Supergravity backgrounds of the eta-deformed AdS2 x S2 x T6 and AdS5 x S5 superstrings

We construct supergravity backgrounds for the integrable eta-deformations of the AdS2 x S2 x T6 and AdS5 x S5 superstring sigma models. The eta-deformation is governed by an R-matrix that solves the non-split modified classical Yang-Baxter equation on the superisometry algebra of the model. Such R-matrices include those of Drinfel'd-Jimbo type, which are constructed from a Dynkin diagram and the associated Cartan-Weyl basis. Drinfel'd-Jimbo R-matrices associated with inequivalent bases will typically lead to different deformed backgrounds. For the two models under consideration we find that the unimodularity condition, implying that there is no Weyl anomaly, is satisfied if and only if all the simple roots are fermionic. For AdS2 x S2 x T6 we construct backgrounds corresponding to the three Dynkin diagrams. When all the simple roots are fermionic we find a supergravity background previously obtained by directly solving the supergravity equations. For AdS5 x S5 we construct a supergravity background corresponding to the Dynkin diagram with all fermionic simple roots.

Three-parameter integrable deformation of Z_4 permutation supercosets

A three-parameter integrable deformation of $\mathbb{Z}_4$ permutation supercosets is constructed. These supercosets are of the form $ {\widehat{F}} / {F_0}$ where $F_0$ is the bosonic diagonal subgroup of the product supergroup $\widehat{F}=\widehat{G} \times \widehat{G}$. They include the AdS$_3$ $\times$ S$^3$ and AdS$_3$ $\times$ S$^3$ $\times$ S$^3$ supercosets. This deformation encompasses both the bi-Yang-Baxter deformation of the semi-symmetric space $σ$-model on $\mathbb{Z}_4$ permutation supercosets and the mixed flux model. Truncating the action at the bosonic level, we show that one recovers the bi-Yang-Baxter deformation of the principal chiral model plus Wess-Zumino term.

Combining the bi-Yang-Baxter deformation, the Wess-Zumino term and TsT transformations in one integrable sigma-model

A multi-parameter integrable deformation of the principal chiral model is presented. The Yang-Baxter and bi-Yang-Baxter sigma-models, the principal chiral model plus a Wess-Zumino term and the TsT transformation of the principal chiral model are all recovered when the appropriate deformation parameters vanish. When the Lie group is SU(2), we show that this four-parameter integrable deformation of the SU(2) principal chiral model corresponds to the Lukyanov model.

Poisson-Lie duals of the eta deformed symmetric space sigma model

Poisson-Lie dualising the eta deformation of the G/H symmetric space sigma model with respect to the simple Lie group G is conjectured to give an analytic continuation of the associated lambda deformed model. In this paper we investigate when the eta deformed model can be dualised with respect to a subgroup G_0 of G. Starting from the first-order action on the complexified group and integrating out the degrees of freedom associated to different subalgebras, we find it is possible to dualise when G_0 is associated to a sub-Dynkin diagram. Additional U_1 factors built from the remaining Cartan generators can also be included. The resulting construction unifies both the Poisson-Lie dual with respect to G and the complete abelian dual of the eta deformation in a single framework, with the integrated algebras unimodular in both cases. We speculate that extending these results to the path integral formalism may provide an explanation for why the eta deformed AdS_5 x S^5 superstring is not one-loop Weyl invariant, that is the couplings do not solve the equations of type IIB supergravity, yet its complete abelian dual and the lambda deformed model are.

Maximally extended sl(2|2), q-deformed d(2,1;epsilon) and 3D kappa-Poincaré

We show that the maximal extension sl(2) times psl(2|2) times C3 of the sl(2|2) superalgebra can be obtained as a contraction limit of the semi-simple superalgebra d(2,1;epsilon) times sl(2). We reproduce earlier results on the corresponding q-deformed Hopf algebra and its universal R-matrix by means of contraction. We make the curious observation that the above algebra is related to kappa-Poincaré symmetry. When dropping the graded part psl(2|2) we find a novel one-parameter deformation of the 3D kappa-Poincaré algebra. Our construction also provides a concise exact expression for its universal R-matrix.

Marginal and non-commutative deformations via non-abelian T-duality

In this short article we develop recent proposals to relate Yang-Baxter sigma-models and non-abelian T-duality. We demonstrate explicitly that the holographic space-times associated to both (multi-parameter)-$β$-deformations and non-commutative deformations of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills gauge theory including the RR fluxes can be obtained via the machinery of non-abelian T-duality in Type II supergravity.

Orbit method quantization of the AdS$_2$ superparticle

We consider the Hamiltonian reduction and canonical quantization of a massive AdS$_2$ superparticle realized on the coset OSP(1|2)/SO(1,1). The phase space of the massive superparticle is represented as a coadjoint orbit of a timelike element of $\mathfrak{osp}$(1|2). This orbit has a well defined symplectic structure and the OSP(1|2) symmetry is realized as the Poisson bracket algebra of the Noether charges. We then construct canonical coordinates given by one bosonic and one fermionic oscillator, whose quantization leads to the Holstein-Primakoff type realization of $\mathfrak{osp}$(1|2). We also perform a similar analysis and discuss new features and inconsistencies in the massless case.

Non-split and split deformations of AdS_5

The eta-deformation of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring depends on a non-split r matrix for the superalgebra psu(2,2|4). Much of the investigation into this model has considered one particular choice, however there are a number of inequivalent alternatives. This is also true for the bosonic sector of the theory with su(2,2), the isometry algebra of AdS_5, admitting one split and three non-split r matrices. In this article we explore these r matrices and the corresponding geometries. We investigate their contraction limits, comment on supergravity backgrounds and demonstrate their relation to gauged-WZW deformations. We then extend the three non-split cases to AdS_5 x S^5 and compute four separate bosonic two-particle tree-level S-matrices based on inequivalent BMN-type light-cone gauges. The resulting S-matrices, while different, are related by momentum-dependent one-particle changes of basis.

On jordanian deformations of AdS_5 and supergravity

We consider various homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformations of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring that can be obtained from the eta-deformed superstring and related models by singular boosts. The jordanian deformations we obtain in this way behave similarly to the eta-deformed model with regard to supergravity: T dualizing the classical sigma model it is possible to find corresponding solutions of supergravity, which, however, have dilatons that prevent T dualizing back. Hence the backgrounds of these jordanian deformations are not solutions of supergravity. Still, they do satisfy a set of recently found modified supergravity equations which implies that the corresponding sigma models are scale invariant. The abelian models that we obtain by singular boosts do directly correspond to solutions of supergravity. In addition to our main results we consider contraction limits of our main example, which do correspond to supergravity solutions.

The S-matrix algebra of the AdS2 X S2 superstring

In this paper we find the Yangian algebra responsible for the integrability of the AdS2 X S2 X T^6 superstring in the planar limit. We demonstrate the symmetry of the corresponding exact S-matrix in the massive sector, including the presence of the secret symmetry. We give two alternative presentations of the Hopf algebra, along with related discussions on the issue of evaluation representations. We study the classical r-matrix, and re-discover the need for a secret symmetry also in this context. Finally, taking the simplifying zero-coupling limit of the S-matrix as a generating R-matrix for the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz, we obtain an effective model of free fermions on a periodic spin-chain. This limit should provide hints to the one-loop anomalous dimension of the mysterious superconformal quantum mechanics dual to the superstring theory in this geometry.

Towards a two-parameter q-deformation of AdS_3 x S^3 x M^4 superstrings

We construct a two-parameter deformation of the Metsaev-Tseytlin action for supercosets with isometry group of the form G x G. The resulting action is classically integrable and is Poisson-Lie symmetric suggesting that the symmetry of the model is q-deformed, U_q_L(G) x U_q_R(G). Focusing on the cases relevant for strings moving in AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 and AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x S^1, we analyze the corresponding deformations of the AdS_3 and S^3 metrics. We also construct a two-parameter $q$-deformation of the u(1) + psu(1|1)^2 x u(1) x R^3-invariant R-matrix and closure condition, which underlie the light-cone gauge S-matrix and dispersion relation of the aforementioned string theories. With the appropriate identification of parameters, the near-BMN limit of the dispersion relation is shown to agree with that found from the deformed supercoset sigma model.

Integrable S-matrices, massive and massless modes and the AdS_2 x S^2 superstring

We derive the exact S-matrix for the scattering of particular representations of the centrally-extended psu(1|1)^2 Lie superalgebra, conjectured to be related to the massive modes of the light-cone gauge string theory on AdS_2 x S^2 x T^6. The S-matrix consists of two copies of a centrally-extended psu(1|1) invariant S-matrix and is in agreement with the tree-level result following from perturbation theory. Although the overall factor is left unfixed, the constraints following from crossing symmetry and unitarity are given. The scattering involves long representations of the symmetry algebra, and the relevant representation theory is studied in detail. We also discuss Yangian symmetry and find it has a standard form for a particular limit of the aforementioned representations. This has a natural interpretation as the massless limit, and we investigate the corresponding limits of the massive S-matrix. Under the assumption that the massless modes of the light-cone gauge string theory transform in these limiting representations, the resulting S-matrices would provide the building blocks for the full S-matrix. Finally, some brief comments are given on the Bethe ansatz.

$AdS_3 \times S^3 \times M^4$ string S-matrices from unitarity cuts

Continuing the program initiated in arXiv:1304.1798 we investigate unitarity methods applied to two-dimensional integrable field theories. The one-loop computation is generalized to encompass theories with different masses in the asymptotic spectrum and external leg corrections. Additionally, the prescription for working with potentially singular cuts is modified to cope with an ambiguity that was not encountered before. The resulting methods are then applied to three light-cone gauge string theories; i) $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ supported by RR flux, ii) $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times S^3 \times S^1$ supported by RR flux and iii) $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ supported by a mix of RR and NSNS fluxes. In the first case we find agreement with the exact result following from symmetry considerations and in the second case with one-loop semiclassical computations. This agreement crucially includes the rational terms and hence supports the conjecture that S-matrices of integrable field theories are cut-constructible, up to a possible shift in the coupling. In the final case, under the assumption that our methods continue to give all rational terms, we give a conjecture for the one-loop phases.

Two-dimensional S-matrices from unitarity cuts

Using unitarity methods, we compute, for several massive two-dimensional models, the cut-constructible part of the one-loop 2->2 scattering S-matrices from the tree-level amplitudes. We apply our method to various integrable theories, finding evidence that for supersymmetric models the one-loop S-matrix is cut-constructible, while for models without supersymmetry (but with integrability) the missing rational terms are proportional to the tree-level S-matrix and therefore can be interpreted as a shift in the coupling. Finally, applying our procedure to the world-sheet theory for the light-cone gauge-fixed AdS_5 x S^5 superstring we reproduce, at one-loop in the near-BMN expansion, the S-matrix known from integrability techniques.

Unitarity methods for scattering in two dimensions

The standard unitarity-cut method is applied to several massive two-dimensional models, including the world-sheet AdS$_5\times S^5$ superstring, to compute $2\to 2$ scattering S-matrices at one loop from tree level amplitudes. Evidence is found for the cut-constructibility of supersymmetric integrable models, while for models without supersymmetry (but integrable) the missing rational terms can be interpreted as a shift in the coupling.

Restoring Unitarity in the q-Deformed World-Sheet S-Matrix

The world-sheet S-matrix of the string in AdS5 x S5 has been shown to admit a q-deformation that relates it to the S-matrix of a generalization of the sine-Gordon theory, which arises as the Pohlmeyer reduction of the superstring. Whilst this is a fascinating development the resulting S-matrix is not explicitly unitary. The problem has been known for a long time in the context of S-matrices related to quantum groups. A braiding relation often called "unitarity" actually only corresponds to quantum field theory unitarity when the S-matrix is Hermitian analytic and quantum group S-matrices manifestly violate this. On the other hand, overall consistency of the S-matrix under the bootstrap requires that the deformation parameter is a root of unity and consequently one is forced to perform the "vertex" to IRF, or SOS, transformation on the states to truncate the spectrum consistently. In the IRF formulation unitarity is now manifest and the string S-matrix and the S-matrix of the generalised sine-Gordon theory are recovered in two different limits. In the latter case, expanding the Yang-Baxter equation we find that the tree-level S-matrix of the Pohlmeyer-reduced string should satisfy a modified classical Yang-Baxter equation explaining the apparent anomaly in the perturbative computation. We show that the IRF form of the S-matrix meshes perfectly with the bootstrap equations.

Bound States of the q-Deformed AdS5 x S5 Superstring S-matrix

The investigation of the q deformation of the S-matrix for excitations on the string world sheet in AdS5 x S5 is continued. We argue that due to the lack of Lorentz invariance the situation is more subtle than in a relativistic theory in that the nature of bound states depends on their momentum. At low enough momentum |p| 1. This subtlety fixes a problem involving the consistency of crossing symmetry with the relativistic limit found in earlier work. With mirror kinematics, obtained after a double Wick rotation, the bound state structure is simpler and there are no marginally unstable bound states.

q-Deformation of the AdS5 x S5 Superstring S-matrix and its Relativistic Limit

A set of four factorizable non-relativistic S-matrices for a multiplet of fundamental particles are defined based on the R-matrix of the quantum group deformation of the centrally extended superalgebra su(2|2). The S-matrices are a function of two independent couplings g and q=exp(iπ/k). The main result is to find the scalar factor, or dressing phase, which ensures that the unitarity and crossing equations are satisfied. For generic (g,k), the S-matrices are branched functions on a product of rapidity tori. In the limit k->infinity, one of them is identified with the S-matrix describing the magnon excitations on the string world sheet in AdS5 x S5, while another is the mirror S-matrix that is needed for the TBA. In the g->infinity limit, the rapidity torus degenerates, the branch points disappear and the S-matrices become meromorphic functions, as required by relativistic S-matrix theory. However, it is only the mirror S-matrix which satisfies the correct relativistic crossing equation. The mirror S-matrix in the relativistic limit is then closely related to that of the semi-symmetric space sine-Gordon theory obtained from the string theory by the Pohlmeyer reduction, but has anti-symmetric rather than symmetric bound states. The interpolating S-matrix realizes at the quantum level the fact that at the classical level the two theories correspond to different limits of a one-parameter family of symplectic structures of the same integrable system.
