General Features of Supersymmetric Signals at the ILC: Solving the LHC Inverse Problem

We present the first detailed, large-scale study of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) at a $\sqrt s=500$ GeV International Linear Collider, including full Standard Model backgrounds and detector simulation. We investigate 242 points in the MSSM parameter space, which we term models, that have been shown by Arkani-Hamed et al to be difficult to study at the LHC. In fact, these points in MSSM parameter space correspond to 162 pairs of models which give indistinguishable signatures at the LHC, giving rise to the so-called LHC Inverse Problem. We first determine whether the production of the various SUSY particles is visible above the Standard Model background for each of these parameter space points, and then make a detailed comparison of their various signatures. Assuming an integrated luminosity of 500 fb$^{-1}$, we find that only 82 out of 242 models lead to visible signatures of some kind with a significance $\geq 5$ and that only 57(63) out of the 162 model pairs are distinguishable at $5(3)σ$. Our analysis includes PYTHIA and CompHEP SUSY signal generation, full matrix element SM backgrounds for all $2\to 2, 2\to 4$, and $2\to 6$ processes, ISR and beamstrahlung generated via WHIZARD/GuineaPig, and employs the fast SiD detector simulation org.lcsim.

Top Compositeness at the Tevatron and LHC

We explore the possibility that the right-handed top quark is composite. We examine the consequences that compositeness would have on $t \bar{t}$ production at the Tevatron, and derive a weak constraint on the scale of compositeness of order a few hundred GeV from the $t \bar{t}$ inclusive cross section. More detailed studies of differential properties of $t \bar{t}$ production could potentially improve this limit. We find that a composite top can result in an enhancement of the $t \bar{t} t \bar{t}$ production rate at the LHC (of as much as $10^3$ compared to the Standatd Model four top rate). We explore observables which allow us to extract the four top rate from the backgrounds, and show that the LHC can either discover or constrain top compositeness for wide ranges of parameter space.

Kaluza-Klein Gluons as a Diagnostic of Warped Models

We study the properties of $g^{1}$, the first excited state of the gluon in representative variants of the Randall Sundrum model with the Standard Model fields in the bulk. We find that measurements of the coupling to light quarks (from the inclusive cross-section for $pp\to g^{1} \to t\bar t$), the coupling to bottom quarks (from the rate of $pp\to g^{1} b$), as well as the overall width, can provide powerful discriminants between the models. In models with large brane kinetic terms, the $g^1$ resonance can even potentially be discovered decaying into dijets against the large QCD background. We also derive bounds based on existing Tevatron searches for resonant $t \bar{t}$ production and find that they require $M_{g^{1}} \gtrsim 950$ GeV. In addition we explore the pattern of interference between the $g^1$ signal and the non-resonant SM background, defining an asymmetry parameter for the invariant mass distribution. The interference probes the relative signs of the couplings of the $g^{1}$ to light quark pairs and to $t\bar t$, and thus provides an indication that the top is localized on the other side of the extra dimension from the light quarks, as is typical in the RS framework.

The Bulk RS KK-gluon at the LHC

We study the possibility of discovering and measuring the properties of the lightest Kaluza-Klein excitation of the gluon in a Randall-Sundrum scenario where the Standard Model matter and gauge fields propagate in the bulk. The KK-gluon decays primarily into top quarks. We discuss how to use the $t \bar{t}$ final states to discover and probe the properties of the KK-gluon. Identification of highly energetic tops is crucial for this analysis. We show that conventional identification methods relying on well separated decay products will not work for heavy resonances but suggest alternative methods for top identification for energetic tops. We find, conservatively, that resonances with masses less than 5 TeV can be discovered if the algorithm to identify high $p_T$ tops can reject the QCD background by a factor of 10. We also find that for similar or lighter masses the spin can be determined and for lighter masses the chirality of the coupling to $t\bar t$ can be measured. Since the energetic top pair final state is a generic signature for a large class of new physics as the top quark presumably couples most strongly to the electroweak symmetry breaking sector, the methods we have outlined to study the properties of the KK-gluon should also be important in other scenarios.

Off-the-Wall Higgs in the Universal Randall-Sundrum Model

We outline a consistent Randall-Sundrum (RS) framework in which a fundamental 5-dimensional Higgs doublet induces electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB). In this framework of a warped Universal Extra Dimension, the lightest Kaluza-Klein (KK) mode of the bulk Higgs is tachyonic leading to a vacuum expectation value (vev) at the TeV scale. The consistency of this picture imposes a set of constraints on the parameters in the Higgs sector. A novel feature of our scenario is the emergence of an adjustable bulk profile for the Higgs vev. We also find a tower of non-tachyonic Higgs KK modes at the weak scale. We consider an interesting implementation of this ``Off-the-Wall Higgs'' mechanism where the 5-dimensional curvature-scalar coupling alone generates the tachyonic mode responsible for EWSB. In this case, additional relations among the parameters of the Higgs and gravitational sectors are established. We discuss the experimental signatures of the bulk Higgs in general, and those of the ``Gravity-Induced'' EWSB in particular.

Black holes in many dimensions at the LHC: testing critical string theory

We consider black hole production at the LHC in a generic scenario with many extra dimensions where the Standard Model fields are confined to a brane. With $\sim 20$ dimensions the hierarchy problem is shown to be naturally solved without the need for large compactification radii. We find that in such a scenario the properties of black holes can be used to determine the number of extra dimensions, $n$. In particular, we demonstrate that measurements of the decay distributions of such black holes at the LHC can determine if $n$ is significantly larger than 6 or 7 with high confidence, and thus can probe one of the critical properties of string theory compactifications.

Collider phenomenology of Higgs bosons in Left-Right symmetric Randall-Sundrum models

We investigate the collider phenomenology of a left-right symmetric Randall-Sundrum model with fermions and gauge bosons in the bulk. We find that the model is allowed by precision electroweak data as long as the ratio of the (unwarped) Higgs vev to the curvature scale is $v/k \le 1/4$. In that region there can be substantial modifications to the Higgs properties. In particular, the couplings to $WW$ and $ZZ$ are reduced, the coupling to gluons is enhanced, and the coupling to $γγ$ can receive shifts in either direction. The Higgs mass bound from LEP II data can potentially be relaxed to $m_H \gtrsim 80$ GeV.

Higgs bosons in Left-Right symmetric Randall-Sundrum models

We study the corrections to Higgs physics in a model of a single warped extra dimension with all fields except the Higgs in the bulk, and a gauge symmetry extended to $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{B-L}$. We find that generically the Higgs coupling to electroweak gauge boson pairs is suppressed, the coupling to gluons is enhanced, and the coupling to photons is often suppressed, but can be enhanced.

Signatures of long-lived gluinos in split supersymmetry

We examine the experimental signatures for the production of gluinos at colliders and in cosmic rays within the split supersymmetry scenario. Unlike in the MSSM, the gluinos in this model are relatively long-lived due to the large value of the squark masses which mediate their decay. Searches at colliders are found to be sensitive to the nature of gluino fragmentation as well as the gluino-hadron interactions with nuclei and energy deposition as it traverses the detector. We find that the worst-case scenario, where a neutral gluino-hadron passes through the detector with little energy deposition, is well described by a monojet signature. For this case, using Run I data we obtain a bound of $m_{\tilde g} > 170$ GeV; this will increase to 210(1100) GeV at Run II(LHC) if no excess events are observed. In the opposite case, where a charged gluino-hadron travels through the detector, a significantly greater reach is obtained via stable charged particle search techniques. We also examine the production of gluino pairs in the atmosphere by cosmic rays and show they are potentially observable at IceCube; this would provide a cross-check for observations at hadron colliders.

Yukawa Hierarchies From Extra Dimensions With Small FCNC

We investigate a class of extra dimensional models where all of the Standard Model fermions are localized to a single fixed point in an $S_1/Z_2$ orbifold, and each species is localized with an exponential wavefunction with a different width. We show that this naturally generates Yukawa hierarchies of the size present in the Standard Model, and we find a set of model parameters that reproduces the observed masses and mixings to experimental accuracy. In addition, the dominant constraints, arising from flavor changing neutral currents, are shown to restrict the compactification scale to be $1/R \ge 2-5 \tev$, which is a much less stringent constraint than in similar extra dimensional models of the Yukawa hierarchy.

Flavor Constraints on Split Fermion Models

We examine the contributions to rare processes that arise in models where the Standard Model fermions are localized at distinct points in compact extra dimensions. Tree-level flavor changing neutral current interactions for the Kaluza-Klein (KK) gauge field excitations are induced in such models, and hence strong constraints are thought to exist on the size of the additional dimensions. We find a general parameterization of the model which does not depend on any specific fermion geography and show that typical values of the parameters can reproduce the fermion hierarchy pattern. Using this parameterization, we reexamine the contributions to neutral meson mixing, rare meson decays, and single top-quark production in $e^+e^-$ collisions. We find that is it possible to evade the stringent bounds for natural regions of the parameters, while retaining finite separations between the fermion fields and without introducing a new hierarchy. The resulting limits on the size of the compact dimension can be as low as TeV$^{-1}$.
