Delayed coincidence in electron-neutrino capture on gallium for neutrino spectroscopy

This work explains a delayed-coincidence method to perform MeV-scale neutrino spectroscopy with electron-neutrino capture on gallium. An electron-neutrino possessing energy greater than 407.6 keV can be captured on gallium and produce a daughter germanium nucleus at its first excited state with a mean lifetime of 114 ns. The released electron and gammas before the first excited state of Ge can generate a prompt signal representing the solar neutrino energy and the gamma from the deexcitation of the first excited state, 175 keV, can give a delayed signal. The cross-section of this electron-neutrino capture process is evaluated and is comparable with electron-neutrino capture on chlorine. A possible implementation with a liquid scintillator is discussed to exploit the delayed coincidence. The detection scheme is more feasible than using 115In, etc, but need a larger target. The proposed method can be helpful for the MeV-scale solar neutrino spectroscopy and for solving the gallium anomaly.

Muon Flux Measurement at China Jinping Underground Laboratory

China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) is ideal for studying solar-, geo-, and supernova neutrinos. A precise measurement of the cosmic-ray background would play an essential role in proceeding with the R\&D research for these MeV-scale neutrino experiments. Using a 1-ton prototype detector for the Jinping Neutrino Experiment (JNE), we detected 264 high-energy muon events from a 645.2-day dataset at the first phase of CJPL (CJPL-I), reconstructed their directions, and measured the cosmic-ray muon flux to be $(3.53\pm0.22_{\text{stat.}}\pm0.07_{\text{sys.}})\times10^{-10}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. The observed angular distributions indicate the leakage of cosmic-ray muon background and agree with the simulation accounting for Jinping mountain's terrain. A survey of muon fluxes at different laboratory locations situated under mountains and below mine shaft indicated that the former is generally a factor of $(4\pm2)$ larger than the latter with the same vertical overburden. This study provides a convenient back-of-the-envelope estimation for muon flux of an underground experiment.

Portage: Bringing Hackers' Wisdom to Science

Providing users of HPC systems with a wide variety of up to date software packages is a challenging task. Large software stacks built from source are difficult to manage, requiring powerful package management tools. The Portage package manager from Gentoo is a highly flexible tool that offers a mature solution to this otherwise daunting task. The Gentoo Prefix project develops and maintains a way of installing Gentoo systems in non-standard locations, bringing the virtues of Gentoo to other operating systems. Here we demonstrate how a Gentoo Prefix installation can be used to cross compile software packages for the Intel Xeon Phi known as Knights Corner, as well as to manage large software stacks in HPC environments.
