Constructive plaquette compilation for the parity architecture

Parity compilation is the challenge of laying out the required constraints for the parity mapping in a local way. We present the first constructive compilation algorithm for the parity architecture using plaquettes for arbitrary higher-order optimization problems. This enables adiabatic protocols, where the plaquette layout can natively be implemented, as well as fully parallelized digital circuits. The algorithm builds a rectangular layout of plaquettes, where in each layer of the rectangle at least one constraint is added. The core idea is that each constraint, consisting of any qubits on the boundary of the rectangle and some new qubits, can be decomposed into plaquettes with a deterministic procedure using ancillas. We show how to pick a valid set of constraints and how this decomposition works. We further give ways to optimize the ancilla count and show how to implement optimization problems with additional constraints.

Low-depth Circuit Implementation of Parity Constraints for Quantum Optimization

We present a construction for circuits with low gate count and depth, implementing three- and four-body Pauli-Z product operators as they appear in the form of plaquette-shaped constraints in QAOA when using the parity mapping. The circuits can be implemented on any quantum device with nearest-neighbor connectivity on a square-lattice, using only one gate type and one orientation of two-qubit gates at a time. We find an upper bound for the circuit depth which is independent of the system size. The procedure is readily adjustable to hardware-specific restrictions, such as a minimum required spatial distance between simultaneously executed gates, or gates only being simultaneously executable within a subset of all the qubits, for example a single line.

Parity Quantum Optimization: Compiler

We introduce parity quantum optimization with the aim of solving optimization problems consisting of arbitrary $k$-body interactions and side conditions using planar quantum chip architectures. The method introduces a decomposition of the problem graph with arbitrary $k$-body terms using generalized closed cycles of a hypergraph. Side conditions of the optimization problem in form of hard constraints can be included as open cycles containing the terms involved in the side conditions. The generalized parity mapping thus circumvents the need to translate optimization problems to a quadratic unconstrained binary optimization problem (QUBO) and allows for the direct encoding of higher-order constrained binary optimization problems (HCBO) on a square lattice and full parallelizability of gates.

Large-$d$ phase transitions in holographic mutual information

In the AdS/CFT correspondence, the entanglement entropy of subregions in the boundary CFT is conjectured to be dual to the area of a bulk extremal surface at leading order in $G_N$ in the holographic limit. Under this dictionary, distantly separated regions in the CFT vacuum state have zero mutual information at leading order, and only attain nonzero mutual information at this order when they lie close enough to develop significant classical and quantum correlations. Previously, the separation at which this phase transition occurs for equal-size ball-shaped regions centered at antipodal points on the boundary was known analytically only in $3$ spacetime dimensions. Inspired by recent explorations of general relativity at large-$d$, we compute the separation at which the phase transition occurs analytically in the limit of infinitely many spacetime dimensions, and find that distant regions cannot develop large correlations without collectively occupying the entire volume of the boundary theory. We interpret this result as illustrating the spatial decoupling of holographic correlations in the large-$d$ limit, and provide intuition for this phenomenon using results from quantum information literature. We also compute the phase transition separation numerically for a range of bulk spacetime dimensions from $4$ to $21$, where analytic results are intractable but numerical results provide insight into the dimension-dependence of holographic correlations. For bulk dimensions above $5$, our exact numerical results are well approximated analytically by working to next-to-leading order in the large-$d$ expansion.

Bulk Reconstruction Beyond the Entanglement Wedge

We study the portion of an asymptotically Anti de Sitter geometry's bulk where the metric can be reconstructed, given the areas of minimal 2-surfaces anchored to a fixed boundary subregion. We exhibit situations in which this region can reach parametrically far outside of the entanglement wedge. If the setting is furthermore holographic, so that the bulk geometry is dual to a state in a conformal field theory (CFT), these minimal 2-surface areas can be deduced from the expectation values of operators localized within the boundary subregion. This presents us with an alternative: Either the reduced CFT state encodes significant information about the bulk beyond the entanglement wedge, challenging conventional intuition about holographic subregion duality; or the reduced CFT state fails to contain information about operators whose expectation values give the areas of minimal 2-surfaces anchored within that subregion, challenging conventional intuition about the holographic dictionary.

A Holographic Kaleidoscope for $\mathcal{N}=1^*$

We study in detail the recently-found family of asymptotically AdS$_5\times S^5$ type IIB supergravity solutions dual to the $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ SYM theory with equal masses. The backgrounds exhibit a naked singularity and are labelled by a dimensionless parameter, $λ$, which is interpreted as the ratio of the gaugino condensate and the mass in the dual field theory. When $|λ|<1$ we show that the naked singularity is due to a smeared distribution of polarized $(p,q)$ five-branes. For this range of parameters we study the nature of the singularity using probe strings and show that the dual line operators exhibit screening behavior. These features are in line with the physics anticipated in the work of Polchinski-Strassler. For $|λ|=1$ the naked singularity has qualitatively different behavior which has no clear brane interpretation. We show that when $λ=1$ the singularity can be excised and replaced by a smooth Euclidean supergravity solution with an $S^4$ boundary.

Uplifting GPPZ: A Ten-dimensional Dual of $\mathcal{N}=1^{*}$

We find a new supersymmetric solution of type IIB supergravity which is the uplift of the GPPZ solution of maximal SO$(6)$ gauged supergravity in five dimensions. This background is expected to be holographically dual to an $\mathcal{N}=1^{*}$ supersymmetric mass deformation of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. The ten-dimensional solution is singular in the region corresponding to the IR regime of the dual gauge theory and we discuss the physics of the singularity in some detail.

Holographic dual of hot Polchinski-Strassler quark-gluon plasma

We construct the supergravity dual of the hot quark-gluon plasma in the mass-deformed ${\cal N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory (also known as ${\cal N}=1^*$). The full ten-dimensional type IIB holographic dual is described by 20 functions of two variables, which we determine numerically, and it contains a black hole with $S^5$ horizon topology. As we lower the temperature to around half of the mass of the chiral multiplets, we find evidence for (most likely a first-order) phase transition, which could lead either to one of the Polchinski-Strassler confining, screening, or oblique vacua with polarized branes, or to an intermediate phase corresponding to blackened polarized branes with an $S^2 \times S^3$ horizon topology. This phase transition is a feature that could in principle be seen by putting the theory on the lattice, and thus our result for the ratio of the chiral multiplet mass to the phase transition temperature, $m_c/T = 2.15467491205(6)$, constitutes the first prediction of string theory and AdS/CFT that could be independently checked via four-dimensional super-QCD lattice computation. We also construct the black-hole solution in certain five-dimensional gauged supergravity truncations and, without directly using uplift/reduction formulae, we find strong evidence that the five- and ten-dimensional solutions are the same. This indicates that five-dimensional gauged supergravity is powerful enough to capture the physics of the high-temperature deconfined phase of the Polchinski-Strassler quark-gluon plasma.

Faster Tensor Canonicalization

The Butler-Portugal algorithm for obtaining the canonical form of a tensor expression with respect to slot symmetries and dummy-index renaming suffers, in certain cases with a high degree of symmetry, from $O(n!)$ explosion in both computation time and memory. We present a modified algorithm which alleviates this problem in the most common cases---tensor expressions with subsets of indices which are totally symmetric or totally antisymmetric---in polynomial time. We also present an implementation of the label-renaming mechanism which improves upon that of the original Butler-Portugal algorithm, thus providing a significant speed increase for the average case as well as the highly-symmetric special case. The worst-case behavior remains $O(n!)$, although it occurs in more limited situations unlikely to appear in actual computations. We comment on possible strategies to take if the nature of a computation should make these situations more likely.

Mass-deformed M2 branes in Stenzel space

We obtain finite-temperature M2 black branes in 11-dimensional supergravity, in a $G_4$-flux background whose self-dual part approaches a solution of Cvetič, Gibbons, Lü, and Pope, based upon Stenzel's family of Ricci-flat Kähler deformed cones. Our solutions are asymptotically $AdS_4$ times a 7-dimensional Stiefel manifold $V_{5,2}$, and the branes are ``smeared'' to retain $SO(5)$ symmetry in the internal space. The solutions represent a mass deformation of the corresponding dual $CFT_3$, whose full description is at this time only partially-understood. We investigate the possibility of a confinement/de-confinement phase transition analogous to the $AdS_5 \times S^5$ case, and a possible Gregory-Laflamme type instability which could lead to polarised brane solutions which break $SO(5)$. We discuss possible consequences for AdS/CFT and the KKLT cosmological uplift mechanism.

Evanescent ergosurfaces and ambipolar hyperkähler metrics

A supersymmetric solution of 5d supergravity may admit an `evanescent ergosurface': a timelike hypersurface such that the canonical Killing vector field is timelike everywhere except on this hypersurface. The hyperkähler `base space' of such a solution is `ambipolar', changing signature from $(++++)$ to $(----)$ across a hypersurface. In this paper, we determine how the hyperkähler structure must degenerate at the hypersurface in order for the 5d solution to remain smooth. This leads us to a definition of an ambipolar hyperkähler manifold which generalizes the recently-defined notion of a `folded' hyperkähler manifold. We prove that such manifolds can be constructed from `initial' data prescribed on the hypersurface. We present an `initial value' construction of supersymmetric solutions of 5d supergravity, in which such solutions are determined by data prescribed on a timelike hypersurface, both for the generic case and for the case of an evanescent ergosurface.

Towards a violation of cosmic censorship

Numerical evidence suggests that the superradiant instability of Kerr-AdS black holes and "black resonators" evolves to smaller and smaller scales towards a "limiting" black resonator. Using $AdS_4$ supergravity, we argue that this putative endpoint to the superradiant instability does not exist.

Non-Supersymmetric, Multi-Center Solutions with Topological Flux

We find an infinite class of non-supersymmetric multi-center solutions to the STU model in five-dimensional ungauged supergravity coupled to two vector multiplets. The solutions are obtained by solving a system of linear equations on a class of Ricci-scalar-flat Kähler manifolds studied by LeBrun. After imposing an additional U(1) isometry in the base, we solve the axisymmetric $SU(\infty)$ Toda equation and obtain explicit supergravity solutions containing arbitrary numbers of 2-cycles with cohomological fluxes of all three flavors. This improves upon a previous result where only two of the three fluxes were topologically non-trivial. Imposing regularity and absence of closed timelike curves, we obtain "bubble equations" highly reminiscent of those known in the supersymmetric case. Thus we extend much of the analysis done for BPS bubbling solutions to this new family of non-supersymmetric bubbling solutions.

Doubly-Fluctuating BPS Solutions in Six Dimensions

We analyze the BPS solutions of minimal supergravity coupled to an anti-self-dual tensor multiplet in six dimensions and find solutions that fluctuate non-trivially as a function of two variables. We consider families of solutions coming from KKM monopoles fibered over Gibbons-Hawking metrics or, equivalently, non-trivial T^2 fibrations over an R3 base. We find smooth microstate geometries that depend upon many functions of one variable, but each such function depends upon a different direction inside the T^2 so that the complete solution depends non-trivially upon the whole T^2 . We comment on the implications of our results for the construction of a general superstratum.

Multi-Superthreads and Supersheets

We obtain new BPS solutions of six-dimensional, N = 1 supergravity coupled to a tensor multiplet. These solutions are sourced by multiple "superthreads" carrying D1-D5-P charges and two magnetic dipole charges. These new solutions are sourced by multiple threads with independent and arbitrary shapes and include new shape-shape interaction terms. Because the individual superthreads can be given independent profiles, the new solutions can be smeared together into continuous "supersheets," described by arbitrary functions of two variables. The supersheet solutions have singularities like those of the three-charge, two dipole-charge generalized supertube in five dimensions and we show how such five-dimensional solutions emerge from a very simple choice of profiles. The new solutions obtained here also represent an important step in finding superstrata, which are expected to play a role in the description of black-hole microstates, due to their ability to store a large amount of entropy in their two-dimensional profile.

New Supersymmetric Bubbles on AdS_3xS^3

We find a large new class of explicit solutions preserving four supercharges in six-dimensional supergravity. The solutions are determined by solving a linear system of equations on a four-dimensional Kahler base studied by LeBrun. For particular choices of the parameters, we find regular backgrounds that are asymptotic to the near-horizon limit of the D1-D5-P black string. Holography implies that these backgrounds should be dual to 1/4-BPS states in the D1-D5-P CFT.
