Realization problems for diffeomorphism groups

We discuss recent results and open questions on the broad theme of (Nielsen) realization problems. Beyond realizing subgroups of mapping class groups, there are many other natural instances where one can ask if a surjection from a group of diffeomorphisms of a manifold to another group admits a section over particular subgroups. This survey includes many open problems, and some short proofs of new results that are illustrative of key techniques; drawing attention to parallels between problems arising in different areas.

Characteristic classes of fiberwise branched surface bundles via arithmetic

This paper is about cohomology of mapping class groups from the perspective of arithmetic groups. For a closed surface $S$ of genus $g$, the mapping class group $Mod(S)$ admits a well-known arithmetic quotient $Mod(S)\rightarrow Sp(2g, Z)$, under which the stable cohomology of $Sp(2g,Z)$ pulls back to algebra generated by the odd MMM classes of $Mod(S)$. We extend this example to other arithmetic groups associated to mapping class groups and explore some of the consequences for surface bundles. For $G=Z/mZ$ and for a regular $G$-cover $S\rightarrow S'$ (possibly branched), a finite index subgroup $Γ< Mod( S')$ admits a homomorphism to an arithmetic group $Sp^G<Sp(2g,Z)$. The induced map on cohomology can be understood using index theory. To this end, we describe a families version of the $G$-index theorem for the signature operator and apply this to (i) compute $H^2(Sp^G;Q)\rightarrow H^2(Γ;Q)$, (ii) re-derive Hirzebruch's formula for signature of a branched cover (in the case of a surface bundle), (iii) compute Toledo invariants of surface group representations to $SU(p,q)$ arising from Atiyah--Kodaira constructions, and (iv) describe how classes in $H^*(Sp^G;Q)$ give equivariant cobordism invariants for surface bundles with a fiberwise $G$ action, following Church--Farb--Thibault.

On the non-realizability of braid groups by diffeomorphisms

For every compact surface $S$ of finite type (possibly with boundary components but without punctures), we show that when $n$ is sufficiently large there is no lift $σ$ of the surface braid group $B_n(S)$ to $\operatorname{Diff}(S,n)$, the group of $C^1$ diffeomorphisms preserving $n$ marked points and restricting to the identity on the boundary. Our methods are applied to give a new proof of Morita's non-lifting theorem in the best possible range. These techniques extend to the more general setting of spaces of codimension-$2$ embeddings, and we obtain corresponding results for spherical motion groups, including the string motion group.

Hyperbolic groups with boundary an n-dimensional Sierpinski space

For n>6, we show that if G is a torsion-free hyperbolic group whose visual boundary is an (n-2)-dimensional Sierpinski space, then G=π_1(W) for some aspherical n-manifold W with nonempty boundary. Concerning the converse, we construct, for each n>3, examples of aspherical manifolds with boundary, whose fundamental group G is hyperbolic, but with visual boundary not homeomorphic to an (n-2)-dimensional Sierpinski space.

Cohomological obstructions to Nielsen realization

For a based manifold (M,*), the question of whether the surjection Diff(M,*) \rightarrow π_0 Diff(M,*) admits a section is an example of a Nielsen realization problem. This question is related to a question about flat connections on M-bundles and is meaningful for M of any dimension. In dimension 2, Bestvina-Church-Souto showed a section does not exist when M is closed and has genus g\ge 2. Their techniques are cohomological and certain aspects are specific to surfaces. We give new cohomological techniques to generalize their result to many locally symmetric manifolds. The main tools include Chern-Weil theory, Milnor-Wood inequalities, and Margulis superrigidity.

Pontryagin classes of locally symmetric manifolds

In this note we compute low degree rational Pontryagin classes for every closed locally symmetric manifold of noncompact type. In particular, we answer the question: Which locally symmetric M have at least one nonzero Pontryagin class?

Duality properties of indicatrices of knots

The bridge index and superbridge index of a knot are important invariants in knot theory. We define the bridge map of a knot conformation, which is closely related to these two invariants, and interpret it in terms of the tangent indicatrix of the knot conformation. Using the concepts of dual and derivative curves of spherical curves as introduced by Arnold, we show that the graph of the bridge map is the union of the binormal indicatrix, its antipodal curve, and some number of great circles. Similarly, we define the inflection map of a knot conformation, interpret it in terms of the binormal indicatrix, and express its graph in terms of the tangent indicatrix. This duality relationship is also studied for another dual pair of curves, the normal and Darboux indicatrices of a knot conformation. The analogous concepts are defined and results are derived for stick knots.

Planar and spherical stick indices of knots

The stick index of a knot is the least number of line segments required to build the knot in space. We define two analogous 2-dimensional invariants, the planar stick index, which is the least number of line segments in the plane to build a projection, and the spherical stick index, which is the least number of great circle arcs to build a projection on the sphere. We find bounds on these quantities in terms of other knot invariants, and give planar stick and spherical stick constructions for torus knots and for compositions of trefoils. In particular, unlike most knot invariants,we show that the spherical stick index distinguishes between the granny and square knots, and that composing a nontrivial knot with a second nontrivial knot need not increase its spherical stick index.
