On ${\mathcal N}=4$ supersymmetry enhancements in three dimensions

We introduce a class of 3d theories consisting of strongly-coupled ${\mathcal N}=4$ systems coupled to ${\mathcal N}=3$ Chern-Simons gauge multiplets, which exhibit ${\mathcal N}=4$ enhancements when a peculiar condition on the Chern-Simons levels is met. An example is the $SU(N)^3$ Chern-Simons theory coupled to the 3d $T_N$ theory, which enhances to ${\mathcal N}=4$ when $1/k_1+1/k_2+1/k_3=0$. We also show that some but not all of these ${\mathcal N}=4$ enhancements can be understood by considering M5-branes on a special class of Seifert manifolds. Our construction provides a large class of ${\mathcal N}=4$ theories which have not been studied previously.

Quantized Coulomb Branches, Monopole Bubbling and Wall-Crossing Phenomena in 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ Theories

To study the quantized Coulomb branch of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ unitary SQCD theories, we propose a new method to compute correlators of monopole and Casimir operators that are inserted in the $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}^2_\epsilon$ Omega background. This method combines results from supersymmetric localization with inputs from the brane realisation of the correlators in type IIB string theory. The main challenge is the computation of the partition functions of certain Super-Matrix-Models (SMMs), which appear in the contribution of monopole bubbling sectors and are realised as the theory living on the D1 strings in the brane construction. We find that the non-commutativity arising in the monopole operator insertions is related to a wall-crossing phenomenon in the FI parameter space of the SMM. We illustrate our method in various examples and we provide explicit results for arbitrary correlators of non-bubbling bare monopole operators. We also discuss the realisation of the non-commutative product as a Moyal (star) product and use it to successfully test our results.

On Monopole Bubbling Contributions to 't Hooft Loops

Monopole bubbling contributions to supersymmetric 't Hooft loops in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories are computed by SQM indices. As recently argued, those indices are hard to compute due to the presence of Coulomb vacua that are not captured by standard localization techniques. We propose an algorithmic method to compute the full bubbling contributions that circumvent this issue, by considering SQM with more matter fields and isolating the bubbling terms as residues in flavor fugacities. The enlarged SQMs are read from brane configurations realizing the bubbling sector of a given 't Hooft loop. We apply our technique to loop operators in $\mathcal{N}=2$ conformal SQCD theories. In addition we embed this discussion in the larger setup of a 5d-4d system interacting along a line, associated to the brane systems previously discussed. The bubbling terms arise from residues of specific instanton sectors of 5d line operators in this context.

Note on Monopole Operators in Chern-Simons-Matter Theories

Monopole operators in Chern-Simons theories with charged matter have been studied using the state-operator map in CFTs, as states on $\mathbb{R}\times S^2$ with background magnetic flux on $S^2$. Gauge invariance requires a dressing with matter modes which provides non-zero spin to the monopoles. In this note we propose a description of the monopole operators directly on $\mathbb{R}^3$, as a singular behavior of the gauge and matter fields in the vicinity of the insertion point, with a dressing. We study abelian theories with a charged boson or a charged fermion. We extend the discussion to abelian supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter theories and describe the BPS monopoles, which have spin and preserve a single supercharge. We match our results against the prediction from the superconformal index.

Wilson loops in 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories and S-duality

We study the action of S-duality on half-BPS Wilson loop operators in 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories. The duality is the statement that different massive deformations of a single 5d SCFT are described by different gauge theories, or equivalently that the SCFT points in parameter space of two gauge theories coincide. The pairs of dual theories that we study are realized by brane webs in type IIB string theory that are S-dual to each other. We focus on $SU(2)$ SQCD theories with $N_f \le 4$ flavors, which are self-dual, and on $SU(3)$ SQCD theories, which are dual to $SU(2)^2$ quiver theories. From string theory engineering we predict that Wilson loops are mapped to dual Wilson loops under S-duality. We confirm the predictions with exact computations of Wilson loop VEVs, which we extract from the 5d half-index in the presence of auxiliary loop operators (also known as higher qq-characters) sourced by D3 branes placed in the brane webs. A special role is played by Wilson loops in tensor products of the (anti)fundamental representation, which provide a natural basis to express the S-duality action. The exact computations also reveal the presence of additional multiplicative factors in the duality map, in the form of background Wilson loops.

Holographic duals of 3d S-fold CFTs

We construct non-geometric AdS$_4$ solutions of IIB string theory where the fields in overlapping patches are glued by elements of the S-duality group. We obtain them by suitable quotients of compact and non-compact geometric solutions. The quotient procedure suggests CFT duals as quiver theories with links involving the so-called $T[U(N)]$ theory. We test the validity of the non-geometric solutions (and of our proposed holographic duality) by computing the three-sphere partition function $Z$ of the CFTs. A first class of solutions is obtained by an S-duality quotient of Janus-type non-compact solutions and is dual to 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SCFTs; for these we manage to compute $Z$ of the dual CFT at finite $N$, and it agrees perfectly with the supergravity result in the large $N$ limit. A second class has five-branes, it is obtained by a M\"obius-like S-quotient of ordinary compact solutions and is dual to 3d $\mathcal{N}=3$ SCFTs. For these, $Z$ agrees with the supergravity result if one chooses the limit carefully so that the effect of the fivebranes does not backreact on the entire geometry. Other limits suggest the existence of IIA duals.

The Infrared Fixed Points of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $USp(2N)$ SQCD Theories

We derive the algebraic description of the Coulomb branch of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $USp(2N)$ SQCD theories with $N_f$ fundamental hypermultiplets and determine their low energy physics in any vacuum from the local geometry of the moduli space, identifying the interacting SCFTs which arise at singularities and possible extra free sectors. The SCFT with the largest moduli space arises at the most singular locus on the Coulomb branch. For $N_f>2N$ (good theories) it sits at the origin of the conical variety as expected. For $N_f =2N$ we find two separate most singular points, from which the two isomorphic components of the Higgs branch of the UV theory emanate. The SCFTs sitting at any of these two vacua have only odd dimensional Coulomb branch generators, which transform under an accidental $SU(2)$ global symmetry. We provide a direct derivation of their moduli spaces of vacua, and propose a Lagrangian mirror theory for these fixed points. For $2 \le N_f < 2N$ the most singular locus has one or two extended components, for $N_f$ odd or even, and the low energy theory involves an interacting SCFT of one of the above types, plus free twisted hypermultiplets. For $N_f=0,1$ the Coulomb branch is smooth. We complete our analysis by studying the low energy theory at the symmetric vacuum of theories with $N < N_f \le 2N$, which exhibits a local Seiberg-like duality.

The Infrared Physics of Bad Theories

We study the complete moduli space of vacua of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $U(N)$ SQCD theories with $N_f$ fundamentals, building on the algebraic description of the Coulomb branch, and deduce the low energy physics in any vacuum from the local geometry of the moduli space. We confirm previous claims for good and ugly SQCD theories, and show that bad theories flow to the same interacting fixed points as good theories with additional free twisted hypermultiplets. A Seiberg-like duality proposed for bad theories with $N \le N_f \le 2N-2$ is ruled out: the spaces of vacua of the putative dual theories are different. However such bad theories have a distinguished vacuum, which preserves all the global symmetries, whose infrared physics is that of the proposed dual. We finally explain previous results on sphere partition functions and elucidate the relation between the UV and IR $R$-symmetry in this symmetric vacuum.

The Space of Vacua of 3d $\mathcal{N}=3$ Abelian Theories

We use brane techniques to study the space of vacua of abelian 3d $\mathcal{N}=3$ gauge theories. The coordinates on these spaces are the vevs of chiral monopole and meson operators, which are realized in the type IIB brane configuration of the theory by adding semi-infinite $(1,k)$ strings or F1 strings. The study of various brane setups allows us to determine a basis of chiral operators and chiral ring relations relevant to each branch of vacua, leading to the algebraic description of these branches. The method is mostly graphical and does not require actual computations. We apply it and provide explicit results in various examples. For linear quivers we find that the space of vacua has in general a collection of Coulomb-like branches, a Higgs branch and mixed branches. For circular quivers we find an extra branch, the geometric branch, parametrized by monopoles with equal magnetic charges in all $U(1)$ nodes and meson operators. We explain how to include FI and mass deformations. We also study $\mathcal{N}=3$ theories realized with $(p,q)$ 5-branes.

Ring Relations and Mirror Map from Branes

We study the space of vacua of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ theories from a novel approach building on the type IIB brane realization of the theory and in which the insertion of local chiral operators in the path integral is obtained from integrating out light modes in appropriate brane setups. Most of our analysis focuses on abelian quiver theories which can be realized as the low-energy theory of D3-D5-NS5 brane arrays. Their space of vacua contains a Higgs branch, parametrized by the vevs of half-BPS meson operators, and a Coulomb branch, parametrized by the vevs of half-BPS monopole operators. We show that the Higgs operators are inserted by adding F1 strings and D3 branes, while the Coulomb operators are inserted by adding D1 strings and D3 branes, with specific orientations, to the initial brane setup of the theory. This approach has two main advantages. First the ring relations describing the Higgs and Coulomb branches can be derived by looking at specific brane setups with multiple interpretations in terms of operator insertions. This provides a new derivation of the Coulomb branch quantum relations. Secondly the map between the Higgs and Coulomb operators of mirror dual theories is obtained in a trivial way from IIB S-duality.

Six-dimensional Origin of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM with Duality Defects

We study the topologically twisted compactification of the 6d $(2,0)$ M5-brane theory on an elliptically fibered K\"ahler three-fold preserving two supercharges. We show that upon reducing on the elliptic fiber, the 4d theory is $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang Mills, with varying complexified coupling $\tau$, in the presence of defects. For abelian gauge group this agrees with the so-called duality twisted theory, and we determine a non-abelian generalization to $U(N)$. When the elliptic fibration is singular, the 4d theory contains 3d walls (along the branch-cuts of $\tau$) and 2d surface defects, around which the 4d theory undergoes $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality transformations. Such duality defects carry chiral fields, which from the 6d point of view arise as modes of the two-form $B$ in the tensor multiplet. Each duality defect has a flavor symmetry associated to it, which is encoded in the structure of the singular elliptic fiber above the defect. Generically 2d surface defects will intersect in points in 4d, where there is an enhanced flavor symmetry. The 6d point of view provides a complete characterization of this 4d-3d-2d-0d `Matroshka'-defect configuration.

Localization of supersymmetric field theories on non-compact hyperbolic three-manifolds

We study supersymmetric gauge theories with an R-symmetry, defined on non-compact, hyperbolic, Riemannian three-manifolds, focusing on the case of a supersymmetry-preserving quotient of Euclidean AdS$_3$. We compute the exact partition function in these theories, using the method of localization, thus reducing the problem to the computation of one-loop determinants around a supersymmetric locus. We evaluate the one-loop determinants employing three different techniques: an index theorem, the method of pairing of eigenvalues, and the heat kernel method. Along the way, we discuss aspects of supersymmetry in manifolds with a conformal boundary, including supersymmetric actions and boundary conditions.

M5-branes on S^2 x M_4: Nahm's Equations and 4d Topological Sigma-models

We study the 6d N=(0,2) superconformal field theory, which describes multiple M5-branes, on the product space S^2 x M_4, and suggest a correspondence between a 2d N=(0,2) half-twisted gauge theory on S^2 and a topological sigma-model on the four-manifold M_4. To set up this correspondence, we determine in this paper the dimensional reduction of the 6d N=(0,2) theory on a two-sphere and derive that the four-dimensional theory is a sigma-model into the moduli space of solutions to Nahm's equations, or equivalently the moduli space of k-centered SU(2) monopoles, where k is the number of M5-branes. We proceed in three steps: we reduce the 6d abelian theory to a 5d Super-Yang-Mills theory on I x M_4, with I an interval, then non-abelianize the 5d theory and finally reduce this to 4d. In the special case, when M_4 is a Hyper-Kahler manifold, we show that the dimensional reduction gives rise to a topological sigma-model based on tri-holomorphic maps. Deriving the theory on a general M_4 requires knowledge of the metric of the target space. For k=2 the target space is the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold and we twist the theory to obtain a topological sigma-model, which has both scalar fields and self-dual two-forms.

Mirror Symmetry And Loop Operators

Wilson loops in gauge theories pose a fundamental challenge for dualities. Wilson loops are labeled by a representation of the gauge group and should map under duality to loop operators labeled by the same data, yet generically, dual theories have completely different gauge groups. In this paper we resolve this conundrum for three dimensional mirror symmetry. We show that Wilson loops are exchanged under mirror symmetry with Vortex loop operators, whose microscopic definition in terms of a supersymmetric quantum mechanics coupled to the theory encode in a non-trivial way a representation of the original gauge group, despite that the gauge groups of mirror theories can be radically different. Our predictions for the mirror map, which we derive guided by branes in string theory, are confirmed by the computation of the exact expectation value of Wilson and Vortex loop operators on the three-sphere.

Partition functions of 3d $\hat D$-quivers and their mirror duals from 1d free fermions

We study the matrix models calculating the sphere partition functions of 3d gauge theories with $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry and a quiver structure of a $\hat D$ Dynkin diagram (where each node is a unitary gauge group). As in the case of necklace ($\hat A $) quivers, we can map the problem to that of free fermion quantum mechanics whose complicated Hamiltonian we find explicitly. Many of these theories are conjectured to be dual under mirror symmetry to certain unitary linear quivers with extra Sp nodes or antisymmetric hypermultiplets. We show that the free fermion formulations of such mirror pairs are related by a linear symplectic transformation. We then study the large N expansion of the partition function, which as in the case of the $\hat A$-quivers is given to all orders in 1/N by an Airy function. We simplify the algorithm to calculate the numerical coefficients appearing in the Airy function and evaluate them for a wide class of $\hat D$-quiver theories.

The Casimir Energy in Curved Space and its Supersymmetric Counterpart

We study $d$-dimensional Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) on the cylinder, $S^{d-1}\times \mathbb{R}$, and its deformations. In $d=2$ the Casimir energy (i.e. the vacuum energy) is universal and is related to the central charge $c$. In $d=4$ the vacuum energy depends on the regularization scheme and has no intrinsic value. We show that this property extends to infinitesimally deformed cylinders and support this conclusion with a holographic check. However, for $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric CFTs, a natural analog of the Casimir energy turns out to be scheme independent and thus intrinsic. We give two proofs of this result. We compute the Casimir energy for such theories by reducing to a problem in supersymmetric quantum mechanics. For the round cylinder the vacuum energy is proportional to $a+3c$. We also compute the dependence of the Casimir energy on the squashing parameter of the cylinder. Finally, we revisit the problem of supersymmetric regularization of the path integral on Hopf surfaces.

Hanany-Witten effect and SL(2,Z) dualities in matrix models

We provide tests of dualities for three-dimensional N=4 quiver SCFTs with brane realizations in IIB string theory, by matching their exact partition functions on $S^3$. The dualities are generated by SL(2,Z) transformations and Hanany-Witten 5-brane moves. These contain mirror symmetry as well as dualities identifiying fixed points of Yang-Mills quivers and Chern-Simons theories. The partition function is given by a matrix model, that can be nicely rearranged into a sequence of factors mimicking the brane realization. Identities obeyed by these elementary factors can be used to match the partition functions of dual theories, providing tests for the full web of dualities. In particular we are able to check mirror symmetry for linear and circular quivers with gauge nodes of arbitrary ranks. Our analysis also leads to a proof of a conjectured formula evaluating the matrix models of linear quiver theories.

Supersymmetric counterterms from new minimal supergravity

We present a systematic classification of counterterms of four-dimensional supersymmetric field theories on curved space, obtained as the rigid limit of new minimal supergravity. These are supergravity invariants constructed using the field theory background fields. We demonstrate that if the background preserves two supercharges of opposite chirality, then all dimensionless counterterms vanish, implying that in this case the supersymmetric partition function is free of ambiguities. When only one Euclidean supercharge is preserved, we describe the ambiguities that appear in the partition function, in particular in the dependence on marginal couplings.
