The subgroup structure of pseudo-reductive groups

Let $k$ be a field. We investigate the relationship between subgroups of a pseudo-reductive $k$-group $G$ and its maximal reductive quotient $G'$, with applications to the subgroup structure of $G$. Let $k'/k$ be the minimal field of definition for the geometric unipotent radical of $G$, and let $\pi':G_{k'} \to G'$ be the quotient map. We first characterise those smooth subgroups $H$ of $G$ for which $\pi'(H_{k'})=G'$. We next consider the following questions: given a subgroup $H'$ of $G'$, does there exist a subgroup $H$ of $G$ such that $\pi'(H_{k'})=H'$, and if $H'$ is smooth can we find such a $H$ that is smooth? We find sufficient conditions for a positive answer to these questions. In general there are various obstructions to the existence of such a subgroup $H$, which we illustrate with several examples. Finally, we apply these results to relate the maximal smooth subgroups of $G$ with those of $G'$.

Uniform boundedness for algebraic groups and Lie groups

Let $G$ be a semisimple linear algebraic group over a field $k$ and let $G^+(k)$ be the subgroup generated by the subgroups $R_u(Q)(k)$, where $Q$ ranges over all the minimal $k$-parabolic subgroups $Q$ of $G$. We prove that if $G^+(k)$ is bounded then it is uniformly bounded. Under extra assumptions we get explicit bounds for $\Delta(G^+(k))$: we prove that if $k$ is algebraically closed then $\Delta(G^+(k))\leq 4\, {\rm rank}\,G$, and if $G$ is split over $k$ then $\Delta(G^+(k))\leq 28\, {\rm rank}\,G$. We deduce some analogous results for real and complex semisimple Lie groups.

Overgroups of regular unipotent elements in reductive groups

We study reductive subgroups $H$ of a reductive linear algebraic group $G$ -- possibly non-connected -- such that $H$ contains a regular unipotent element of $G$. We show that under suitable hypotheses, such subgroups are $G$-irreducible in the sense of Serre. This generalizes results of Malle, Testerman and Zalesski. We obtain analogous results for Lie algebras and for finite groups of Lie type. Our proofs are short, conceptual and uniform.

Strong and uniform boundedness of groups

A group G is called bounded if every conjugation-invariant norm on G has finite diameter. We introduce various strengthenings of this property and investigate them in several classes of groups including semisimple Lie groups, arithmetic groups and linear algebraic groups. We provide applications to Hamiltonian dynamics.

Evolving A-Type Artificial Neural Networks

We investigate Turing's notion of an A-type artificial neural network. We study a refinement of Turing's original idea, motivated by work of Teuscher, Bull, Preen and Copeland. Our A-types can process binary data by accepting and outputting sequences of binary vectors; hence we can associate a function to an A-type, and we say the A-type {\em represents} the function. There are two modes of data processing: clamped and sequential. We describe an evolutionary algorithm, involving graph-theoretic manipulations of A-types, which searches for A-types representing a given function. The algorithm uses both mutation and crossover operators. We implemented the algorithm and applied it to three benchmark tasks. We found that the algorithm performed much better than a random search. For two out of the three tasks, the algorithm with crossover performed better than a mutation-only version.

Definable equivalence relations and zeta functions of groups

We prove that the theory of the $p$-adics ${\mathbb Q}_p$ admits elimination of imaginaries provided we add a sort for ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb Q}_p)/{\rm GL}_n({\mathbb Z}_p)$ for each $n$. We also prove that the elimination of imaginaries is uniform in $p$. Using $p$-adic and motivic integration, we deduce the uniform rationality of certain formal zeta functions arising from definable equivalence relations. This also yields analogous results for definable equivalence relations over local fields of positive characteristic. The appendix contains an alternative proof, using cell decomposition, of the rationality (for fixed $p$) of these formal zeta functions that extends to the subanalytic context. As an application, we prove rationality and uniformity results for zeta functions obtained by counting twist isomorphism classes of irreducible representations of finitely generated nilpotent groups; these are analogous to similar results of Grunewald, Segal and Smith and of du Sautoy and Grunewald for subgroup zeta functions of finitely generated nilpotent groups.
