Efficient representation of 3D spatial data for defense-related applications

Geospatial sensor data is essential for modern defense and security, offering indispensable 3D information for situational awareness. This data, gathered from sources like lidar sensors and optical cameras, allows for the creation of detailed models of operational environments. In this paper, we provide a comparative analysis of traditional representation methods, such as point clouds, voxel grids, and triangle meshes, alongside modern neural and implicit techniques like Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS). Our evaluation reveals a fundamental trade-off: traditional models offer robust geometric accuracy ideal for functional tasks like line-of-sight analysis and physics simulations, while modern methods excel at producing high-fidelity, photorealistic visuals but often lack geometric reliability. Based on these findings, we conclude that a hybrid approach is the most promising path forward. We propose a system architecture that combines a traditional mesh scaffold for geometric integrity with a neural representation like 3DGS for visual detail, managed within a hierarchical scene structure to ensure scalability and performance.

Assessing the Viability of Wave Field Synthesis in VR-Based Cognitive Research

This paper investigates the viability of Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) for enhancing auditory immersion in VR-based cognitive research. While Virtual Reality (VR) offers significant advantages for studying human perception and behavior, auditory cues are often underutilized. WFS, an advanced audio rendering technique, can create highly realistic and spatially accurate soundscapes, potentially increasing ecological validity. This study evaluates WFS by implementing a sample experiment where participants localize static and moving sound sources in both a WFS-rendered environment and a conventional stereo headphone setup. The research explores the impact of virtual environments, sound types, and durations on localization accuracy and search behavior. Findings indicate that while stereo setups can achieve higher accuracy, WFS provides a more natural and intuitive auditory experience, particularly for directional cues. The study also highlights limitations of current WFS systems, such as the lack of height localization, occlusion simulation, and user-dependent optimization, which affect performance, especially for centrally located sound sources. Despite these challenges, WFS shows promise for specialized auditory perception research, particularly for complex soundscapes where directional information is paramount.

Hardware Acceleration of Progressive Refinement Radiosity using Nvidia RTX

A vital component of photo-realistic image synthesis is the simulation of indirect diffuse reflections, which still remain a quintessential hurdle that modern rendering engines struggle to overcome. Real-time applications typically pre-generate diffuse lighting information offline using radiosity to avoid performing costly computations at run-time. In this thesis we present a variant of progressive refinement radiosity that utilizes Nvidia's novel RTX technology to accelerate the process of form-factor computation without compromising on visual fidelity. Through a modern implementation built on DirectX 12 we demonstrate that offloading radiosity's visibility component to RT cores significantly improves the lightmap generation process and potentially propels it into the domain of real-time.

Human Biases Preventing The Widespread Adoption Of Self-Driving Cars

Self-driving cars offer a plethora of safety advantages over our accustomed human-driven ones, yet many individuals feel uneasy sharing the road with these machines and entrusting their lives to their driving capabilities. Thus, bringing about a widespread adoption of autonomous cars requires overcoming these compulsions through careful planning and forethought. Here we break down the three primary psychological barriers that may hamstring or even wholly prevent their widespread adoption as well as how to tackle them.

Real-Time Global Illumination Using OpenGL And Voxel Cone Tracing

Building systems capable of replicating global illumination models with interactive frame-rates has long been one of the toughest conundrums facing computer graphics researchers. Voxel Cone Tracing, as proposed by Cyril Crassin et al. in 2011, makes use of mipmapped 3D textures containing a voxelized representation of an environments direct light component to trace diffuse, specular and occlusion cones in linear time to extrapolate a surface fragments indirect light emitted towards a given photo-receptor. Seemingly providing a well-disposed balance between performance and physical fidelity, this thesis examines the algorithms theoretical side on the basis of the rendering equation as well as its practical side in the context of a self-implemented, OpenGL-based variant. Whether if it can compete with long standing alternatives such as radiosity and raytracing will be determined in the subsequent evaluation.
