: \mathbb{R} \to {\rm Aut}(\widetilde M)$, while simultaneously containing subalgebras $Q$ {\it rigid} with respect to that deformation, that is, such that $α_t \to {\rm id}$ uniformly on the unit ball of $Q$ as $t \to 0$. However, it has remained unclear how to exploit the interplay between distinct rigid subalgebras not in specified relative position. We show that in fact, any diffuse subalgebra which is rigid with respect to a mixing s-malleable deformation is contained in a subalgebra which is uniquely maximal with respect to being rigid. In particular, the algebra generated by any family of rigid subalgebras that intersect diffusely must itself be rigid with respect to that deformation. The case where this family has two members was the motivation for this work, showing for example that if $G$ is a countable group with $β^{1}_{(2)}(G) > 0$, then $L(G)$ cannot be generated by two property $(T)$ subalgebras with diffuse intersection; however, the result is most striking when the family is infinite.

Max-Min theorems for weak containment, square summable homoclinic points, and completely positive entropy

We prove a max-min theorem for weak containment in the context of algebraic actions. Namely, we show that given an algebraic action of $G$ on $X,$ there is a maximal, closed $G$-invariant subgroup $Y$ of $X$ so that the action of $G$ on $Y$ is weakly contained in a Bernoulli shift. This subgroup is also the minimal subgroup so that any action weakly contained in a Bernoulli shift is $G\curvearrowright X/Y$-ergodic "in the presence of $G\curvearrowright X$". We give several applications, including a major simplification of the proof that measure entropy equals topological entropy for principal algebraic actions whose associated convolution operator is injective. We also deduce from our techniques that algebraic actions whose square summable homoclinic group is dense have completely positive entropy when the acting group is sofic.

An Operator theoretic approach to the convergence of rearranged Fourier series

This article studies the rearrangement problem for Fourier series introduced by P.L. Ulyanov, who conjectured that every continuous function on the torus admits a rearrangement of its Fourier coefficients such that the rearranged partial sums of the Fourier series converge uniformly to the function. The main theorem here gives several new equivalences to this conjecture in terms of the convergence of the rearranged Fourier series in the strong (equivalently in this case, weak) operator topologies on $B(L_2(T))$. Additionally, a new framework for further investigation is introduced by considering convergence for subspaces of $L_2$, which leads to many methods for attempting to prove or disprove Ulyanov's conjecture. In this framework, we provide characterizations of unconditional convergence of the Fourier series in the SOT and WOT. These considerations also give rise to some interesting questions regarding weaker versions of the rearrangement problem. Along the way, we consider some interesting questions related to the classical theory of trigonometric polynomials. All of the results here admit natural extensions to arbitrary dimensions.

Local weak$^{*}$-Convergence, algebraic actions, and a max-min principle

We continue our study of when topological and measure-theoretic entropy agree for algebraic action of sofic groups. Specifically, we provide a new abstract method to prove that an algebraic action is strongly sofic. The method is based on passing to a "limiting object" for sequences of measures which are asymptotically supported on topological microstates. This limiting object has a natural poset structure that we are able to exploit to prove a max-min principle: if the sofic approximation has ergodic centralizer, then the largest subgroup on which the action is a local weak$^{*}$-limit of measures supported on topological microstates is equal to the smallest subgroup which absorbs all topological microstates. We are able to provide a version for the case when the centralizer is not ergodic. We give many applications, including show that for residually finite groups completely positive (lower) topological entropy (in the presence) is equivalent to completely positive (lower) measure entropy in the presence.

Weak equivalence to Bernoulli shifts for some algebraic actions

Namely, we prove that if $G$ is a countable, discrete group and $f\in M_{n}(\Z(G))$ is invertible on $\ell^{2}(G)^{\oplus n},$ but $f$ is not invertible in $M_{n}(\Z(G))$, then the measure-preserving action of $G$ on $X_{f}$ equipped with the Haar measure is weakly equivalent to a Bernoulli action. We shall in fact prove this weak equivalence in the case that $f$ has a "formal inverse in $\ell^{2}$".

Metric Approximations of Wreath Products

Given the large class of groups already known to be sofic, there is seemingly a shortfall in results concerning their permanence properties. We address this problem for wreath products, and in particular investigate the behaviour of more general metric approximations of groups under wreath products. Our main result is the following. Suppose that $H$ is a sofic group and $G$ is a countable, discrete group. If $G$ is sofic, hyperlinear, weakly sofic, or linear sofic, then $G\wr H$ is also sofic, hyperlinear, weakly sofic, or linear sofic respectively. In each case we construct relevant metric approximations, extending a general construction of metric approximations for $G\wr H$ that uses soficity of $H$.

Local and doubly empirical convergence and the entropy of algebraic actions of sofic Groups

Let G be a sofic group and X a compact group that G acts on by automorphisms. Using (and reformulating) the notion of doubly-quenched convergence developed by Austin, we show that in many cases the topological and the measure-theoretic entropy with respect to the Haar measure of this action agree. Our method of proof recovers all known examples. Moreover, the proofs are direct and do not go through explicitly computing the measure-theoretic or topological entropy.

1-bounded entropy and regularity problems in von Neumann algebras

We investigate the singular subspace of an inclusion of tracial von Neumann algebras. The singular subspace is a canonical N-N subbimodule of L^{2}(M) and it contains the quasinormalizer introduced by Popa, one-sided quasinormalizer introduced by Fang-Gao-Smith, and wq-normalizer introduced in Galatan-Popa (following upon work in Ioana-Peterson-Popa and Popa). We then obtain a weak notion of regularity (called spectral regularity) by demanding that the singular subspace of N in M generates M. By abstracting Voiculescu's original proof of absence of Cartan subalgebras, we show that there can be no diffuse, hyperfinite subalgebra of L(\FF_{n}) which is spectrally regular. Our techniques are robust enough to repeat this process by transfinite induction and rule out chains of spectrally regular inclusions of algebras starting from a diffuse, hyperfinite algebra and ending in L(\FF_{n}). We use this to prove some conjectures made by Galatan-Popa in their study of smooth cohomology of II_{1}-factors. Our results may be regarded as a consistency check for the possibility of existence of a "good" cohomology theory of II_{1}-factors. Lastly, we deduce nonisomorphism results for crossed products of q-deformed free group factors by Bogoliubov actions, as well as for the continuous core of q-deformed Free Araki-Woods algebras. This extends work of Houdayer-Shlyakhtenko as well as Shlyakhtenko.

Fuglede-Kadison Determinants and Sofic Entropy

We relate Fuglede-Kadison determinants to entropy of algebraic actions of sofic groups in essentially complete generality. This generalizes recent results of Hanfeng Li and Andreas Thom from the amenable case to the sofic case, as well as results of David Kerr, Hanfeng Li, and Lewis Bowen in the residually finite case. Moreover, the proof given is the first calculation of entropy of algebraic actions to avoid a nontrivial determinant approximation. We apply our results to a problem of Christopher Deninger, generalizing results of Hanfeng Li and David Kerr. Finally, we show that in many cases, finiteness of topological entropy for algebraic actions of sofic groups is equivalent to having metric mean dimension zero.

Independence Tuples and Deninger's Problem

Motivated by our results in "Polish Models and Sofic Entropy," we define modified version of the independence tuples for sofic entropy developed by Kerr and Li. These modified version essentially require that the independence sequences give rise to representations weakly contained in the left regular when projected onto the Koopman representation. Using this, we can generalize our previous results for Deninger's Problem. Namely, we can show that if G is a sofic group, and if f is in M_{n}(Z(G)) and is invertible as an operator on l^{2}(G)^{n}, then the Fuglede-Kadison determinant of f is 1 if and only if f is invertible in M_{n}(Z(G)).

Sofic Entropy of Gaussian Actions

Associated to any orthogonal representation of a countable discrete group is an probability measure-preserving action called the Gaussian action. Using the Polish model formalism we developed before, we compute the entropy (in the sense of Bowen, Kerr-Li) of Gaussian actions when the group is sofic. Computations of entropy for Gaussian actions has only been done when the acting group is abelian and thus our results are new even in the amenable case. Fundamental to our approach are methods of noncommutative harmonic analysis and $C^{*}$-algebras which replace the Fourier analysis used in the abelian case.

Polish Models and Sofic Entropy

For actions of a sofic group on probability spaces, the entropy has been defined by Bowen, with an extension by Kerr-Li. In particular, when the action is by homeomorphisms of a compact space preserving a given measure, Kerr-Li show one can compute the measure-theoretic entropy in a manner which uses the topology of the space. We show how to compute the entropy of a an action of homeomorphisms of a Polish space preserving a given measure, also in a manner which uses the topology of the space. We give applications to spectral properties of actions with positive entropy, as well as for actions of completely positive entropy.

Mixing and Spectral Gap Relative to Pinsker Factors for Sofic Groups

Motivated by our previous results, we investigate structural properties of probability measure-preserving actions of sofic groups relative to their Pinsker factor. We also consider the same properties relative to the Outer Pinsker factor, which is another generalization of the Pinsker factor in the nonamenable case. The Outer Pinsker factor is motivated by extension entropy for extensions, which fixes some of the "pathological" behavior of sofic entropy: namely increase of entropy under factor maps. We show that an arbitrary probability measure-preserving action of a sofic group is mixing relative to its Pinsker and Outer Pinsker factors and, if the group is nonamenable, it has spectral gap relative to its Pinsker and Outer Pinsker factors. Our methods are similar to those we developed in "Polish models and sofic entropy" and based on representation-theoretic techniques. One crucial difference is that instead of considering unitary representations of a group we must consider *-representations of algebraic crossed products.

Metric Mean Dimension for Algebraic Actions of Sofic Groups

Recently Bingbing Liang and Hanfeng Li computed the mean dimension and metric mean dimension for algebraic actions of amenable groups. We show how to extend their computation of metric mean dimension to the case of sofic groups, provided that the dual module is finitely generated. Additionally, we show that when the dual module is finitely presented that the mean dimension is the von Neumann rank. The proof also goes through introducing \ell^{p}-analogues of metric mean dimension, which may be seen as an obstruction to the equality of mean dimension and metric mean dimension.

An l^{p}-Version of von Neumann Dimension for Banach Space Representation of Sofic Groups II

In previous work, we defined extended versions of von Neumann dimension for Banach space representations of sofic groups. The main application was a definition of l^{p}-dimension and, using this, a proof that the actions of a countable discrete group G on l^{p}(G)^{oplus n} are pairwise non-isomorphic. We answer most of the Conjectures stated at the end of the previous paper "An l^{p}-Version of von Neumann Dimension for Banach Space Representation of Sofic Groups." Tackling the case of finte-dimensional representations involved passing to equivalence relations. This is part of current research to be explained in the paper "An l^{p}-Version of von Neumann Dimension for Representations of Equivalence Relations."

An l^{p}-Version of von-Neumann Dimension For Banach Space Representations of Sofic Groups

A. Gournay defined a notion of $l^{p}$-dimension for subspaces of the l^{q}-left-regular representation of an amenable discrete group. We give an alternative definition that works for sofic groups and a different notion for groups satisfying the Connes embedding conjecture, and for more general representations on Banach spaces. We extend certain results due to Gournay, as well as discuss l^{p}-Betti numbers of Free groups.

An l^{p}-Version of von Neumann Dimension for Representations of Equivalence Relations

In our previous paper, "l^{p}-Version of von Neumann Dimension for Banach Space Representations of Sofic Groups," we define an extended version of von Neumann dimension for actions of a sofic group on a Banach space. This dimension was studied especially for the translation action of G on l^{p}(G), as well as the multiplication on the non-commutative L^{p} space associated with the group von Neumann algebra. We discuss how one can similarly define an extended dimension for representations of an equivalence relation. We also define an analogue of l^{2}-Betti numbers for equivalence relations in the l^{p}-case, this may shed some light on the conjectured relation between cost and first l^{2}-Betti number.
