Szegő's Theorem for Canonical Systems: the Arov Gauge and a Sum Rule

We consider canonical systems and investigate the Szegő class, which is defined via the finiteness of the associated entropy functional. Noting that the canonical system may be studied in a variety of gauges, we choose to work in the Arov gauge, in which we prove that the entropy integral is equal to an integral involving the coefficients of the canonical system. This sum rule provides a spectral theory gem in the sense proposed by Barry Simon.

Finite-gap CMV matrices: Periodic coordinates and a Magic Formula

We prove a bijective unitary correspondence between 1) the isospectral torus of almost-periodic, absolutely continuous CMV matrices having fixed finite-gap spectrum and 2) special periodic block-CMV matrices satisfying a Magic Formula. This latter class arises as spectrally-dependent operator Möbius transforms of certain generating CMV matrices which are periodic up to a rotational phase; for this reason we call them "MCMV". Such matrices are related to a choice of orthogonal rational functions on the unit circle, and their correspondence to the isospectral torus follows from a functional model in analog to that of GMP matrices. As a corollary of our construction we resolve a conjecture of Simon; namely, that Caratheodory functions associated to such CMV matrices arise as quadratic irrationalities.

KdV hierarchy via Abelian coverings and operator identities

We establish precise spectral criteria for potential functions $V$ of reflectionless Schrödinger operators $L_V = -\partial_x^2 + V$ to admit solutions to the Korteweg de-Vries (KdV) hierarchy with $V$ as an initial value. More generally, our methods extend the classical study of algebro-geometric solutions for the KdV hierarchy to noncompact Riemann surfaces by defining generalized Abelian integrals and analogues of the Baker-Akhiezer function on infinitely connected domains with a uniformly thick boundary satisfying a fractional moment condition.

Ahlfors problem for polynomials

We raise a conjecture that asymptotics for Chebyshev polynomials in a complex domain can be given in terms of the reproducing kernels of a suitable Hilbert space of analytic functions in this domain. It is based on two classical results due to Garabedian and Widom. To support this conjecture we study asymptotics for Ahlfors extremal polynomials in the complement to a system of intervals on $\mathbb R$, arcs on $\mathbb T$, and its continuous counterpart.

Szego\H o-Widom asymptotics of Chebyshev Polynomials on Circular Arcs

Thiran and Detaille give an explicit formula for the asymptotics of the sup-norm of the Chebyshev polynomials on a circular arc. We give the so-called $\textrm{Szeg\H o}$-Widom asymptotics for this domain, i.e., explicit expressions for the asymptotics of the corresponding extremal polynomials. Moreover, we solve a similar problem with respect to the upper envelope of a family of polynomials uniformly bounded on this arc. That is, we give explicit formulas for the asymptotics of the error of approximation as well as of the extremal functions. Our computations show that in the proper normalization the limit of the upper envelope represents the diagonal of a reproducing kernel of a certain Hilbert space of analytic functions. Due to Garabedian the analytic capacity in an arbitrary domain is the diagonal of the corresponding $\textrm{Szeg\H o}$ kernel. We don't know any result of this kind with respect to upper envelopes of polynomials. If this is a general fact or a specific property of the given domain, we rise as an open question.

Periodic GMP Matrices

We recall criteria on the spectrum of Jacobi matrices such that the corresponding isospectral torus consists of periodic operators. Motivated by those known results for Jacobi matrices, we define a new class of operators called GMP matrices. They form a certain Generalization of matrices related to the strong Moment Problem. This class allows us to give a parametrization of almost periodic finite gap Jacobi matrices by periodic GMP matrices. Moreover, due to their structural similarity we can carry over numerous results from the direct and inverse spectral theory of periodic Jacobi matrices to the class of periodic GMP matrices. In particular, we prove an analogue of the remarkable "magic formula" for this new class.

A Functional Model for SMP Matrices and the Jacobi Flow

This is the second part of the paper arXiv:1309.0959v2 on the theory of SMP (Strong Moment Problem) matrices and their relation to the Killip-Simon problem on two disjoint intervals. In this part we define and study the Jacobi flow on SMP matrices.
