On unipotent radicals of pseudo-reductive groups

We establish some results on the structure of the geometric unipotent radicals of pseudo-reductive k-groups. In particular, our main theorem gives bounds on the nilpotency class of geometric unipotent radicals of standard pseudo-reductive groups, which are sharp in many cases. A major part of the proof rests upon consideration of the following situation: let k' be a purely inseparable field extension of k of degree p^e and let G denote the Weil restriction of scalars R_{k'/k}(G') of a reductive k'-group G'. When G= \R_{k'/k}(G') we also provide some results on the orders of elements of the unipotent radical \RR_u(G_{\bar k}) of the extension of scalars of G to the algebraic closure \bar k of k.

On a question of Külshammer for homomorphisms of algebraic groups

Let $G$ be a linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geq 0$. We show that if $H_1$ and $H_2$ are connected subgroups of $G$ such that $H_1$ and $H_2$ have a common maximal unipotent subgroup and $H_1/R_u(H_1)$ and $H_2/R_u(H_2)$ are semisimple, then $H_1$ and $H_2$ are $G$-conjugate. Moreover, we show that if $H$ is a semisimple linear algebraic group with maximal unipotent subgroup $U$ then for any algebraic group homomorphism $σ\colon U\rightarrow G$, there are only finitely many $G$-conjugacy classes of algebraic group homomorphisms $ρ\colon H\rightarrow G$ such that $ρ|_U$ is $G$-conjugate to $σ$. This answers an analogue for connected algebraic groups of a question of B. Külshammer. In Külshammer's original question, $H$ is replaced by a finite group and $U$ by a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $H$; the answer is then known to be no in general. We obtain some results in the general case when $H$ is non-connected and has positive dimension. Along the way, we prove existence and conjugacy results for maximal unipotent subgroups of non-connected linear algebraic groups. When $G$ is reductive, we formulate Külshammer's question and related conjugacy problems in terms of the nonabelian 1-cohomology of unipotent radicals of parabolic subgroups of $G$, and we give some applications of this cohomological approach. In particular, we analyse the case when $G$ is a semisimple group of rank 2.

Formal Verification of Station Keeping Maneuvers for a Planar Autonomous Hybrid System

We formally verify a hybrid control law designed to perform a station keeping maneuver for a planar vehicle. Such maneuver requires that the vehicle reaches a neighborhood of its station in finite time and remains in it while waiting for further instructions. We model the dynamics as well as the control law as a hybrid program and formally verify both the reachability and safety properties involved. We highlight in particular the automated generation of invariant regions which turns out to be crucial in performing such verification. We use the theorem prover Keymaera X to discharge some of the generated proof obligations.

Cocharacter-closure and the rational Hilbert-Mumford Theorem

For a field k, let G be a reductive k-group and V an affine k-variety on which G acts. Using the notion of cocharacter-closed G(k)-orbits in V, we prove a rational version of the celebrated Hilbert-Mumford Theorem from geometric invariant theory. We initiate a study of applications stemming from this rationality tool. A number of examples are discussed to illustrate the concept of cocharacter-closure and to highlight how it differs from the usual Zariski-closure. When k is perfect, we give a criterion in terms of closed orbits for G to be k-anisotropic, answering a question of Borel.

Generic stabilisers for actions of reductive groups

Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field and let $V$ be a quasi-projective $G$-variety. We prove that the set of points $v\in V$ such that ${\rm dim}(G_v)$ is minimal and $G_v$ is reductive is open. We also prove some results on the existence of principal stabilisers in an appropriate sense.

Cocharacter-closure and spherical buildings

Let $k$ be a field, let $G$ be a reductive $k$-group and $V$ an affine $k$-variety on which $G$ acts. In this note we continue our study of the notion of cocharacter-closed $G(k)$-orbits in $V$. In earlier work we used a rationality condition on the point stabilizer of a $G$-orbit to prove Galois ascent/descent and Levi ascent/descent results concerning cocharacter-closure for the corresponding $G(k)$-orbit in $V$. In the present paper we employ building-theoretic techniques to derive analogous results.

On a question of Külshammer for representations of finite groups in reductive groups

Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of type $G_2$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $2$. We give an example of a finite group $Γ$ with Sylow $2$-subgroup $Γ_2$ and an infinite family of pairwise non-conjugate homomorphisms $ρ\colon Γ\rightarrow G$ whose restrictions to $Γ_2$ are all conjugate. This answers a question of Burkhard Külshammer from 1995. We also give an action of $Γ$ on a connected unipotent group $V$ such that the map of 1-cohomologies ${\rm H}^1(Γ,V)\rightarrow {\rm H}^1(Γ_p,V)$ induced by restriction of 1-cocycles has an infinite fibre.

Distance-bounding facing both mafia and distance frauds: Technical report*

Contactless technologies such as RFID, NFC, and sensor networks are vulnerable to mafia and distance frauds. Both frauds aim at passing an authentication protocol by cheating on the actual distance between the prover and the verifier. To cope these security issues, distance-bounding protocols have been designed. However, none of the current proposals simultaneously resists to these two frauds without requiring additional memory and computation. The situation is even worse considering that just a few distance-bounding protocols are able to deal with the inherent background noise on the communication channels. This article introduces a noise-resilient distance-bounding protocol that resists to both mafia and distance frauds. The security of the protocol is analyzed with respect to these two frauds in both scenarios, namely noisy and noiseless channels. Analytical expressions for the adversary's success probabilities are provided, and are illustrated by experimental results. The analysis, performed in an already existing framework for fairness reasons, demonstrates the undeniable advantage of the introduced lightweight design over the previous proposals.

G-complete reducibility in non-connected groups

In this paper we present an algorithm for determining whether a subgroup H of a non-connected reductive group G is G-completely reducible. The algorithm consists of a series of reductions; at each step, we perform operations involving connected groups, such as checking whether a certain subgroup of G^0 is G^0 -cr. This essentially reduces the problem of determining G-complete reducibility to the connected case.

Dark matter, Elko fields and Weinberg's quantum field theory formalism

The Elko quantum field was introduced by Ahluwalia and Grumiller, who proposed it as a candidate for dark matter. We study the Elko field in Weinberg's formalism for quantum field theory. We prove that if one takes the symmetry group to be the full Poincaré group then the Elko field is not a quantum field in the sense of Weinberg. This confirms results of Ahluwalia, Lee and Schritt, who showed using a different approach that the Elko field does not transform covariantly under rotations and hence has a preferred axis.

The strong Centre Conjecture: an invariant theory approach

The aim of this paper is to describe an approach to a a strengthened form of J. Tits' Centre Conjecture for spherical buildings. This is accomplished by generalizing a fundamental result of G. R. Kempf from Geometric Invariant Theory and interpreting this generalization in the context of spherical buildings. We are able to recapture the conjecture entirely in terms of our generalization of Kempf's notion of a state. We demonstrate the utility of this approach by proving the Centre Conjecture in some special cases.

On metrically complete Bruhat-Tits buildings

Metrical completeness for Bruhat-Tits buildings is a natural and useful condition. In this paper we determine which Bruhat-Tits buildings are metrically complete up to certain cases involving infinite-dimensionality and residue characteristic two.

Complete reducibility and separable field extensions

Let G be a connected reductive linear algebraic group. The aim of this note is to settle a question of J-P. Serre concerning the behaviour of his notion of G-complete reducibility under separable field extensions. Part of our proof relies on the recently established Tits Centre Conjecture for the spherical building of the reductive group G.

Complete Reducibility and Separability

Let G be a reductive linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. A subgroup of G is said to be separable in G if its global and infinitesimal centralizers have the same dimension. We study the interaction between the notion of separability and Serre's concept of G-complete reducibility for subgroups of G. The separability hypothesis appears in many general theorems concerning G-complete reducibility. We demonstrate that many of these results fail without this hypothesis. On the other hand, we prove that if G is a connected reductive group and p is very good for G, then any subgroup of G is separable; we deduce that under these hypotheses on G, a subgroup H of G is G-completely reducible provided the Lie algebra of G is semisimple as an H-module. Recently, Guralnick has proved that if H is a reductive subgroup of G and C is a conjugacy class of G, then the intersection of C and H is a finite union of H-conjugacy classes. For generic p -- when certain extra hypotheses hold, including separability -- this follows from a well-known tangent space argument due to Richardson, but in general, it rests on Lusztig's deep result that a connected reductive group has only finitely many unipotent conjugacy classes. We show that the analogue of Guralnick's result is false if one considers conjugacy classes of n-tuples of elements from H for n > 1.
