Counting Minimal Lagrangians Via Mirzakhani Functions

We show that for $k>1$ the number of genus $k$ minimal Lagrangians with area at most $A$ in a product of hyperbolic surfaces grows on the order of $A^{6(k-1)}$, with an explicit leading constant given in terms of the Mirzakhani function, and we obtain a similar result for products of nonpositively curved surfaces. We also prove rigidity of the Lagrangian area spectrum, and obtain analogous counting results for products of a higher genus surface with a circle.

Asymptotically geodesic surfaces

A sequence of distinct closed surfaces in a hyperbolic 3-manifold M is asymptotically geodesic if their principal curvatures tend uniformly to zero. When M has finite volume, we show such sequences are always asymptotically dense in the 2-plane Grassmann bundle of M. When M has infinite volume and is geometrically finite, we show such sequences do not exist. As an application of the former, we obtain partial answers to the question of whether a negatively curved Riemannian 3-manifold that contains a sequence of asymptotically totally geodesic or totally umbilic surfaces must be hyperbolic. Finally, we give examples to show that if the dimension of M is greater than 3, the possible limiting behavior of asymptotically geodesic surfaces is less constrained than for totally geodesic surfaces.

Existence of Minimal Surfaces in Infinite Volume Hyperbolic 3-manifolds

The existence of embedded minimal surfaces in non-compact 3-manifolds remains a largely unresolved and challenging problem in geometry. In this paper, we address several open cases regarding the existence of finite-area, embedded, complete, minimal surfaces in infinite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Among other results, for doubly degenerate manifolds with bounded geometry, we prove a dichotomy: either every such manifold contains a closed minimal surface or there exists such a manifold admitting a foliation by closed minimal surfaces. We also construct the first examples of Schottky manifolds with closed minimal surfaces and demonstrate the existence of Schottky manifolds containing infinitely many closed minimal surfaces. Lastly, for hyperbolic 3-manifolds with rank-1 cusps, we show that a broad class of these manifolds must contain a finite-area, embedded, complete minimal surface.

Rigidity of the hyperbolic marked energy spectrum and entropy for $k$-surfaces

Labourie raised the question of determining the possible asymptotics for the growth rate of compact $k$-surfaces, counted according to energy, in negatively curved $3$-manifolds, indicating the possibility of a theory of thermodynamical formalism for this class of surfaces. Motivated by this question and by analogous results for the geodesic flow, we prove a number of results concerning the asymptotic behavior of high energy $k$-surfaces, especially in relation to the curvature of the ambient space. First, we determine a rigid upper bound for the growth rate of quasi-Fuchsian $k$-surfaces, counted according to energy, and with asymptotically round limit set, subject to a lower bound on the sectional curvature of the ambient space. We also study the marked energy spectrum for $k$-surfaces, proving a number of domination and rigidity theorems in this context. Finally, we show that the marked area and energy spectra for $k$-surfaces in $3$-dimensional manifolds of negative curvature are asymptotic if and only if the sectional curvature is constant.

Minimal Submanifolds and Waists of Locally Symmetric Spaces

We study the higher expansion properties of locally symmetric spaces, with a particular focus on octonionic hyperbolic manifolds. We show that codimension two minimal submanifolds of compact octonionic locally symmetric spaces must have large volume, at least linear in the volume of the ambient space. As a corollary we prove linear waist inequalities for octonionic hyperbolic manifolds in codimension two and construct the first locally symmetric examples of power-law systolic freedom. We also show that any codimension two submanifold of small volume can be homotoped to a lower dimensional set. We use this to prove that branched covers of octonionic hyperbolic manifolds are stable in the sense of Dinur-Meshulam and to establish a uniform lower bound on the non-abelian Cheeger constants of octonionic hyperbolic manifolds. In a more general setting, we prove that maps from locally symmetric spaces to low dimensional euclidean spaces admit fibers whose fundamental group has large exponent of growth. We show as a consequence that cocompact lattices in $SL_n(\mathbb{R})$ have property $ FA_{\lfloor n/8\rfloor-1}$: any action on a contractible $CAT(0)$ simplicial complex of dimension at most $ \lfloor n/8\rfloor -1$ has a global fixed point.

Finiteness of totally geodesic hypersurfaces

We prove that a closed negatively curved analytic Riemannian manifold that contains infinitely many totally geodesic hypersurfaces is isometric to an arithmetic hyperbolic manifold. Equivalently, any closed analytic Riemannian manifold with negative sectional curvature has only finitely many totally geodesic hypersurfaces, unless it has constant curvature.

Hyperbolic 3-manifolds with uniform spectral gap for coclosed 1-forms

We study two quantifications of being a homology sphere for hyperbolic 3-manifolds, one geometric and one topological: the spectral gap for the Laplacian on coclosed 1-forms and the size of the first torsion homology group. We first construct a sequence of closed hyperbolic integer homology spheres with volume tending to infinity and a uniform coclosed 1-form spectral gap. This answers a question asked by Lin--Lipnowski. We also find sequences of hyperbolic rational homology spheres with the same properties that geometrically converge to a tame limit manifold. Moreover, we show that any such sequence must have unbounded torsion homology growth. Finally we show that a sequence of closed hyperbolic rational homology 3-spheres with uniformly bounded rank and a uniform coclosed 1-form spectral gap must have torsion homology that grows exponentially in volume.

Uniqueness and non-uniqueness for the asymptotic Plateau problem in hyperbolic space

We prove several results on the number of solutions to the asymptotic Plateau problem in $\mathbb H^3$. Firstly we discuss criteria that ensure uniqueness. Given a Jordan curve $\Lambda$ in the asymptotic boundary of $\mathbb H^3$, we show that uniqueness of the minimal surfaces with asymptotic boundary $\Lambda$ is equivalent to uniqueness in the smaller class of stable minimal disks. Then we show that if a quasicircle (or more generally, a Jordan curve of finite width) $\Lambda$ is the asymptotic boundary of a minimal surface $\Sigma$ with principal curvatures less than or equal to 1 in absolute value, then uniqueness holds. In the direction of non-uniqueness, we construct an example of a quasicircle that is the asymptotic boundary of uncountably many pairwise distinct stable minimal disks.

Rigidity of Totally Geodesic Hypersurfaces in Negative Curvature

Let $M$ be a closed hyperbolic manifold containing a totally geodesic hypersurface $S$, and let $N$ be a closed Riemannian manifold homotopy equivalent to $M$ with sectional curvature bounded above by $-1$. Then it follows from the work of Besson-Courtois-Gallot that $\pi_1(S)$ can be represented by a hypersurface $S'$ in $N$ with volume less than or equal to that of $S$. We study the equality case: if $\pi_1(S)$ cannot be represented by a hypersurface $S'$ in $N$ with volume strictly smaller than that of $S$, then must $N$ be isometric to $M$? We show that many such $S$ are rigid in the sense that the answer to this question is positive. On the other hand, we construct examples of $S$ for which the answer is negative.

Foliated Plateau problems and asymptotic counting of surface subgroups

In [17], Labourie initiated the study of the dynamical properties of the space of $k$-surfaces, that is, suitably complete immersed surfaces of constant extrinsic curvature in $3$-dimensional manifolds, which he presented as a higher-dimensional analogue of the geodesic flow when the ambient manifold is negatively curved. In this paper, following the recent work [5] of Calegari--Marques--Neves, we study the asymptotic counting of surface subgroups in terms of areas of $k$-surfaces. We determine a lower bound, and we prove rigidity when this bound is achieved. Our work differs from that of [5] in two key respects. Firstly, we work with all quasi-Fuchsian subgroups as opposed to merely asymptotically Fuchsian ones. Secondly, as the proof of rigidity in [5] breaks down in the present case, we require a different approach. Following ideas outlined by Labourie in [19], we prove rigidity by solving a general foliated Plateau problem in Cartan--Hadamard manifolds. To this end, we build on Labourie's theory of $k$-surface dynamics, and propose a number of new constructions, conjectures and questions.

GHM Wavelet Transform for Deep Image Super Resolution

The GHM multi-level discrete wavelet transform is proposed as preprocessing for image super resolution with convolutional neural networks. Previous works perform analysis with the Haar wavelet only. In this work, 37 single-level wavelets are experimentally analyzed from Haar, Daubechies, Biorthogonal, Reverse Biorthogonal, Coiflets, and Symlets wavelet families. All single-level wavelets report similar results indicating that the convolutional neural network is invariant to choice of wavelet in a single-level filter approach. However, the GHM multi-level wavelet achieves higher quality reconstructions than the single-level wavelets. Three large data sets are used for the experiments: DIV2K, a dataset of textures, and a dataset of satellite images. The approximate high resolution images are compared using seven objective error measurements. A convolutional neural network based approach using wavelet transformed images has good results in the literature.

Minimal Surface Entropy and Average Area Ratio

On any closed hyperbolizable 3-manifold, we find a sharp relation between the minimal surface entropy (introduced by Calegari-Marques-Neves) and the average area ratio (introduced by Gromov), and we show that, among metrics g with scalar curvature greater than or equal to -6, the former is maximized by the hyperbolic metric. One corollary is to solve a conjecture of Gromov regarding the average area ratio. Our proofs use Ricci flow with surgery and laminar measures invariant under a PSL(2,R)-action.

Beyond almost Fuchsian space

An almost Fuchsian manifold is a hyperbolic 3-manifold of the type $S\times \mathbb{R}$ which admits a closed minimal surface (homeomorphic to $S$) with the maximum principal curvature $\lambda_0 <1$, while a weakly almost Fuchsian manifold is of the same type but it admits a closed minimal surface with $\lambda_0 <= 1$. We first prove that any weakly almost Fuchsian manifold is geometrically finite, and we construct a Canary-Storm type compactification for the weakly almost Fuchsian space. We use this to prove uniform upper bounds on the volume of the convex core and Hausdorff dimension for the limit set of weakly almost Fuchsian manifolds, and to prove a gap theorem for the principal curvatures of minimal surfaces in hyperbolic 3-manifolds that fiber over the circle. We also give examples of quasi-Fuchsian manifolds which admit unique stable minimal surfaces without being weakly almost Fuchsian.

Area, Scalar Curvature, and Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds

Let $M$ be a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold that admits no infinitesimal conformally-flat deformations. Examples of such manifolds were constructed by Kapovich. Then if $g$ is a Riemannian metric on $M$ with scalar curvature greater than or equal to $-6$, we find lower bounds for the areas of stable immersed minimal surfaces $\Sigma$ in $M$. Our bounds improve the closer $\Sigma$ is to being homotopic to a totally geodesic surface in the hyperbolic metric. We also consider a functional introduced by Calegari-Marques-Neves that is defined by an asymptotic count of minimal surfaces in $(M,g)$. We show this functional to be uniquely maximized, over all metrics of scalar curvature greater than or equal to $-6$, by the hyperbolic metric. Our proofs use the Ricci flow with surgery.

Deformations of Totally Geodesic Foliations and Minimal Surfaces in Negatively Curved 3-Manifolds

Let $g_t$ be a smooth 1-parameter family of negatively curved metrics on a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ starting at the hyperbolic metric. We construct foliations of the Grassmann bundle $Gr_2(M)$ of tangent 2-planes whose leaves are (lifts of) minimal surfaces in $(M,g_t)$. These foliations are deformations of the foliation of $Gr_2(M)$ by (lifts of) totally geodesic planes projected down from the universal cover $\mathbb{H}^3$. Our construction continues to work as long as the sum of the squares of the principal curvatures of the (projections to $M$) of the leaves remains pointwise smaller in magnitude than the ambient Ricci curvature in the normal direction. In the second part of the paper we give some applications and construct negatively curved metrics for which $Gr_2(M)$ cannot admit a foliation as above.
