Bézout coefficients of coprime numbers approximate quadratic Bézier curves

Given a point $(p,q)$ with nonnegative integer coordinates and $p\not=q$, we prove that the quadratic Bézier curve relative to the points $(p,q)$, $(0,0)$ and $(q,p)$ is approximately the envelope of a family of segments whose endpoints are the Bézout coefficients of coprime numbers belonging to neighborhoods of $(p,q)$ and $(q,p)$, respectively.

Detrended Fluctuation Analysis for Continuous Real Variable Functions

Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) is a widely used technique for estimating scaling exponents and long-range correlations in time series data. In this work, we formulate DFA in a continuous framework (which we call Continuous DFA or CDFA for short) and provide a rigorous analytical description of its behavior for real-valued continuous functions. We derive an explicit integral representation of the fluctuation function and establish its regularity properties. We show that the fluctuation grows linearly at sufficiently small scales for all signals, so that the associated scaling exponent converges universally to one. Although finite scaling ranges may exhibit apparent power law fits with different exponents, these reflect only local approximations rather than the true asymptotic behavior. Our results show that CDFA primarily measures first-order regularity rather than correlation structure. Consequently, while the classical discrete DFA distinguishes rough stochastic processes, CDFA loses discriminating power for continuous deterministic signals. These findings provide a clear theoretical explanation of both the capabilities and the intrinsic limitations of DFA.

Sturmian external angles of primitive components in the Mandelbrot set

In this work we introduce the broken line construction, which is a geometric and combinatorial algorithm that computes periodic Sturmian angles of a given period, yielding the locations of their landing parameters in the Mandelbrot set. An easy to implement method to compute the conjugated angle of a periodic Sturmian angle is also provided. Furthermore, if $θ$ is a periodic Sturmian angle computed by the broken line construction, then we show the existence of a one-to-one correspondence between its binary expansion and its associated kneading sequence.

Generalized cell structures

Cell structures were introduced by W. Debski and E. Tymchatyn as a way to study some classes of topological spaces and their continuous functions by means of discrete approximations. In this work we weaken the notion of cell structure and prove that the resulting class of topological space admitting such a generalized cell structure includes non-regular spaces.

The numerical range of periodic banded Toeplitz operators

We prove that the closure of the numerical range of a $(n+1)$-periodic and $(2m+1)$-banded Toeplitz operator can be expressed as the closure of the convex hull of the uncountable union of numerical ranges of certain symbol matrices. In contrast to the periodic $3$-banded (or tridiagonal) case, we show an example of a $2$-periodic and $5$-banded Toeplitz operator such that the closure of its numerical range is not equal to the numerical range of a single finite matrix.

Matrices similar to centrosymmetric matrices

In this paper we give conditions on a matrix which guarantee that it is similar to a centrosymmetric matrix. We use this conditions to show that some $4 \times 4$ and $6 \times 6$ Toeplitz matrices are similar to centrosymmetric matrices. Furthermore, we give conditions for a matrix to be similar to a matrix which has a centrosymmetric principal submatrix, and conditions under which a matrix can be dilated to a matrix similar to a centrosymmetric matrix.

The numerical range of some periodic tridiagonal operators is the convex hull of the numerical ranges of two finite matrices

In this paper we prove a conjecture stated by the first two authors establishing the closure of the numerical range of a certain class of $n+1$-periodic tridiagonal operators as the convex hull of the numerical ranges of two tridiagonal $(n+1) \times (n+1)$ matrices. Furthermore, when $n+1$ is odd, we show that the size of such matrices simplifies to $\frac{n}{2}+1$.

Delay-dependent and delay-independent stability of Cournot duopoly model with tax evasion and time-delay

In this paper a stability analysis for a Cournot duopoly model with tax evasion and time-delay in a continuous-time framework is presented. The mathematical model under consideration follows a gradient dynamics approach, is nonlinear and four-dimensional with state variables given by the production and declared revenue of each competitor. We prove that both the marginal cost rate and time delay play roles as bifurcation parameters. More precisely, if the marginal cost rate lies in certain closed interval then the equilibrium point is delay-independent stable, otherwise it is delay-dependent stable and a Hopf bifurcation necessarily occurs. Some numerical simulations are presented in order to confirm the proposed theoretical results and illustrate the effect of the bifurcation parameters on model stability.

Fractional Lotka-Volterra model with time-delay and delayed controller for a bioreactor

In this paper, a fractional Lotka-Volterra mathematical model for a bioreactor is proposed and used to fit the data provided by a bioprocess known as continuous fermentation of Zymomonas mobilis. The model contemplates a time-delay $τ$ due to the dead-time in obtaining the measurement of biomass $x(t)$. A Hopf bifurcation analysis is performed to characterize the inherent self oscillatory experimental bioprocess response. As consequence, stability conditions for the equilibrium point together with conditions for limit cycles using the delay $τ$ as bifurcation parameter are obtained. Under the assumptions that the use of observers, estimators or extra laboratory measurements are avoided to prevent the rise of computational or monetary costs, for the purpose of control, we will only consider the measurement of the biomass. A simple controller that can be employed is the proportional action controller $u(t)=k_px(t)$, which is shown to fail to stabilize the obtained model under the proposed analysis. Another suitable choice is the use of a delayed controller $u(t)=k_rx(t-h)$ which successfully stabilizes the model even when it is unstable. Finally, the proposed theoretical results are corroborated through numerical simulations.

The numerical range of a class of periodic tridiagonal operators

In this paper we compute the closure of the numerical range of certain periodic tridiagonal operators. This is achieved by showing that the closure of the numerical range of such operators can be expressed as the closure of the convex hull of the uncountable union of numerical ranges of certain symbol matrices. For a special case, this result can be improved so that it is the convex hull of the union of the numerical ranges of only two matrices. A conjecture is stated for the general case.

Digital images unveil geometric structures in pairs of relatively prime numbers

We present a transformation, based on the Bézout's identity, which maps the set of pairs of relatively prime numbers $(p,q)$ with fixed $p$ and $0<q<p$, to pairs of relatively prime numbers in the $p\times p$ square in $\mathbb R^2$, in such a way that intriguing quadratic arcs show up. We exhibit parametrizations of quadratic curves which fit such quadratic arcs and we also justify algebraically the ensuing geometry.

Classification of eventually periodic subshifts

We provide a classification of eventually periodic subshifts up to conjugacy and flow equivalence. We use our results to prove that each skew Sturmian subshift is conjugate to exactly one other skew Sturmian subshift and that all skew Sturmian subshifts are flow equivalent to one another.

A class of tridiagonal operators associated to some subshifts

We consider a class of tridiagonal operators induced by not necessary pseudoergodic biinfinite sequences. Using only elementary techniques we prove that the numerical range of such operators is contained in the convex hull of the union of the numerical ranges of the operators corresponding to the constant biinfinite sequences; whilst the other inclusion is shown to hold when the constant sequences belong to the subshift generated by the given biinfinite sequence. Applying recent results by S. N. Chandler-Wilde et al. and R. Hagger, which rely on limit operator techniques, we are able to provide more general results although the closure of the numerical range needs to be taken.
