Optimal regularity in time and space for the porous medium equation

Regularity estimates in time and space for solutions to the porous medium equation are shown in the scale of Sobolev spaces. In addition, higher spatial regularity for powers of the solutions is obtained. Scaling arguments indicate that these estimates are optimal. In the linear limit, the proven regularity estimates are consistent with the optimal regularity of the linear case.

Well-posedness of nonlinear diffusion equations with nonlinear, conservative noise

We prove the pathwise well-posedness of stochastic porous media and fast diffusion equations driven by nonlinear, conservative noise. As a consequence, the generation of a random dynamical system is obtained. This extends results of the second author and Souganidis, who considered analogous spatially homogeneous and first-order equations, and earlier works of Lions, Perthame, and Souganidis.

Regularization by noise for stochastic Hamilton-Jacobi equations

We study regularizing effects of nonlinear stochastic perturbations for fully nonlinear PDE. More precisely, path-by-path $L^{\infty}$ bounds for the second derivative of solutions to such PDE are shown. These bounds are expressed as solutions to reflected SDE and are shown to be optimal.

Strong convergence rates for explicit space-time discrete numerical approximations of stochastic Allen-Cahn equations

The scientific literature contains a number of numerical approximation results for stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with superlinearly growing nonlinearities but, to the best of our knowledge, none of them prove strong or weak convergence rates for full-discrete numerical approximations of space-time white noise driven SPDEs with superlinearly growing nonlinearities. In particular, in the scientific literature there exists neither a result which proves strong convergence rates nor a result which proves weak convergence rates for full-discrete numerical approximations of stochastic Allen-Cahn equations. In this article we bridge this gap and establish strong convergence rates for full-discrete numerical approximations of space-time white noise driven SPDEs with superlinearly growing nonlinearities such as stochastic Allen-Cahn equations. Moreover, we also establish lower bounds for strong temporal and spatial approximation errors which demonstrate that our strong convergence rates are essentially sharp and can, in general, not be improved.

Well-posedness and regularity for quasilinear degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic SPDE

We study quasilinear degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic stochastic partial differential equations with general multiplicative noise within the framework of kinetic solutions. Our results are twofold: First, we establish new regularity results based on averaging techniques. Second, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions in a full $L^1$ setting requiring no growth assumptions on the nonlinearities. In addition, we prove a comparison result and an $L^1$-contraction property for the solutions.

Path-by-path regularization by noise for scalar conservation laws

We prove a path-by-path regularization by noise result for scalar conservation laws. In particular, this proves regularizing properties for scalar conservation laws driven by fractional Brownian motion and generalizes the respective results obtained in [Gess, Souganidis; Comm. Pure Appl. Math. (2017)]. In addition, we introduce a new path-by-path scaling property which is shown to be sufficient to imply regularizing effects.

Regularity of solutions to scalar conservation laws with a force

We prove regularity estimates for entropy solutions to scalar conservation laws with a force. Based on the kinetic form of a scalar conservation law, a new decomposition of entropy solutions is introduced, by means of a decomposition in the velocity variable, adapted to the non-degeneracy properties of the flux function. This allows a finer control of the degeneracy behavior of the flux. In addition, this decomposition allows to make use of the fact that the entropy dissipation measure has locally finite singular moments. Based on these observations, improved regularity estimates for entropy solutions to (forced) scalar conservation laws are obtained.

Ergodicity and local limits for stochastic local and nonlocal p-Laplace equations

Ergodicity for local and nonlocal stochastic singular $p$-Laplace equations is proven, without restriction on the spatial dimension and for all $p\in[1,2)$. This generalizes previous results from [Gess, Tölle; J. Math. Pures Appl., 2014], [Liu, Tölle; Electron. Commun. Probab., 2011], [Liu; J. Evol. Equations, 2009]. In particular, the results include the multivalued case of the stochastic (nonlocal) total variation flow, which solves an open problem raised in [Barbu, Da Prato, Röckner; SIAM J. Math. Anal., 2009]. Moreover, under appropriate rescaling, the convergence of the unique invariant measure for the nonlocal stochastic $p$-Laplace equation to the unique invariant measure of the local stochastic $p$-Laplace equation is proven.

Synchronization by noise

We provide sufficient conditions for synchronization by noise, i.e. under these conditions we prove that weak random attractors for random dynamical systems consist of single random points. In the case of SDE with additive noise, these conditions are also essentially necessary. In addition, we provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a minimal weak point random attractor consisting of a single random point. As a result, synchronization by noise is proven for a large class of SDE with additive noise. In particular, we prove that the random attractor for an SDE with drift given by a (multidimensional) double-well potential and additive noise consists of a single random point. All examples treated in [Tearne, PTRF; 2008] are also included.

Long-time behavior, invariant measures and regularizing effects for stochastic scalar conservation laws

We study the long-time behavior and the regularity of pathwise entropy solutions to stochastic scalar conservation laws with random in time spatially homogeneous fluxes and periodic initial data. We prove that the solutions converge to their spatial average, which is the unique invariant measure, and provide a rate of convergence, the latter being new even in the deterministic case for dimensions higher than two. The main tool is a new regularization result in the spirit of averaging lemmata for scalar conservation laws, which, in particular, implies a regularization by noise-type result for pathwise quasi-solutions.

The Jain-Monrad criterion for rough paths and applications to random Fourier series and non-Markovian Hörmander theory

We discuss stochastic calculus for large classes of Gaussian processes, based on rough path analysis. Our key condition is a covariance measure structure combined with a classical criterion due to Jain and Monrad [Ann. Probab. 11 (1983) 46-57]. This condition is verified in many examples, even in absence of explicit expressions for the covariance or Volterra kernels. Of special interest are random Fourier series, with covariance given as Fourier series itself, and we formulate conditions directly in terms of the Fourier coefficients. We also establish convergence and rates of convergence in rough path metrics of approximations to such random Fourier series. An application to SPDE is given. Our criterion also leads to an embedding result for Cameron-Martin paths and complementary Young regularity (CYR) of the Cameron-Martin space and Gaussian sample paths. CYR is known to imply Malliavin regularity and also Itô-like probabilistic estimates for stochastic integrals (resp., stochastic differential equations) despite their (rough) pathwise construction. At last, we give an application in the context of non-Markovian Hörmander theory.

Synchronization by noise for order-preserving random dynamical systems

We provide sufficient conditions for weak synchronization by noise for order-preserving random dynamical systems on Polish spaces. That is, under these conditions we prove the existence of a weak point attractor consisting of a single random point. This generalizes previous results in two directions: First, we do not restrict to Banach spaces and second, we do not require the partial order to be admissible nor normal. As a second main result and application we prove weak synchronization by noise for stochastic porous media equations with additive noise.

Semi-discretization for stochastic scalar conservation laws with multiple rough fluxes

We develop a semi-discretization approximation for scalar conservation laws with multiple rough time dependence in inhomogeneous fluxes. The method is based on Brenier's transport-collapse algorithm and uses characteristics defined in the setting of rough paths. We prove strong $L^1$-convergence for inhomogeneous fluxes and provide a rate of convergence for homogeneous one's. The approximation scheme as well as the proofs are based on the recently developed theory of pathwise entropy solutions and uses the kinetic formulation which allows to define globally the (rough) characteristics.

Stability of solutions to stochastic partial differential equations

We provide a general framework for the stability of solutions to stochastic partial differential equations with respect to perturbations of the drift. More precisely, we consider stochastic partial differential equations with drift given as the subdifferential of a convex function and prove continuous dependence of the solutions with regard to random Mosco convergence of the convex potentials. In particular, we identify the concept of stochastic variational inequalities (SVI) as a well-suited framework to study such stability properties. The generality of the developed framework is then laid out by deducing Trotter type and homogenization results for stochastic fast diffusion and stochastic singular p-Laplace equations. In addition, we provide an SVI treatment for stochastic nonlocal p-Laplace equations and prove their convergence to the respective local models.

Weak synchronization for isotropic flows

We study Brownian flows on manifolds for which the associated Markov process is strongly mixing with respect to an invariant probability measure and for which the distance process for each pair of trajectories is a diffusion $r$. We provide a sufficient condition on the boundary behavior of $r$ at $0$ which guarantees that the statistical equilibrium of the flow is almost surely a singleton and its support is a weak point attractor. The condition is fulfilled in the case of negative top Lyapunov exponent, but it is also fulfilled in some cases when the top Lyapunov exponent is zero. Particular examples are isotropic Brownian flows on $S^{d-1}$ as well as isotropic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck flows on $\mathbb{R}^d$.

Singular-degenerate multivalued stochastic fast diffusion equations

We consider singular-degenerate, multivalued stochastic fast diffusion equations with multiplicative Lipschitz continuous noise. In particular, this includes the stochastic sign fast diffusion equation arising from the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld model for self-organized criticality. A well-posedness framework based on stochastic variational inequalities (SVI) is developed, characterizing solutions to the stochastic sign fast diffusion equation, previously obtained in a limiting sense only. Aside from generalizing the SVI approach to stochastic fast diffusion equations we develop a new proof of well-posedness, applicable to general diffusion coefficients. In case of linear multiplicative noise, we prove the existence of (generalized) strong solutions, which entails higher regularity properties of solutions than previously known.

Scalar conservation laws with multiple rough fluxes

We study pathwise entropy solutions for scalar conservation laws with inhomogeneous fluxes and quasilinear multiplicative rough path dependence. This extends the previous work of Lions, Perthame and Souganidis who considered spatially independent and inhomogeneous fluxes with multiple paths and a single driving singular path respectively. The approach is motivated by the theory of stochastic viscosity solutions which relies on special test functions constructed by inverting locally the flow of the stochastic characteristics. For conservation laws this is best implemented at the level of the kinetic formulation which we follow here.

Stochastic variational inequalities and regularity for degenerate stochastic partial differential equations

The regularity and characterization of solutions to degenerate, quasilinear SPDE is studied. Our results are two-fold: First, we prove regularity results for solutions to certain degenerate, quasilinear SPDE driven by Lipschitz continuous noise. In particular, this provides a characterization of solutions to such SPDE in terms of (generalized) strong solutions. Second, for the one-dimensional stochastic mean curvature flow with normal noise we adapt the notion of stochastic variational inequalities to provide a characterization of solutions previously obtained in a limiting sense only. This solves a problem left open in [Es-Sarhir, von Renesse; SIAM, 2012] and sharpens regularity properties obtained in [Es-Sarhir, von Renesse, Stannat; NoDEA, 2012].
