Accelerating Monte-Carlo Tree Search with Optimized Posterior Policies

We introduce a recursive AlphaZero-style Monte--Carlo tree search algorithm, "RMCTS". The advantage of RMCTS over AlphaZero's MCTS-UCB is speed. In RMCTS, the search tree is explored in a breadth-first manner, so that network inferences naturally occur in large batches. This significantly reduces the GPU latency cost. We find that RMCTS is often more than 40 times faster than MCTS-UCB when searching a single root state, and about 3 times faster when searching a large batch of root states. The recursion in RMCTS is based on computing optimized posterior policies at each game state in the search tree, starting from the leaves and working back up to the root. Here we use the posterior policy explored in "Monte--Carlo tree search as regularized policy optimization" (Grill, et al.) Their posterior policy is the unique policy which maximizes the expected reward given estimated action rewards minus a penalty for diverging from the prior policy. The tree explored by RMCTS is not defined in an adaptive manner, as it is in MCTS-UCB. Instead, the RMCTS tree is defined by following prior network policies at each node. This is a disadvantage, but the speedup advantage is more significant, and in practice we find that RMCTS-trained networks match the quality of MCTS-UCB-trained networks in roughly one-third of the training time. We include timing and quality comparisons of RMCTS vs. MCTS-UCB for three games: Connect-4, Dots-and-Boxes, and Othello.

Higher Siegel--Weil formula for unitary groups II: corank one terms

We prove the higher Siegel--Weil formula for \emph{corank one} terms, relating (1) the $r^{\rm th}$ central derivatives of corank one Fourier coefficients of Siegel--Eisenstein series, and (2) the degrees of special cycles of virtual dimension 0 on the moduli stack of Hermitian shtukas with $r$ legs. Notably, the formula holds for all $r$, regardless of the order of vanishing of the Eisenstein series. This extends earlier work of Feng--Yun--Zhang, who proved the higher Siegel--Weil formula for the non-singular (corank zero) terms.

On Unbiased Low-Rank Approximation with Minimum Distortion

We describe an algorithm for sampling a low-rank random matrix $Q$ that best approximates a fixed target matrix $P\in\mathbb{C}^{n\times m}$ in the following sense: $Q$ is unbiased, i.e., $\mathbb{E}[Q] = P$; $\mathsf{rank}(Q)\leq r$; and $Q$ minimizes the expected Frobenius norm error $\mathbb{E}\|P-Q\|_F^2$. Our algorithm mirrors the solution to the efficient unbiased sparsification problem for vectors, except applied to the singular components of the matrix $P$. Optimality is proven by showing that our algorithm matches the error from an existing lower bound.

Efficient Unbiased Sparsification

An unbiased $m$-sparsification of a vector $p\in \mathbb{R}^n$ is a random vector $Q\in \mathbb{R}^n$ with mean $p$ that has at most $m<n$ nonzero coordinates. Unbiased sparsification compresses the original vector without introducing bias; it arises in various contexts, such as in federated learning and sampling sparse probability distributions. Ideally, unbiased sparsification should also minimize the expected value of a divergence function $\mathsf{Div}(Q,p)$ that measures how far away $Q$ is from the original $p$. If $Q$ is optimal in this sense, then we call it efficient. Our main results describe efficient unbiased sparsifications for divergences that are either permutation-invariant or additively separable. Surprisingly, the characterization for permutation-invariant divergences is robust to the choice of divergence function, in the sense that our class of optimal $Q$ for squared Euclidean distance coincides with our class of optimal $Q$ for Kullback-Leibler divergence, or indeed any of a wide variety of divergences.

Intersection formulas on moduli spaces of unitary shtukas

Feng-Yun-Zhang have proved a function field analogue of the arithmetic Siegel-Weil formula, relating special cycles on moduli spaces of unitary shtukas to higher derivatives of Eisenstein series. We prove an extension of this formula in a low-dimensional case, and deduce from it a Gross-Zagier style formula expressing intersection multiplicities of cycles in terms of higher derivatives of base-change $L$-functions.

Rapoport-Zink spaces of type GU(2,n-2)

We describe the structure of the supersingular Rapoport-Zink space associated to the group of unitary similitudes of signature (2,n-2) for an unramified quadratic extension of p-adic fields. In earlier work, two of the authors described the irreducible components in the category of schemes-up-to-perfection. The goal of this work is to remove the qualifier "up-to-perfection".

Kudla's modularity conjecture on integral models of orthogonal Shimura varieties

We construct a family of special cycle classes on the regular integral model of an orthogonal Shimura variety, and show that these cycle classes appear as Fourier coefficients of a Siegel modular form. Passing to the generic fiber of the Shimura variety recovers a result of Bruinier and Raum, originally conjectured by Kudla.

Pullback formulas for arithmetic cycles on orthogonal Shimura varieties

On an orthogonal Shimura variety, one has a collection of special cycles in the Gillet-Soule arithmetic Chow group. We describe how these cycles behave under pullback to an embedded orthogonal Shimura variety of lower dimension. The bulk of the paper is devoted to cases in which the special cycles intersect the embedded Shimura variety improperly, for which we construct logarithmic expansions of certain Green currents on the deformation to the normal bundle of the embedding.

Arithmetic volumes of unitary Shimura varieties

The integral model of a $\mathrm{GU}(n-1,1)$ Shimura variety carries a universal abelian scheme over it, and the dual top exterior power of its Lie algebra carries a natural hermitian metric. We express the arithmetic volume of this metrized line bundle, defined as an iterated self-intersection in the arithmetic Chow ring, in terms of logarithmic derivatives of Dirichlet $L$-functions. We also determine the arithmetic volumes of Kudla-Rapoport divisors and relate them to coefficients of Eisenstein series.

Arithmetic volumes of unitary Shimura curves

We compute the arithmetic volumes of integral models of unitary Shimura curves. This establishes the base case of an inductive argument to compute the arithmetic volumes of unitary Shimura varieties of higher dimension, to appear in subsequent work of Bruinier and the author.

On the averaged Colmez conjecture

This is an expository article on the averaged version of Colmez's conjecture, relating Faltings heights of CM abelian varieties to Artin L-functions. It is based on the author's lectures at the Current Developments in Mathematics conference held at Harvard in 2018.

Modularity of generating series of divisors on unitary Shimura varieties II: arithmetic applications

We prove two formulas in the style of the Gross-Zagier theorem, relating derivatives of L-functions to arithmetic intersection pairings on a unitary Shimura variety. We also prove a special case of Colmez's conjecture on the Faltings heights of abelian varieties with complex multiplication. These results are derived from the authors' earlier results on the modularity of generating series of divisors on unitary Shimura varieties.

Arithmetic of Borcherds products

We compute the divisors of Borcherds products on integral models of orthogonal Shimura varieties. As an application, we obtain an integral version of a theorem of Borcherds on the modularity of a generating series of special divisors.

A Gross-Kohnen-Zagier formula for Heegner-Drinfeld cycles

Let $F$ be the field of rational functions on a smooth projective curve over a finite field, and let $\pi$ be an unramified cuspidal automorphic representation for $\mathrm{PGL}_2$ over $F$. We prove a variant of the formula of Yun and Zhang relating derivatives of the $L$-function of $\pi$ to the self-intersections of Heegner-Drinfeld cycles on moduli spaces of shtukas. In our variant, instead of a self-intersection, we compute the intersection pairing of Heegner-Drinfeld cycles coming from two different quadratic extensions of $F$, and relate the intersection to the $r$-th derivative of a product of two toric period integrals.

Modularity of generating series of divisors on unitary Shimura varieties

We form generating series of special divisors, valued in the Chow group and in the arithmetic Chow group, on the compactified integral model of a Shimura variety associated to a unitary group of signature (n-1,1), and prove their modularity. The main ingredient of the proof is the calculation of the vertical components appearing in the divisor of a Borcherds product on the integral model.
