Quasi-contact metric structures from Sasaki-Einstein metrics

We construct the first examples of quasi-contact metric structures that are not contact metric in every odd dimension greater than or equal to $5$. In dimension $5$, we construct a one-parameter family of such examples with a Killing characteristic vector field by deforming Sasaki-Einstein $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-structures. This yields compact, homogeneous examples on $S^5$. In arbitrary dimensions, we investigate quasi-contact metric structures with a Killing characteristic vector field and derive a Ricci curvature criterion for the structure to be K-contact.

Integrable LCK manifolds

We study a natural class of LCK manifolds that we call integrable LCK manifolds: those where the anti-Lee form $η$ corresponds to an integrable distribution. As an application we obtain a characterization of unimodular integrable LCK Lie algebras as Kähler Lie algebras equipped with suitable derivations.

Interpreting the outcomes of research assessments: a geometrical approach

Research evaluations and comparison of the assessments of academic institutions (scientific areas, departments, universities etc.) are among the major issues in recent years in higher education systems. One method, followed by some national evaluation agencies, is to assess the research quality by the evaluation of a limited number of publications in a way that each publication is rated among $n$ classes. This method produces, for each institution, a distribution of the publications in the $n$ classes. In this paper we introduce a natural geometric way to compare these assessments by introducing an ad hoc distance from the performance of an institution to the best possible achievable assessment. Moreover, to avoid the methodological error of comparing non-homogeneous institutions, we introduce a {\em geometric score} based on such a distance. The latter represents the probability that an ideal institution, with the same configuration as the one under evaluation, performs worst. We apply our method, based on the geometric score, to rank, in two specific scientific areas, the Italian universities using the results of the evaluation exercise VQR 2011-2014.

Nearly Sasakian manifolds revisited

We provide a new, self-contained and more conceptual proof of the result that an almost contact metric manifold of dimension greater than 5 is Sasakian if and only if it is nearly Sasakian.

Sasakian immersions into the sphere

The aim of this paper is to study Sasakian immersions of compact Sasakian manifolds into the odd-dimensional sphere equipped with the standard Sasakian structure. We obtain a complete classification of such manifolds in the Einstein and $η$-Einstein cases when the codimension of the immersion is $4$. Moreover, we exhibit infinite families of compact Sasakian $η$--Einstein manifolds which cannot admit a Sasakian immersion into any odd-dimensional sphere. Finally, we show that, after possibly performing a ${\mathcal {D}}$-homothetic deformation, a homogeneous Sasakian manifold can be Sasakian immersed into some odd-dimensional sphere if and only if $S$ is regular and either $S$ is simply--connected or its fundamental group is finite cyclic.

Hard Lefschetz Theorem for Vaisman manifolds

We establish a Hard Lefschetz Theorem for the de Rham cohomology of compact Vaisman manifolds. A similar result is proved for the basic cohomology with respect to the Lee vector field. Motivated by these results, we introduce the notions of a Lefschetz and of a basic Lefschetz locally conformal symplectic (l.c.s.) manifold of the first kind. We prove that the two notions are equivalent if there exists a Riemannian metric such that the Lee vector field is unitary and parallel and its metric dual $1$-form coincides with the Lee $1$-form. Finally, we discuss several examples of compact l.c.s. manifolds of the first kind which do not admit compatible Vaisman metrics.

A non-Sasakian Lefschetz K-contact manifold of Tievsky type

We find a family of five dimensional completely solvable compact manifolds that constitute the first examples of $K$-contact manifolds which satisfy the Hard Lefschetz Theorem and have a model of Tievsky type just as Sasakian manifolds but do not admit any Sasakian structure.

Examples of 3-quasi-Sasakian manifolds

We provide a general method to construct examples of quasi-Sasakian 3-structures on a (4n+3)-dimensional manifold. Moreover, among this class, we give the first explicit example of a compact 3-quasi-Sasakian manifold which is not the global product of a 3-Sasakian manifold and a hyper-Kähler manifold.

Cosymplectic p-spheres

We introduce cosymplectic circles and cosymplectic spheres, which are the analogues in the cosymplectic setting of contact circles and contact spheres. We provide a complete classification of compact 3-manifolds that admit a cosymplectic circle. The properties of tautness and roundness for a cosymplectic $p$-sphere are studied. To any taut cosymplectic circle on a three-dimensional manifold $M$ we are able to canonically associate a complex structure and a conformal symplectic couple on $M \times \mathbb{R}$. We prove that a cosymplectic circle in dimension three is round if and only if it is taut. On the other hand, we provide examples in higher dimensions of cosymplectic circles which are taut but not round and examples of cosymplectic circles which are round but not taut.

Nearly Sasakian geometry and $SU(2)$-structures

We carry on a systematic study of nearly Sasakian manifolds. We prove that any nearly Sasakian manifold admits two types of integrable distributions with totally geodesic leaves which are, respectively, Sasakian or $5$-dimensional nearly Sasakian manifolds. As a consequence, any nearly Sasakian manifold is a contact manifold. Focusing on the $5$-dimensional case, we prove that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between nearly Sasakian structures and a special class of nearly hypo $SU(2)$-structures. By deforming such a $SU(2)$-structure one obtains in fact a Sasaki-Einstein structure. Further we prove that both nearly Sasakian and Sasaki-Einstein $5$-manifolds are endowed with supplementary nearly cosymplectic structures. We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between nearly cosymplectic structures and a special class of hypo $SU(2)$-structures which is again strictly related to Sasaki-Einstein structures. Furthermore, we study the orientable hypersurfaces of a nearly Kähler 6-manifold and, in the last part of the paper, we define canonical connections for nearly Sasakian manifolds, which play a role similar to the Gray connection in the context of nearly Kähler geometry. In dimension $5$ we determine a connection which parallelizes all the nearly Sasakian $SU(2)$-structure as well as the torsion tensor field. An analogous result holds also for Sasaki-Einstein structures.

Sasakian nilmanifolds

We prove that a compact nilmanifold admits a Sasakian structure if and only if it is a compact quotient of the generalized Heisenberg group of odd dimension by a co-compact discrete subgroup.

A survey on cosymplectic geometry

We give an up-to-date overview of geometric and topological properties of cosymplectic and coKaehler manifolds. We also mention some of their applications to time-dependent mechanics.
