Current-induced CrI3 surface spin-flop transition probed by proximity magnetoresistance in Pt

By exploiting proximity coupling, we probe the spin state of the surface layers of CrI3, a van der Waals magnetic semiconductor, by measuring the induced magnetoresistance (MR) of Pt in Pt/CrI3 nano-devices. We fabricate the devices with clean and stable interfaces by placing freshly exfoliated CrI3 flake atop pre-patterned thin Pt strip and encapsulating the Pt/CrI3 heterostructure with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) in a protected environment. In devices consisting of a wide range of CrI3 thicknesses (30 to 150 nm), we observe that an abrupt upward jump in Pt MR emerge at a 2 T magnetic field applied perpendicularly to the layers when the current density exceeds 2.5x10^10 A/m2, followed by a gradual decrease over a range of 5 T. These distinct MR features suggest a spin-flop transition which reveals strong antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling in the surface layers of CrI3. We study the current dependence by holding the Pt/CrI3 sample at approximately the same temperature to exclude the joule heating effect, and find that the MR jump increases with the current density, indicating a spin current origin. This spin current effect provides a new route to control spin configurations in insulating antiferromagnets, which is potentially useful for spintronic applications.

Input Perturbation: A New Paradigm between Central and Local Differential Privacy

Traditionally, there are two models on differential privacy: the central model and the local model. The central model focuses on the machine learning model and the local model focuses on the training data. In this paper, we study the \textit{input perturbation} method in differentially private empirical risk minimization (DP-ERM), preserving privacy of the central model. By adding noise to the original training data and training with the `perturbed data', we achieve ($ε$,$δ$)-differential privacy on the final model, along with some kind of privacy on the original data. We observe that there is an interesting connection between the local model and the central model: the perturbation on the original data causes the perturbation on the gradient, and finally the model parameters. This observation means that our method builds a bridge between local and central model, protecting the data, the gradient and the model simultaneously, which is more superior than previous central methods. Detailed theoretical analysis and experiments show that our method achieves almost the same (or even better) performance as some of the best previous central methods with more protections on privacy, which is an attractive result. Moreover, we extend our method to a more general case: the loss function satisfies the Polyak-Lojasiewicz condition, which is more general than strong convexity, the constraint on the loss function in most previous work.

Coexistence of Magnetic Orders in Two-Dimensional Magnet CrI$_3$

The magnetic properties in two-dimensional van der Waals materials depend sensitively on structure. CrI3, as an example, has been recently demonstrated to exhibit distinct magnetic properties depending on the layer thickness and stacking order. Bulk CrI3 is ferromagnetic (FM) with a Curie temperature of 61 K and a rhombohedral layer stacking, while few-layer CrI3 has a layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase with a lower ordering temperature of 45 K and a monoclinic stacking. In this work, we use cryogenic magnetic force microscopy to investigate CrI3 flakes in the intermediate thickness range (25 - 200 nm) and find that the two types of magnetic orders hence the stacking orders can coexist in the same flake, with a layer of ~13 nm at each surface being in the layered AFM phase similar to few-layer CrI3 and the rest in the bulk FM phase. The switching of the bulk moment proceeds through a remnant state with nearly compensated magnetic moment along the c-axis, indicating formation of c-axis domains allowed by a weak interlayer coupling strength in the rhombohedral phase. Our results provide a comprehensive picture on the magnetism in CrI3 and point to the possibility of engineering magnetic heterostructures within the same material.

Ott-Antonsen reduction for the non-Abelian Kuramoto model on the 3-sphere

We are interested in low-dimensional dynamics in an ensemble of coupled nonidentical generalized oscillators on the 3-sphere. The system of governing equations for such an ensemble is referred to as non-Abelian Kuramoto model in the literature. We establish an analogue (or an extension) of the Ott-Antonsen (OA) result for this model.

Probing Magnetism in Insulating Cr2Ge2Te6 by Induced Anomalous Hall Effect in Pt

Two-dimensional ferromagnet Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT) is so resistive below its Curie temperature that probing its magnetism by electrical transport becomes extremely difficult. By forming heterostructures with Pt, however, we observe clear anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in 5 nm thick Pt deposited on thin (< 50 nm) exfoliated flakes of CGT. The AHE hysteresis loops persist to ~ 60 K, which matches well to the Curie temperature of CGT obtained from the bulk magnetization measurements. The slanted AHE loops with a narrow opening indicate magnetic domain formation, which is confirmed by low-temperature magnetic force microscopy (MFM) imaging. These results clearly demonstrate that CGT imprints its magnetization in the AHE signal of the Pt layer. Density functional theory calculations of CGT/Pt heterostructures suggest that the induced ferromagnetism in Pt may be primarily responsible for the observed AHE. Our results establish a powerful way of investigating magnetism in 2D insulating ferromagnets which can potentially work for monolayer devices.

Two delays induce Hopf bifurcation and double Hopf bifurcation in a diffusive Leslie-Gower predator-prey system

In this paper, the dynamics of a modified Leslie-Gower predator-prey system with two delays and diffusion is considered. By calculating stability switching curves, the stability of positive equilibrium and the existence of Hopf bifurcation and double Hopf bifurcation are investigated on the parametric plane of two delays. Taking two time delays as bifurcation parameters, the normal form on the center manifold near the double Hopf bifurcation point is derived, and the unfoldings near the critical points are given. Finally, we obtain the complex dynamics near the double Hopf bifurcation point, including the existence of quasi-periodic solutions on a 2-torus, quasi-periodic solutions on a 3-torus, and strange attractors.

Double Hopf bifurcation in delayed reaction-diffusion systems

Double Hopf bifurcation analysis can be used to reveal some complicated dynamical behavior in a dynamical system, such as the existence or coexistence of periodic orbits, quasi-periodic orbits, or even chaos. In this paper, an algorithm for deriving the normal form near a codimension-two double Hopf bifurcation of a reaction-diffusion system with time delay and Neumann boundary condition is rigorously established, by employing the center manifold reduction technique and the normal form method. We find that the dynamical behavior near bifurcation points are proved to be governed by twelve distinct unfolding systems. Two examples are performed to illustrate our results: for a stage-structured epidemic model, we find that double Hopf bifurcation appears when varying the diffusion rate and time delay, and two stable spatially inhomogeneous periodic oscillations are proved to coexist near the bifurcation point; in a diffusive predator-prey system, we theoretically proved that quasi-periodic orbits exist on two- or three-torus near a double Hopf bifurcation point, which will break down after slight perturbation, leaving the system a strange attractor.

Hopf-Hopf bifurcation and chaotic attractors in a delayed diffusive predator-prey model with fear effect

We investigate a diffusive predator-prey model by incorporating the fear effect into prey population, since the fear of predators could visibly reduce the reproduction of prey. By introducing the mature delay as bifurcation parameter, we find this makes the predator-prey system more complicated and usually induces Hopf and Hopf-Hopf bifurcations. The formulas determining the properties of Hopf and Hopf-Hopf bifurcations by computing the normal form on the center manifold are given. Near the Hopf-Hopf bifurcation point we give the detailed bifurcation set by investigating the universal unfoldings. Moreover, we show the existence of quasi-periodic orbits on three-torus near a Hopf-Hopf bifurcation point, leading to a strange attractor when further varying the parameter. We also find the existence of Bautin bifurcation numerically, then simulate the coexistence of stable constant stationary solution and periodic solution near this Bautin bifurcation point.

Bautin bifurcation in delayed reaction-diffusion systems with application to the Segel-Jackson model

In this paper, we present an algorithm for deriving the normal forms of Bautin bifurcations in reaction-diffusion systems with time delays and Neumann boundary conditions. On the center manifold near a Bautin bifurcation, the first and second Lyapunov coefficients are calculated explicitly, which completely determine the dynamical behavior near the bifurcation point. As an example, the Segel-Jackson predator-prey model is studied. Near the Bautin bifurcation we find the existence of fold bifurcation of periodic orbits, as well as subcritical and supercritical Hopf bifurcations. Both theoretical and numerical results indicate that solutions with small (large) initial conditions converge to stable periodic orbits (diverge to infinity).

Imaging Quantum Spin Hall Edges in Monolayer WTe2

A two-dimensional (2D) topological insulator (TI) exhibits the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect, in which topologically protected spin-polarized conducting channels exist at the sample edges. Experimental signatures of the QSH effect have recently been reported for the first time in an atomically thin material, monolayer WTe2. Electrical transport measurements on exfoliated samples and scanning tunneling spectroscopy on epitaxially grown monolayer islands signal the existence of edge modes with conductance approaching the quantized value. Here, we directly image the local conductivity of monolayer WTe2 devices using microwave impedance microscopy, establishing beyond doubt that conduction is indeed strongly localized to the physical edges at temperatures up to 77 K and above. The edge conductivity shows no gap as a function of gate voltage, ruling out trivial conduction due to band bending or in-gap states, and is suppressed by magnetic field as expected. Interestingly, we observe additional conducting lines and rings within most samples which can be explained by edge states following boundaries between topologically trivial and non-trivial regions. These observations will be critical for interpreting and improving the properties of devices incorporating WTe2 or other air-sensitive 2D materials. At the same time, they reveal the robustness of the QSH channels and the potential to engineer and pattern them by chemical or mechanical means in the monolayer material platform.

Diffusion-induced spatio-temporal oscillations in an epidemic model with two delays

We investigate a diffusive, stage-structured epidemic model with the maturation delay and freely-moving delay. Choosing delays and diffusive rates as bifurcation parameters, the only possible way to destabilize the endemic equilibrium is through Hopf bifurcation. The normal forms of Hopf bifurcations on the center manifold are calculated, and explicit formulae determining the criticality of bifurcations are derived. There are two different kinds of stable oscillations near the first bifurcation: on one hand, we theoretically prove that when the diffusion rate of infected immature individuals is sufficiently small or sufficiently large, the first branch of Hopf bifurcating solutions is always spatially homogeneous; on the other, fixing this diffusion rate at an appropriate size, stable oscillations with different spatial profiles are observed, and the conditions to guarantee the existence of such solutions are given. These phenomena are investigated by calculating the corresponding eigenfunction of the Laplacian at the first Hopf bifurcation point.

Multiple-parameter bifurcation analysis in a Kuramoto model with time delay and distributed shear

In this paper, time delay effect and distributed shear are considered in the Kuramoto model. On the Ott-Antonsen's manifold, through analyzing the associated characteristic equation of the reduced functional differential equation, the stability boundary of the incoherent state is derived in multiple-parameter space. Moreover, very rich dynamical behavior such as stability switches inducing synchronization switches can occur in this equation. With the loss of stability, Hopf bifurcating coherent states arise, and the criticality of Hopf bifurcations is determined by applying the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem. On one hand, theoretical analysis indicates that the width of shear distribution and time delay can both eliminate the synchronization then lead the Kuramoto model to incoherence. On the other, time delay can induce several coexisting coherent states. Finally, some numerical simulations are given to support the obtained results where several bifurcation diagrams are drawn, and the effect of time delay and shear is discussed.

Codimension-two Bifurcations Induce Hysteresis Behavior and Multistabilities in Delay-coupled Kuramoto Oscillators

Hysteresis phenomena and multistability play crucial roles in the dynamics of coupled oscillators, which are now interpreted from the point of view of codimension-two bifurcations. On the Ott-Antonsen's manifold, complete bifurcation sets of delay-coupled Kuramoto model are derived regarding coupling strength and delay as bifurcation parameters. It is rigorously proved that the system must undergo Bautin bifurcations for some critical values, thus there always exists saddle-node bifurcation of periodic solutions inducing hysteresis loop. With the aid of center manifold reduction method and the Matlab Package DDE-Biftool, the location of Bautin and double Hopf points and detailed dynamics are theoretically determined. We find that, near these critical points, at most four coherent states (two of which are stable) and a stable incoherent state may coexist, and that the system undergoes Neimark-Sacker bifurcation of periodic solutions. Finally, the clear scenarios about the synchronous transition in delayed Kuramoto model are depicted.

An approach to normal forms of Kuramoto model with distributed delays and the effect of minimal delay

Heterogeneous delays with positive lower bound (gap) are taken into consideration in Kuramoto oscillators. We first establish a perturbation technique, by which universal normal forms and detailed dynamical behavior of this model can be obtained easily. Theoretically, a hysteresis loop is found near the subcritically bifurcated coherent state on the Ott-Antonsen's manifold. For Gamma distributed delay with fixed variance and mean, we find large gap destroys the loop and significantly increases in the number of coexisted coherent attractors. This result is also explained in the viewpoint of excess kurtosis.

Rapidly reconfigurable radio-frequency arbitrary waveforms synthesized on a CMOS photonic chip

Photonic methods of radio-frequency waveform generation and processing provide performance and flexibility over electronic methods due to the ultrawide bandwidth offered by the optical carriers. However, they suffer from lack of integration and slow reconfiguration speed. Here we propose an architecture of integrated photonic RF waveform generation and processing, and implement it on a silicon chip fabricated in a semiconductor manufacturing foundry. Our device can generate programmable RF bursts or continuous waveforms with only the light source, electrical drives/controls and detectors being off chip. It turns on and off an individual pulse in the RF burst within 4 nanoseconds, achieving a reconfiguration speed three orders of magnitude faster than thermal tuning. The on-chip optical delay elements offers an integrated approach to accurately manipulate individual RF waveform features without constrains set by the speed and timing jitter of electronics, and should find broad applications ranging from high-speed wireless to defense electronics.

Nonresonant Hopf-Hopf bifurcation and a chaotic attractor in neutral functional differential equations

Nonresonant Hopf-Hopf singularity in neutral functional differential equation (NFDE) is considered. An algorithm for calculating the third-order normal form is established by using the formal adjoint theory, center manifold theorem and the traditional normal form method for RFDE. Van der Pol's equation with extended delay feedback is studied as an example. The unfoldings near the Hopf-Hopf bifurcation point is given by applying this algorithm. Periodic solutions, quasi-periodic solutions are found via theoretical bifurcation diagram and numerical illustrations. The Hopf-Hopf bifurcation diagram indicates the possible existence of a chaotic attractor, which is confirmed by a sequence of simulations.

Priority-Aware Private Matching Schemes for Proximity-Based Mobile Social Networks

The rapid developments of mobile devices and online social networks have resulted in increasing attention to Mobile Social Networking (MSN). The explosive growth of mobile-connected and location-aware devices makes it possible and meaningful to do the Proximity-based Mobile Social Networks (PMSNs). Users can discover and make new social interactions easily with physical-proximate mobile users through WiFi/Bluetooth interfaces embedded in their smartphones. However, users enjoy these conveniences at the cost of their growing privacy concerns. To address this problem, we propose a suit of priority-aware private matching schemes to privately match the similarity with potential friends in the vicinity. Unlike most existing work, our proposed priority-aware matching scheme (P-match) achieves the privacy goal by combining the commutative encryption function and the Tanimoto similarity coefficient which considers both the number of common attributes between users as well as the corresponding priorities on each common attribute. Further, based on the newly constructed similarity function which takes the ratio of attributes matched over all the input set into consideration, we design an enhanced version to deal with some potential attacks such as unlimitedly inputting the attribute set on either the initiator side or the responder side, etc. Finally, our proposed E-match avoids the heavy cryptographic operations and improves the system performance significantly by employing a novel use of the Bloom filter. The security and communication/computation overhead of our schemes are thoroughly analyzed and evaluated via detailed simulations and implementation.

E-field measurement of pulse line ion accelerator

The E-field of pulse line ion accelerator (PLIA) is unique with high frequency (~MHz), large magnitude (~MV/m) and limited measuring space (~cm). The integrated optical E-field sensor (IOES) has remarkable advantages and has been used for PLIA E-field measurement. Firstly, the transfer function of IOES has been calibrated to ensure the measurement accuracy. And the time-domain response illustrates that the sensor has a fast dynamic performance to effectively follow a 4 ns rising edge. Then, the E-field distribution along the axis and near the insulator surface of PLIA was measured, showing that the propagation of E-field is almost lossless and E-field near the insulation surface is about 1.1 times larger than that along the axis, which is in accordance with the simulation result.
