An event generator for $h\to b\bar{b}$ decays at NLO in SMEFT matched to a parton shower

We present a Sherpa implementation of NLO corrections in dimension-six Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) to the benchmark process $h\to b\bar b$. The calculation includes NLO QCD corrections matched to a parton shower using an MCatNLO-type framework for decays. Virtual weak effects are included as two-body matrix-element corrections in different electroweak input schemes, with the corresponding decay events also evolved with the QCD parton shower. We present numerical results for the inclusive decay rate and for differential distributions in the Higgs-boson rest frame, and illustrate how the decay implementation can be combined with an independently generated production sample by embedding it in associated $Zh$ production at the LHC. This proof-of-principle implementation demonstrates how NLO SMEFT corrections can be incorporated into the widely used Sherpa event generator, providing a basis for extensions to other processes and for SMEFT studies with realistic final states and fiducial cuts within that framework.

Threshold corrections in SMEFT

Threshold corrections provide a universal link between experimentally measured broken-phase parameters and $\overline{\hbox{MS}}$ renormalised symmetric-phase parameters used in SMEFT renormalisation-group (RG) analyses and matching to new-physics models. In this work we compute in analytic form the complete set of one-loop threshold corrections in dimension-six SMEFT, using two electroweak input schemes and including tadpole effects in the Fleischer-Jegerlehner (FJ) scheme. As a by-product of the analysis, we obtain the full one-loop running of the strong coupling in SMEFT, including electroweak corrections, and the associated decoupling constants when the top quark and heavy electroweak bosons are integrated out. Although generally moderate, the loop-level dimension-six corrections can be enhanced through tadpole effects and top-quark loops, and can shift symmetric phase parameters at the 5% level under reasonable assumptions. Our results constitute a process-independent ingredient which can be readily implemented in public RG-running and matching codes in SMEFT.

State-of-the-art cross sections for ttH: NNLO predictions matched with NNLL resummation and EW corrections

We present new, state-of-the-art predictions for the associated production of the SM Higgs boson with top quarks, computed in accordance with the recommendations of the LHC Higgs Working Group. The NNLO QCD predictions, derived through suitable approximations of the two-loop virtual contribution, are supplemented with soft-gluon resummation up to NNLL accuracy. Two distinct resummation frameworks are employed - one based on direct QCD and the other on soft-collinear effective theory - and their features are compared in detail. These results are further combined with the complete-NLO corrections, yielding the most precise SM predictions for this process to date. The relevant sources of theoretical uncertainties are thoroughly estimated and discussed.

Analytic results for electroweak precision observables at NLO in SMEFT

We present analytic results for electroweak precision observables (EWPO) at next-to-leading order (NLO) in dimension-six SMEFT, with no assumptions on the flavour structure of SMEFT Wilson coefficients. The results are given in five different electroweak input schemes, thus offering a simple means, along with scale variations, of estimating theory uncertainties related to higher-order terms in the SMEFT expansion. Our results will be useful to assess the constraining power of existing and future lepton colliders for new physics scenarios.

Lorentz violating backgrounds from quadratic, shift-symmetric, ultralight dark matter

We consider an effective theory for a shift-symmetric, quadratically-coupled, ultralight spin-0 field. The leading CP-conserving interactions with Standard Model fields in the effective theory arise at dimension 8. We discuss the renormalization group evolution and positivity bounds on these operators, as well as their possible UV origins. Assuming that the spin-0 field is associated with an ultralight dark matter candidate, we discuss the effects of the dimension-8 operators on experiments searching for the oscillation of fundamental constants and Lorentz violation. We find that the direct bounds on these two effects are of similar strength but rather weak, corresponding to a UV cutoff scale of keV order, as they are mediated by dimension-8 operators.

Using the effective weak mixing angle as an input parameter in SMEFT

We implement electroweak renormalisation schemes involving the effective weak mixing angle to NLO in Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). After developing the necessary theoretical machinery, we analyse a select set of electroweak precision observables in such input schemes. An attractive feature is that large corrections from top-quark loops appearing in other schemes are absorbed into the definition of the effective weak mixing angle. On the other hand, the renormalisation condition which achieves this involves a large number of flavour-specific SMEFT couplings between the $Z$ boson and charged leptons, motivating simple flavour assumptions such as minimal flavour violation for practical applications. The results of this paper provide a valuable new component for estimating systematic uncertainties in SMEFT fits by performing analyses in multiple input schemes.

Electroweak input schemes and universal corrections in SMEFT

The choice of an electroweak (EW) input scheme is an important component of perturbative calculations in Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). In this paper we perform a systematic study of three different EW input schemes in SMEFT, in particular those using the parameter sets $\{M_W, \, M_Z, \, G_F\}$, $\{M_W, \, M_Z, \, α\}$, or $\{α, \, M_Z, \, G_F\}$. We discuss general features and calculate decay rates of $Z$ and $W$ bosons to leptons and Higgs decays to bottom quarks in these three schemes up to next-to-leading order (NLO) in dimension-six SMEFT. We explore the sensitivity to Wilson coefficients and perturbative convergence in the different schemes, and show that while the latter point is more involved than in the Standard Model, the dominant scheme-dependent NLO corrections are universal and can be taken into account by a simple set of substitutions on the leading-order results. Residual NLO corrections are then of similar size between the different input schemes, and performing calculations in multiple schemes can give a useful handle on theory uncertainties in SMEFT predictions and fits to data.

Potential and limitations of machine-learning approaches to inclusive $|V_{ub}|$ determinations

The determination of $|V_{ub}|$ in inclusive semileptonic $B \to X_u \ell ν$ decays will be among the pivotal tasks of Belle II. In this paper we study the potential and limitations of machine learning approaches that attempt to reduce theory uncertainties by extending the experimentally accessible fiducial region of the $B\to X_u \ellν$ signal into regions where the $B\to X_c \ellν$ background is dominant. We find that a deep neural network trained on low-level single particle features offers modest improvement in separating signal from background, compared to BDT set-ups using physicist-engineered high-level features. We further illustrate that while the signal acceptance of such a deep neural network deteriorates in kinematic regions where the signal is small, such as at high hadronic invariant mass, neural networks which exclude kinematic features are flatter in kinematics but less inclusive in the sampling of exclusive hadronic final states at fixed kinematics. The trade-off between these two set-ups is somewhat Monte Carlo dependent, and we study this issue using the multipurpose event generator Sherpa in addition to the widely used $B$-physics tool EvtGen.

Higgs decay to fermion pairs at NLO in SMEFT

The calculation of next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative corrections at fixed operator dimension in Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) has been a topic of much recent interest. In this paper we obtain the NLO corrections from dimension-6 operators to the Higgs boson decays $h\to f\bar{f}$, where the fermions $f \in \{μ,τ,c\}$. This extends previous results for $h\to b\bar{b}$ to all phenomenologically relevant Higgs boson decays into fermions, and provides the basis for future precision analyses of these decays within effective field theory. We point out the benefits of studying ratios of decay rates into different fermions in SMEFT, the most surprising of which is enhanced sensitivity to anomalous $hγγ$ and $hgg$ couplings induced by flavor-universal SMEFT operators, especially in scenarios where flavor-dependent Wilson coefficients are constrained by Minimal Flavor Violation.

Top-quark pair production at complete-NLO accuracy with NNLO+NNLL$'$ corrections in QCD

We describe predictions for top-quark pair differential distributions at hadron colliders, which combine state-of-the-art NNLO QCD calculations and NLO electroweak corrections together with double resummation at NNLL$'$ accuracy of threshold logarithms and small-mass logarithms. This is the first time that such a combination has appeared in the literature. Numerical results are presented for the invariant-mass distribution, the transverse-momentum distribution as well as rapidity distributions.

Top-quark pair hadroproduction in association with a heavy boson at NLO+NNLL including EW corrections

This work studies the associated production of a top-quark pair with a $W$, $Z$, or Higgs boson at the LHC. Predictions for the total cross sections as well as for several differential distributions of the massive particles in the final state are provided. These predictions, valid for the LHC operating at $13$ TeV, include without any approximation all the NLO electroweak and QCD contributions of $\mathcal{O}(α_s^{i} α^{j+1})$ with $i+j=2,3$. In addition, the predictions presented here improve upon the NLO QCD results by adding the effects of soft gluon emission corrections resummed to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The residual dependence of the predictions on scale and PDF choices is analyzed.

NLO corrections to $h\to b\bar b$ decay in SMEFT

We calculate the full set of next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections to $h\to b\bar{b}$ decay in the dimension-6 Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). Our calculation forms the basis for precision studies of this decay mode in effective field theory, providing analytic and numerical results for contributions of the 45 dimension-6 operators appearing at NLO. On the technical side, we discuss several complications in NLO SMEFT computations which have not yet been addressed in the literature. These include subtleties in Higgs-$Z$ mixing, electric charge renormalization, and especially the treatment of tadpoles in SMEFT. In particular, we highlight the role of decoupling relations in eliminating potentially large tadpole corrections to the decay rate in hybrid renormalization schemes which employ the $\overline{\hbox{MS}}$~scheme for some Standard Model parameters (such as the $b$-quark mass and electric charge) and the on-shell scheme for others.

Asymmetric heavy-quark hadroproduction at LHCb: Predictions and applications

We present a phenomenological analysis of asymmetric bottom- and charm-quark production within the LHCb acceptance relevant for $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13 \, {\rm TeV}$. Predictions are provided for both anti-$k_t$ bottom- and charm-jet pairs, which are kept differentially with respect to the invariant mass of the jet pair. It is quantified how data in this region can provide sensitivity to the couplings of the $Z$ boson to heavy quarks, and we investigate what precision is needed to compete with LEP. We also discuss how asymmetry and rate measurements can provide constraints on a particular class of new-physics models, which contains gauge bosons with small/moderate couplings to light/heavy quarks and masses of the order of $100 \, {\rm GeV}$. Predictions are obtained including all relevant QCD and QED/weak contributions up to next-to-leading order, which have been implemented in a Fortran code which allows to directly compute the asymmetric cross sections. We provide all relevant analytic formulas for our computations.

Resummation for rapidity distributions in top-quark pair production

We extend our framework for the simultaneous resummation of soft and small-mass logarithms to rapidity distributions in top quark pair production. We give numerical results for the rapidity distribution of the top quark or the anti-top quark, as well as the rapidity distribution of the $t\bar{t}$ pair, finding that resummation effects stabilize the dependence of the differential cross sections on the choice of factorization scale. We compare our results with recent measurements at the Large Hadron Collider and find good agreement. Our results may be useful in the extraction of the gluon parton distribution function from $t\bar{t}$ production.

One-loop corrections to $h\to b\bar b$ and $h\to τ\bar τ$ decays in the Standard Model Dimension-6 EFT: four-fermion operators and the large-$m_t$ limit

We calculate a set of one-loop corrections to $h\to b\bar b$ and $h\to τ\bar τ$ decays in the dimension-6 Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT). In particular, working in the limit of vanishing gauge couplings, we calculate directly in the broken phase of the theory all large logarithmic corrections and in addition the finite corrections in the large-$m_t$ limit. Moreover, we give exact results for one-loop contributions from four-fermion operators. We obtain these corrections within an extension of the widely used on-shell renormalisation scheme appropriate for SMEFT calculations, and show explicitly how UV divergent bare amplitudes from a total of 21 different SMEFT operators are rendered finite within this scheme. As a by-product of the calculation, we also compute to one-loop order the logarithmically enhanced and finite large-$m_t$ corrections to muon decay in the limit of vanishing gauge couplings, which is necessary to implement the $G_F$ input parameter scheme within the SMEFT.

QCD radiative corrections for $h\to b\bar b$ in the Standard Model Dimension-6 EFT

We calculate the $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ QCD corrections to the inclusive $h\to b\bar b$ decay rate in the dimension-6 Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). The QCD corrections multiplying the dimension-6 Wilson coefficients which alter the $hb\bar b$-vertex at tree-level are proportional to the Standard Model (SM) ones, so next-to-leading order results can be obtained through a simple rescaling of the tree-level decay rate. On the other hand, contributions from the operators $Q_{bG}$ and $Q_{HG}$, which alter the $gb\bar b$-vertex and introduce a $hgg$-vertex respectively, enter at $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ and induce sizeable corrections which are unrelated to the SM ones and cannot be anticipated through a renormalisation-group analysis. We present compact analytic results for these contributions, which we recommend to be included in future phenomenological studies.

Factorization for the light-jet mass and hemisphere soft function

Many collider observables suffer from non-global logarithms not captured by standard resummation techniques. Classic examples are the light-jet mass event shape in the limit of small mass and the related hemisphere soft function. We derive factorization formulas for both of these and explicitly demonstrate that they capture all logarithms present at NNLO. These formulas achieve full scale separation and provide the basis for all-order resummations. A characteristic feature of non-global observables is that the soft radiation is driven by multi-Wilson-line operators, and the ones arising here map onto those relevant for the case of narrow-cone jet cross sections. Numerically, the contributions of non-global logarithms to resummed hemisphere-mass event shapes are sizeable.

Resummed differential cross sections for top-quark pairs at the LHC

We present state of the art resummation predictions for differential cross sections in top-quark pair production at the LHC. They are derived from a formalism which allows the simultaneous resummation of both soft and small-mass logarithms, which endanger the convergence of fixed-order perturbative series in the boosted regime, where the partonic center-of-mass energy is much larger than the mass to the top quark. We combine such a double resummation at NNLL$'$ accuracy with standard soft-gluon resummation at NNLL accuracy and with NLO calculations, so that our results are applicable throughout the whole phase space. We find that the resummation effects on the differential distributions are significant, bringing theoretical predictions into better agreement with experimental data compared to fixed-order calculations. Moreover, such effects are not well described by the NNLO approximation of the resummation formula, especially in the high-energy tails of the distributions, highlighting the importance of all-orders resummation in dedicated studies of boosted top production.
