Asymptotic states for stationary Unruh-DeWitt detectors

We study the late-time asymptotic state of a stationary Unruh-DeWitt detector interacting with a field in a thermal state. We work in an open system framework, where the field plays the role of an environment for the detector. The long-time interaction between the detector and the field is modelled with the aid of a one-parameter family of switching functions that turn on and off the interaction Hamiltonian between the two subsystems, such that the long-time interaction limit is reached as the family parameter goes to infinity. In such limit, we show that if the field is in a Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) state and the detector is stationary with respect to the notion of positive frequency of the field, in the Born-Markov approximation, the asymptotic state of the detector is a Gibbs state at the KMS temperature. We then relax the KMS condition for the field state, and require only that a frequency-dependent version of the detailed balance condition for the Wightman function pulled back to the detector worldline hold, in the sense that the inverse temperature appearing in the detailed balance relation need not be constant. In this setting, we show that the late-time asymptotic state of the detector has the form of a thermal density matrix, but with a frequency-dependent temperature. We present examples of these results, which include the classical Unruh effect and idealised Hawking radiation (for fields in the HHI state), and also the study of the late-time behaviour of detectors following stationary "cusped" and circular motions in Minkowski space interacting with a massless Klein-Gordon field in the Minkowski vacuum. In the cusped motion case, a frequency-dependent, effective temperature for the asymptotic late-time detector state is obtained analytically. In the circular motion case, such effective temperature is obtained numerically.

Semiclassical theories as initial value problems

Motivated by the initial value problem in semiclassical gravity, we study the initial value problem of a system consisting of a quantum scalar field weakly interacting with a classical one. The quantum field obeys a Klein-Gordon equation with a potential proportional to the classical field. The classical field obeys an inhomogeneous Klein-Gordon equation sourced by the renormalised expectation value of the squared quantum field in a Hadamard state, $\langle Ψ| Φ^2 Ψ\rangle$. Thus, the system of equations for the scalar fields reminisces of the semi-classical Einstein field equations with a Klein-Gordon field, where classical geometry is sourced by the renormalised stress-energy tensor of the quantum field, and the Klein-Gordon equation depends on the metric explicitly. We show that a unique asymptotic solution for the system can be obtained perturbatively at any fixed finite order in the weak coupling from initial data provided that the interaction is switched on and off smoothly in a spacetime region to the future of the initial data surface. This allows one to provide "free" initial data for the decoupled system that guarantees that the Wightman function of the quantum field be of Hadamard form, and hence that the renormalised $\langle Ψ| Φ^2 Ψ\rangle$ exist (in a perturbative sense) and be smooth. We comment on how to relax the switching of the interaction, which might be relevant for the corresponding problem in semiclassical gravity.

Quantum fields during black hole formation: How good an approximation is the Unruh state?

We study the quantum effects of a test Klein-Gordon field in a Vaidya spacetime consisting of a collapsing null shell that forms a Schwazschild black hole, by explicitly obtaining, in a $(1+1)$-dimensional model, the Wightman function, the renormalised stress-energy tensor, and by analysing particle detector rates along stationary orbits in the exterior black hole region, and make a comparison with the folklore that the Unruh state is the state that emerges from black hole formation. In the causal future of the shell, we find a negative ingoing flux at the horizon that agrees precisely with the Unruh state calculation, and is the source of black hole radiation, while in the future null infinity we find that the radiation flux output in the Unruh state is an upper bound for the positive outgoing flux in the collapsing null shell spacetime. This indicates that back-reaction estimates based on Unruh state calculations over-estimate the energy output carried by so-called pre-Hawking radiation. The value of the output predicted by the Unruh state is however approached exponentially fast. Finally, we find that at late times, stationary observers in the exterior black hole region in the collapsing shell spacetime detect the local Hawking temperature, which is also well characterised by the Unruh state, coming from right-movers. Early-time discrepancies between the detector rates for the Unruh state and for the state in the collapsing shell spacetime are explored numerically.

Mode solutions for a Klein-Gordon field in anti-de Sitter spacetime with dynamical boundary conditions of Wentzell type

We study a real, massive Klein-Gordon field in the Poincaré fundamental domain of the $(d+1)$-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime, subject to a particular choice of dynamical boundary conditions of generalized Wentzell type, whereby the boundary data solves a non-homogeneous, boundary Klein-Gordon equation, with the source term fixed by the normal derivative of the scalar field at the boundary. This naturally defines a field in the conformal boundary of the Poincaré fundamental domain of AdS. We completely solve the equations for the bulk and boundary fields and investigate the existence of bound state solutions, motivated by the analogous problem with Robin boundary conditions, which are recovered as a limiting case. Finally, we argue that both Robin and generalized Wentzell boundary conditions are distinguished in the sense that they are invariant under the action of the isometry group of the AdS conformal boundary, a condition which ensures in addition that the total flux of energy across the boundary vanishes.

Generally covariant dynamical reduction models and the Hadamard condition

We provide general guidelines for generalizing dynamical reduction models to curved spacetimes and propose a class of generally covariant relativistic versions of the GRW model. We anticipate that the collapse operators of our class of models may play a rôle in a yet-to-be-formulated theory of semiclassical gravity with collapses. We show explicitly that the collapse operators map a dense domain of states that are initially Hadamard to final Hadamard states -- a property that we expect will be needed for the construction of such a semiclassical theory. Finally, we provide a simple example in which we explicitly compute the violations in energy-momentum due to the state reduction process and conclude that this violation is of the order of a parameter of the model -- supposed to be small.

Boundary Hilbert spaces and trace operators

We discuss the introduction of boundary Hilbert spaces for a class of physical systems for which it is not possible to factor their state spaces as tensor products of Hilbert spaces naturally associated to their boundaries and bulks respectively. In order to do this we make use of the so called trace operators that play a relevant role in the analysis of PDE's in bounded regions. By taking advantage of these operators and some functorial aspects of the construction of Fock spaces, we will show how to obtain quantum dynamics at the boundaries defined in appropriate Hilbert spaces associated with them.

Waiting for Unruh

How long does a uniformly accelerated observer need to interact with a quantum field in order to record thermality in the Unruh temperature? We address this question for a pointlike Unruh-DeWitt detector, coupled linearly to a real Klein-Gordon field of mass $m\ge0$ and treated within first order perturbation theory, in the limit of large detector energy gap $E_{\text{gap}}$. We first show that when the interaction duration $ΔT$ is fixed, thermality in the sense of detailed balance cannot hold as $E_{\text{gap}}\to\infty$, and this property generalises from the Unruh effect to any Kubo-Martin-Schwinger state satisfying certain technical conditions. We then specialise to a massless field in four spacetime dimensions and show that detailed balance does hold when $ΔT$ grows as a power-law in $E_{\text{gap}}$ as $E_{\text{gap}}\to\infty$, provided the switch-on and switch-off intervals are stretched proportionally to $ΔT$ and the switching function has sufficiently strong Fourier decay. By contrast, if $ΔT$ grows by stretching a plateau in which the interaction remains at constant strength but keeping the duration of the switch-on and switch-off intervals fixed, detailed balance at $E_{\text{gap}}\to\infty$ requires $ΔT$ to grow faster than any polynomial in $E_{\text{gap}}$, under mild technical conditions. These results also hold for a static detector in a Minkowski heat bath. The results limit the utility of the large $E_{\text{gap}}$ regime as a probe of thermality in time-dependent versions of the Hawking and Unruh effects, such as an observer falling into a radiating black hole. They may also have implications on the design of prospective experimental tests of the Unruh effect.

Asymptotically thermal responses for smoothly switched detectors

Thermal phenomena in quantum field theory can be detected with the aid of particle detectors coupled to quantum fields along stationary worldlines, by testing whether the response of such a detector satisfies the detailed balance version of the KMS condition at a constant temperature. This relation holds when the interaction between the field and the detector has infinite time duration. Operationally, however, detectors interact with fields for a finite amount of time, controlled by a switching function of compact support, and the KMS detailed balance condition cannot hold exactly for finite time interactions at arbitrarily large detector energy gap. In this large energy gap regime, we show that, for an adiabatically switched Rindler detector, the Unruh temperature emerges asymptotically after the detector and the field have interacted for a time that is polynomially long in the large energy. We comment on the significance of the adiabaticity assumption in this result.

Quantization of scalar fields coupled to point-masses

We study the Fock quantization of a compound classical system consisting of point masses and a scalar field. We consider the Hamiltonian formulation of the model by using the geometric constraint algorithm of Gotay, Nester and Hinds. By relying on this Hamiltonian description, we characterize in a precise way the real Hilbert space of classical solutions to the equations of motion and use it to rigorously construct the Fock space of the system. We finally discuss the structure of this space, in particular the impossibility of writing it in a natural way as a tensor product of Hilbert spaces associated with the point masses and the field, respectively.

Can a particle detector cross a Cauchy horizon?

Cauchy horizons are well known to exhibit instabilities in classical spacetime dynamics and singularities in quantum field theory. We analyse the response of an Unruh-DeWitt particle detector that falls towards a Cauchy horizon, in terms of the specifics of the horizon, the choice of the quantum state and the specifics of the detector's trajectory. As a prototype, we study in detail the case for the $1+1$ Reissner-Nordström black hole with a scalar field in the Hartle-Hawking state. Comparisons are made with the response of a detector that falls into a Schwarzschild-like singularity.

Onset and decay of the 1+1 Hawking-Unruh effect: what the derivative-coupling detector saw

We study an Unruh-DeWitt particle detector that is coupled to the proper time derivative of a real scalar field in 1+1 spacetime dimensions. Working within first-order perturbation theory, we cast the transition probability into a regulator-free form, and we show that the transition rate remains well defined in the limit of sharp switching. The detector is insensitive to the infrared ambiguity when the field becomes massless, and we verify explicitly the regularity of the massless limit for a static detector in Minkowski half-space. We then consider a massless field for two scenarios of interest for the Hawking-Unruh effect: an inertial detector in Minkowski spacetime with an exponentially receding mirror, and an inertial detector in $(1+1)$-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime, in the Hartle-Hawking-Israel and Unruh vacua. In the mirror spacetime the transition rate traces the onset of an energy flux from the mirror, with the expected Planckian late time asymptotics. In the Schwarzschild spacetime the transition rate of a detector that falls in from infinity gradually loses thermality, diverging near the singularity proportionally to $r^{-3/2}$.
