Synthetic SU(3) non-Abelian gauge fields in photonic synthetic frequency dimensions

Synthetic gauge fields provide a powerful route to engineer photonic wave dynamics, especially in synthetic frequency dimensions formed by modulated resonator modes. While most previous realizations have focused on Abelian or lower-rank non-Abelian structures, a photonic implementation of SU(3) gauge fields in the synthetic frequency dimension has remained lacking. Here we propose a route to realize SU(3) gauge structure using three coupled ring resonators with modulation- and interference-engineered mode conversion. We formulate a tight-binding Hamiltonian with matrix-valued hopping generated by the Gell-Mann matrices and show how its evolution can be decomposed into experimentally implementable optical elements. The resulting platform supports SU(3)-structured band dispersions with color-resolved texture and wave-packet dynamics shaped by SU(3) gauge fields. Full-wave-inspired numerical modeling further confirms the expected spectral response and Zitterbewegung-like motion in SU(3) subspaces. Our results introduce SU(3) gauge fields into synthetic frequency photonics and establish a route toward higher-rank non-Abelian control of light in modulated resonator systems.

Non-Abelian Electric Field and Zitterbewegung on a Photonic Frequency Chain

The synthetic frequency dimension, which realizes fictitious spatial dimensions from the spectral degree of freedom, has emerged as a promising platform for engineering artificial gauge fields in studying quantum simulations and topological physics with photons. A current central task for frequency-domain photons is the creation and manipulation of nontrivial non-Abelian field strength tensors and observing their governing dynamics. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a miniaturized scheme for creating non-Abelian electric fields in a photonic frequency chain using a polarization-multiplexed, time-modulated ring resonator. By engineering spin-orbit coupling via modulation dephasing, polarization rotation, and polarization retardation, we achieve programmable control over synthetic Floquet bands and their quasimomentum spin-resolved textures. Leveraging self-heterodyne coherent detection, we demonstrate Zitterbewegung -- a trembling motion of photons -- induced by non-Abelian electric fields on the frequency chain. We further observe the interference between Zitterbewegung and Bloch oscillations arising from the coexistence of non-Abelian and Abelian electric fields. Our work bridges synthetic dimensions with non-Abelian gauge theory for versatile photonic emulation of relativistic quantum mechanics and spinor dynamics, and can be instrumental in applications like frequency-domain optical computation and multimodal frequency comb control.

Synthetic non-Abelian Electric Fields and Spin-Orbit Coupling in Photonic Synthetic Dimensions

We theoretically propose a scheme to synthesize photonic non-Abelian electric field and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the synthetic frequency dimension based on a polarization-multiplexed time-modulated ring resonator. Inside the ring resonator, the cascade of polarization-dependent phase modulation, polarization rotation, and phase retardation enables a photonic realization of minimal SOC composed of equal Rashba and Dresselhaus terms. The synthetic bands and associated spin textures can be effectively probed by the continuous-wave polarization- and time-resolved band structure measurements. Meanwhile, the pulse dynamics in the frequency dimension can be manipulated by both synthetic Abelian and non-Abelian electric fields, leading to Bloch oscillation, Zitterbewegung, and their interplay dynamics. Our proposed setup can be realized with free-space optics, fibers, and integrated photonics, and provides pseudospin control knobs for large-scale synthetic lattices based on frequency combs.
