Quantum relaxation and metastability of lattice bosons with cavity-induced long-range interactions

The coupling of cold atoms to the radiation field within a high-finesse optical resonator, an optical cavity, induces long-range interactions which can compete with an underlying optical lattice. The interplay between short- and long-range interactions gives rise to new phases of matter including supersolidity (SS) and density waves (DW), and interesting quantum dynamics. Here it is shown that for hard-core bosons in one dimension the ground state phase diagram and the quantum relaxation after sudden quenches can be calculated exactly in the thermodynamic limit. Remanent DW order is observed for quenches from a DW ground state into the superfluid (SF) phase below a dynamical transition line. After sufficiently strong SF to DW quenches beyond a static metastability line DW order emerges on top of remanent SF order, giving rise to a dynamically generated supersolid state.

Quantum XX-model with competing short- and long-range interactions: Phases and phase transitions in and out of equilibrium

We consider the quantum XX-model in the presence of competing nearest-neighbour and global-range interactions, which is equivalent to a Bose-Hubbard model with cavity mediated global range interactions in the hard core boson limit. Using fermionic techniques the problem is solved exactly in one dimension in the thermodynamic limit. The ground state phase diagram consists of two ordered phases: ferromagnetic (F) and antiferromagnetic (AF), as well as an XY-phase having quasi-long-range order. We have also studied quantum relaxation after sudden quenches. Quenching from the AF phase to the XY region remanent AF order is observed below a dynamical transition line. In the opposite quench, from the XY region to the AF-phase beyond a static metastability line AF order arises on top of remanent XY quasi-long-range order, which corresponds to dynamically generated supersolid state in the equivalent Bose-Hubbard model with hard-core bosons.

Test of quantum thermalization in the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model

We study the quantum relaxation of the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model after global quenches with a real-time variational Monte Carlo method and address the question whether this non-integrable, two-dimensional system thermalizes or not. We consider both interaction quenches in the paramagnetic phase and field quenches in the ferromagnetic phase and compare the time-averaged probability distributions of non-conserved quantities like magnetization and correlation functions to the thermal distributions according to the canonical Gibbs ensemble obtained with quantum Monte Carlo simulations at temperatures defined by the excess energy in the system. We find that the occurrence of thermalization crucially depends on the quench parameters: While after the interaction quenches in the paramagnetic phase thermalization can be observed, our results for the field quenches in the ferromagnetic phase show clear deviations from the thermal system. These deviations increase with the quench strength and become especially clear comparing the shape of the thermal and the time-averaged distributions, the latter ones indicating that the system does not completely lose the memory of its initial state even for strong quenches. We discuss our results with respect to a recently formulated theorem on generalized thermalization in quantum systems.

Light cone in the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model in time-dependent mean-field theory

We investigate the propagation of a local perturbation in the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model with a time-dependent application of mean-field theory based on the BBGKY hierarchy. We show that the perturbation propagates through the system with a finite velocity and that there is transition from Manhattan to Euclidian metric, resulting in a light cone with an almost circular shape at sufficiently large distances. The propagation velocity of the perturbation defining the front of the light cone is discussed with respect to the parameters of the Hamiltonian and compared to exact results for the transverse-field Ising model in one dimension.

Quantum relaxation and finite size effects in the XY chain in a transverse field after global quenches

We consider global quenches in the quantum XY chain in a transverse field and study the nonequilibrium relaxation of the magnetization and the correlation function as well as the entanglement entropy in finite systems. For quenches in the ordered phase, the exact results are well described by a semiclassical theory (SCT) in terms of ballistically moving quasiparticles. In the thermodynamic limit the SCT is exact for the entanglement entropy and its modified version following the method of Calabrese, Essler and Fagotti: arXiv:1204.3911 is exact for the magnetization and the correlation function, too. The stationary correlation function is shown to be described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble.
