Random walks and quadratic number fields

We establish a novel type of connection between random walks and analytic number theory. Working with a random walk on the circle group $\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$ in which each step is a random integer multiple of a given quadratic irrational $\alpha$, we show that the rate of convergence to uniformity in the quadratic Wasserstein metric (also known as the periodic $L^2$ discrepancy) is governed by deep arithmetic invariants of the ring of algebraic integers of the real quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\alpha)$, such as fundamental units and special values of zeta functions.

Smoothing inequalities for transport metrics in compact spaces

We prove general upper estimates for the distance between two Borel probability measures in Wasserstein metric in terms of the Fourier transforms of the measures. We work in compact manifolds including the torus, the Euclidean unit sphere, compact Lie groups and compact homogeneous spaces, and treat the Wasserstein metric $W_p$ in the full range $1 \le p \le \infty$ for the first time. The proofs are based on a comparison between the Wasserstein metric and a dual Sobolev norm, Riesz transform estimates and Hausdorff--Young inequalities on compact manifolds. As an application, we show that spherical designs are optimally close to the uniform measure on the sphere in Wasserstein metric.

Equidistribution of continued fraction convergents in $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z}_m)$ with an application to local discrepancy

Consider the sequence of continued fraction convergents $p_n/q_n$ to a random irrational number. We study the distribution of the sequences $p_n \pmod{m}$ and $q_n \pmod{m}$ with a fixed modulus $m$, and more generally, the distribution of the $2 \times 2$ matrix with entries $p_{n-1}, p_n, q_{n-1}, q_n \pmod{m}$. Improving the strong law of large numbers due to Szüsz, Moeckel, Jager and Liardet, we establish the central limit theorem and the law of the iterated logarithm, as well as the weak and the almost sure invariance principles. As an application, we find the limit distribution of the maximum and the minimum of the Birkhoff sum for the irrational rotation with the indicator of an interval as test function. We also compute the normalizing constant in a classical limit law for the same Birkhoff sum due to Kesten, and dispel a misconception about its dependence on the test interval.

Limit laws for cotangent and Diophantine sums

Limit laws for ergodic averages with a power singularity over circle rotations were first proved by Sinai and Ulcigrai, as well as Dolgopyat and Fayad. In this paper, we prove limit laws with an estimate for the rate of convergence for the sum $\sum_{n=1}^N f(n α)/n^p$ in terms of a $1$-periodic function $f$ with a power singularity of order $p \ge 1$ at integers. Our results apply in particular to cotangent sums related to Dedekind sums, and to sums of reciprocals of fractional parts, which appear in multiplicative Diophantine approximation. The main tools are Schmidt's method in metric Diophantine approximation, the Gauss-Kuzmin problem and the theory of $ψ$-mixing random variables.

A conjecture of Zagier and the value distribution of quantum modular forms

In his influential paper on quantum modular forms, Zagier developed a conjectural framework describing the behavior of certain quantum knot invariants under the action of the modular group on their arguments. More precisely, when $J_{K,0}$ denotes the colored Jones polynomial of a knot $K$, Zagier's modularity conjecture describes the asymptotics of the quotient $J_{K,0} (e^{2 πi γ(x)}) / J_{K,0}(e^{2 πi x})$ as $x \to \infty$ along rationals with bounded denominators, where $γ\in \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$. This problem is most accessible for the figure-eight knot $4_1$, where the colored Jones polynomial has a simple explicit expression in terms of the $q$-Pochhammer symbol. Zagier also conjectured that the function $h(x) = \log (J_{4_1,0} (e^{2 πi x}) / J_{4_1,0}(e^{2 πi /x}))$ can be extended to a function on $\mathbb{R}$ which is continuous at irrationals. In the present paper, we prove Zagier's continuity conjecture for all irrationals for which the sequence of partial quotients in the continued fraction expansion is unbounded. In particular, the continuity conjecture holds almost everywhere on the real line. We also establish a smooth approximation of $h$, uniform over all rationals, in accordance with the modularity conjecture. As an application, we find the limit distribution (after a suitable centering and rescaling) of $\log J_{4_1,0}(e^{2 πi x})$, when $x$ ranges over all reduced rationals in $(0,1)$ with denominator at most $N$, as $N \to \infty$, thereby confirming a conjecture of Bettin and Drappeau.

Pointwise and correlation bounds on Dedekind sums over small subgroups

We obtain new bounds, pointwisely and on average, for Dedekind sums $\mathsf{s}(λ,p)$ modulo a prime $p$ with $λ$ of small multiplicative order $d$ modulo $p$. Assuming the infinitude of Mersenne primes, the range of our results is optimal. Moreover, we relate high moments of $L(1,χ)$ over subgroups of characters to some correlations of Dedekind sums and use our recent results to study these correlations.

Riesz Energy, $L^2$ Discrepancy, and Optimal Transport of Determinantal Point Processes on the Sphere and the Flat Torus

Determinantal point processes exhibit an inherent repulsive behavior, thus providing examples of very evenly distributed point sets on manifolds. In this paper, we study the so-called harmonic ensemble, defined in terms of Laplace eigenfunctions on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$ and the flat torus $\mathbb{T}^d$, and the so-called spherical ensemble on $\mathbb{S}^2$, which originates in random matrix theory. We extend results of Beltrán, Marzo and Ortega-Cerdà on the Riesz $s$-energy of the harmonic ensemble to the nonsingular regime $s<0$, and as a corollary find the expected value of the spherical cap $L^2$ discrepancy via the Stolarsky invariance principle. We find the expected value of the $L^2$ discrepancy with respect to axis-parallel boxes and Euclidean balls of the harmonic ensemble on $\mathbb{T}^d$. We also show that the spherical ensemble and the harmonic ensemble on $\mathbb{S}^2$ and $\mathbb{T}^2$ with $N$ points attain the optimal rate $N^{-1/2}$ in expectation in the Wasserstein metric $W_2$, in contrast to i.i.d. random points, which are known to lose a factor of $(\log N)^{1/2}$.

Eigenvalues of random matrices from compact classical groups in Wasserstein metric

The circular unitary ensemble and its generalizations concern a random matrix from a compact classical group $\mathrm{U}(N)$, $\mathrm{SU}(N)$, $\mathrm{O}(N)$, $\mathrm{SO}(N)$ or $\mathrm{USp}(N)$ distributed according to the Haar measure. The eigenvalues are known to be very evenly distributed on the unit circle. In this paper, we study the distance from the empirical measure of the eigenvalues to uniformity in the quadratic Wasserstein metric $W_2$. After finding the exact value of the expected value and the variance, we deduce a limit law for the square of the Wasserstein distance. We reformulate our results in terms of the $L^2$ average of the number of eigenvalues in circular arcs, and also in terms of the characteristic polynomial of the matrix on the unit circle.

On the distribution of partial quotients of reduced fractions with fixed denominator

In this paper, we study distributional properties of the sequence of partial quotients in the continued fraction expansion of fractions $a/N$, where $N$ is fixed and $a$ runs through the set of mod $N$ residue classes which are coprime with $N$. Our methods cover statistics such as the sum of partial quotients, the maximal partial quotient, the empirical distribution of partial quotients, Dedekind sums, and much more. We prove a sharp concentration inequality for the sum of partial quotients, and sharp tail estimates for the maximal partial quotient and for Dedekind sums, all matching the tail behavior in the limit laws which are known under an extra averaging over the set of possible denominators $N$. We show that the distribution of partial quotients of reduced fractions with fixed denominator gives a very good fit to the Gauss-Kuzmin distribution. As corollaries we establish the existence of reduced fractions with a small sum of partial quotients resp. a small maximal partial quotient.

Remarks on sums of reciprocals of fractional parts

The Diophantine sums $\sum_{n=1}^N \| n α\|^{-1}$ and $\sum_{n=1}^N n^{-1} \| n α\|^{-1}$ appear in many different areas including the ergodic theory of circle rotations, lattice point counting and random walks, often in connection with Fourier analytic methods. Beresnevich, Haynes and Velani gave estimates for these and related sums in terms of the Diophantine approximation properties of $α$ that are sharp up to a constant factor. In the present paper, we remove the constant factor gap between the upper and the lower estimates, and thus find the precise asymptotics for a wide class of irrationals. Our methods apply to sums with the fractional part instead of the distance from the nearest integer function, and to sums involving shifts $\| n α+ β\|$ as well. We also comment on a higher dimensional generalization of these sums.

Limit laws of maximal Birkhoff sums for circle rotations via quantum modular forms

In this paper, we show how quantum modular forms naturally arise in the ergodic theory of circle rotations. Working with the classical Birkhoff sum $S_N(α)=\sum_{n=1}^N (\{ n α\}-1/2)$, we prove that the maximum and the minimum as well as certain exponential moments of $S_N(r)$ as functions of $r \in \mathbb{Q}$ satisfy a direct analogue of Zagier's continuity conjecture, originally stated for a quantum invariant of the figure-eight knot. As a corollary, we find the limit distribution of $\max_{0 \le N<M} S_N(α)$ and $\min_{0 \le N<M} S_N(α)$ with a random $α\in [0,1]$.

On the distribution of Sudler products and Birkhoff sums for the irrational rotation

We study the value distribution of the Sudler product $\prod_{n=1}^N |2 \sin (πn α)|$ and the Diophantine product $\prod_{n=1}^N (2e\| n α\|)$ for various irrational $α$, as $N$ ranges in a long interval of integers. At badly approximable irrationals these products exhibit strong concentration around $N^{1/2}$, and at certain quadratic irrationals they even satisfy a central limit theorem. In contrast, at almost every $α$ we observe an interesting anticoncentration phenomenon when the typical and the extreme values are of the same order of magnitude. Our methods are equally suited for the value distribution of Birkhoff sums $\sum_{n=1}^N f(n α)$ for circle rotations. Using Diophantine approximation and Fourier analysis, we find the first and second moment for an arbitrary periodic $f$ of bounded variation, and (almost) prove a conjecture of Bromberg and Ulcigrai on the appropriate scaling factor in a so-called temporal limit theorem. Birkhoff sums also satisfy a central limit theorem at certain quadratic irrationals.

Empirical measures and random walks on compact spaces in the quadratic Wasserstein metric

Estimating the rate of convergence of the empirical measure of an i.i.d. sample to the reference measure is a classical problem in probability theory. Extending recent results of Ambrosio, Stra and Trevisan on 2-dimensional manifolds, in this paper we prove sharp asymptotic and nonasymptotic upper bounds for the mean rate in the quadratic Wasserstein metric $W_2$ on a $d$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold. Under a smoothness assumption on the reference measure, our bounds match the classical rate in the optimal matching problem on the unit cube due to Ajtai, Komlós, Tusnády and Talagrand. The i.i.d. condition is relaxed to stationary samples with a mixing condition. As an example of a nonstationary sample, we also consider the empirical measure of a random walk on a compact Lie group. Surprisingly, on semisimple groups random walks attain almost optimal rates even without a spectral gap assumption. The proofs are based on Fourier analysis, and in particular on a Berry-Esseen smoothing inequality for $W_2$ on compact manifolds, a result of independent interest with a wide range of applications.

Random walks on the circle and Diophantine approximation

Random walks on the circle group $\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$ whose elementary steps are lattice variables with span $α\not\in \mathbb{Q}$ or $p/q \in \mathbb{Q}$ taken mod $\mathbb{Z}$ exhibit delicate behavior. In the rational case we have a random walk on the finite cyclic subgroup $\mathbb{Z}_q$, and the central limit theorem and the law of the iterated logarithm follow from classical results on finite state space Markov chains. In this paper we extend these results to random walks with irrational span $α$, and explicitly describe the transition of these Markov chains from finite to general state space as $p/q \to α$ along the sequence of best rational approximations. We also consider the rate of weak convergence to the stationary distribution in the Kolmogorov metric, and in the rational case observe a surprising transition from polynomial to exponential decay after $\approx q^2$ steps; this seems to be a new phenomenon in the theory of random walks on compact groups. In contrast, the rate of weak convergence to the stationary distribution in the total variation metric is purely exponential.

On the metric theory of approximations by reduced fractions: a quantitative Koukoulopoulos-Maynard theorem

Let $ψ: \mathbb{N} \to [0,1/2]$ be given. The Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture, recently resolved by Koukoulopoulos and Maynard, asserts that for almost all reals $α$ there are infinitely many coprime solutions $(p,q)$ to the inequality $|α- p/q| < ψ(q)/q$, provided that the series $\sum_{q=1}^\infty φ(q) ψ(q) / q$ is divergent. In the present paper, we establish a quantitative version of this result, by showing that for almost all $α$ the number of coprime solutions $(p,q)$, subject to $q \leq Q$, is of asymptotic order $\sum_{q=1}^Q 2 φ(q) ψ(q) / q$. The proof relies on the method of GCD graphs as invented by Koukoulopoulos and Maynard, together with a refined overlap estimate coming from sieve theory, and number-theoretic input on the "anatomy of integers". The key phenomenon is that the system of approximation sets exhibits "asymptotic independence on average" as the total mass of the set system increases.

Optimal and typical $L^2$ discrepancy of 2-dimensional lattices

We undertake a detailed study of the $L^2$ discrepancy of rational and irrational 2-dimensional lattices either with or without symmetrization. We give a full characterization of lattices with optimal $L^2$ discrepancy in terms of the continued fraction partial quotients, and compute the precise asymptotics whenever the continued fraction expansion is explicitly known, such as for quadratic irrationals or Euler's number $e$. In the metric theory, we find the asymptotics of the $L^2$ discrepancy for almost every irrational, and the limit distribution for randomly chosen rational and irrational lattices.

Quantum invariants of hyperbolic knots and extreme values of trigonometric products

In this paper we study the relation between the function $J_{4_1,0}$, which arises from a quantum invariant of the figure-eight knot, and Sudler's trigonometric product. We find $J_{4_1,0}$ up to a constant factor along continued fraction convergents to a quadratic irrational, and we show that its asymptotics deviates from the universal limiting behavior that has been found by Bettin and Drappeau in the case of large partial quotients. We relate the value of $J_{4_1,0}$ to that of Sudler's trigonometric product, and establish asymptotic upper and lower bounds for such Sudler products in response to a question of Lubinsky.

Maximizing Sudler products via Ostrowski expansions and cotangent sums

There is an extensive literature on the asymptotic order of Sudler's trigonometric product $P_N (α) = \prod_{n=1}^N |2 \sin (πn α)|$ for fixed or for "typical" values of $α$. In the present paper we establish a structural result, which for a given $α$ characterizes those $N$ for which $P_N(α)$ attains particularly large values. This characterization relies on the coefficients of $N$ in its Ostrowski expansion with respect to $α$, and allows us to obtain very precise estimates for $\max_{1 \le N \leq M} P_N(α)$ and for $\sum_{N=1}^M P_N(α)^c$ in terms of $M$, for any $c>0$. Furthermore, our arguments give a natural explanation of the fact that the value of the hyperbolic volume of the complement of the figure-eight knot appears generically in results on the asymptotic order of the Sudler product and of the Kashaev invariant.
