End-to-end Optimization of Constellation Shaping for Wiener Phase Noise Channels with a Differentiable Blind Phase Search

As the demand for higher data throughput in coherent optical communication systems increases, we need to find ways to increase capacity in existing and future optical communication links. To address the demand for higher spectral efficiencies, we apply end-to-end optimization for joint geometric and probabilistic constellation shaping in the presence of Wiener phase noise and carrier phase estimation. Our approach follows state-of-the-art bitwise auto-encoders, which require a differentiable implementation of all operations between transmitter and receiver, including the DSP algorithms. In this work, we show how to modify the ubiquitous blind phase search (BPS) algorithm, a popular carrier phase estimation algorithm, to make it differentiable and include it in the end-to-end constellation shaping. By leveraging joint geometric and probabilistic constellation shaping, we are able to obtain a robust and pilot-free modulation scheme improving the performance of 64-ary communication systems by at least 0.1bit/symbol compared to square QAM constellations with neural demappers and by 0.05 bit/symbol compared to previously presented approaches applying only geometric constellation shaping.

Transport-Reaction Systems: Higher-Dimensional Domains and a Qualitative Dichotomy

We study general linear transport-reaction systems on an arbitrary dimensional hypercube with periodic boundary conditions. Transport-reaction systems are often used to model the finite speed movement and interaction of particles, bacteria or animals. We first show a weak spectral mapping theorem and demonstrate its' application. Secondly, we introduce a certain class of so-called hyperbolic instabilities, which provide a natural framework for transport-driven instabilities on one-dimensional domains: They are either Turing patterns or increasingly oscillating hyperbolic instabilities. A new algebraic condition for the existence of Turing patterns is obtained as a side-product.

A fast acquisition rate system for charge exchange measurements at the plasma edge at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak

In this work, a new type of high through-put Czerny-Turner spectrometer has been developed which allows to acquire multiple channels simultaneously with a repetition time on the order of \SI{10}{\us} at different wavelengths. The spectrometer has been coupled to the edge charge exchange recombination system at ASDEX Upgrade which has been recently refurbished with new lines of sight. Construction features, calibration methods, and initial measurements obtained with the new setup will be presented.

Measurement of a 2D fast-ion velocity distribution function by tomographic inversion of fast-ion D-alpha spectra

We present the first measurement of a local fast-ion 2D velocity distribution function $f(v_\parallel, v_\perp)$. To this end, we heated a plasma in ASDEX Upgrade by neutral beam injection and measured spectra of fast-ion D-alpha (FIDA) light from the plasma center in three views simultaneously. The measured spectra agree very well with synthetic spectra calculated from a TRANSP/NUBEAM simulation. Based on the measured FIDA spectra alone, we infer $f(v_\parallel, v_\perp)$ by tomographic inversion. Salient features of our measurement of $f(v_\parallel, v_\perp)$ agree reasonably well with the simulation: the measured as well as the simulated $f(v_\parallel, v_\perp)$ are lopsided towards negative velocities parallel to the magnetic field, and they have similar shapes. Further, the peaks in the simulation of $f(v_\parallel, v_\perp)$ at full and half injection energies of the neutral beam also appear in the measurement at similar velocity-space locations. We expect that we can measure spectra in up to seven views simultaneously in the next ASDEX Upgrade campaign which would further improve measurements of $f(v_\parallel, v_\perp)$ by tomographic inversion.

Doppler tomography in fusion plasmas and astrophysics

Doppler tomography is a well-known method in astrophysics to image the accretion flow, often in the shape of thin discs, in compact binary stars. As accretion discs rotate, all emitted line radiation is Doppler-shifted. In fast-ion D-alpha (FIDA) spectroscopy measurements in magnetically confined plasma, the D-alpha-photons are likewise Doppler-shifted ultimately due to gyration of the fast ions. In either case, spectra of Doppler-shifted line emission are sensitive to the velocity distribution of the emitters. Astrophysical Doppler tomography has lead to images of accretion discs of binaries revealing bright spots, spiral structures, and flow patterns. Fusion plasma Doppler tomography has lead to an image of the fast-ion velocity distribution function in the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade. This image matched numerical simulations very well. Here we discuss achievements of the Doppler tomography approach, its promise and limits, analogies and differences in astrophysical and fusion plasma Doppler tomography, and what can be learned by comparison of these applications.
