The Cartan-Hadamard Theorem for Metric Spaces with Local Geodesic Bicombings

Local-to-global principles are spread all-around in mathematics. The classical Cartan-Hadamard Theorem from Riemannian geometry was generalized by W. Ballmann for metric spaces with non-positive curvature, and by S. Alexander and R. Bishop for locally convex metric spaces. In this paper, we prove the Cartan-Hadamard Theorem in a more general setting, namely for spaces which are not uniquely geodesic but locally possess a suitable selection of geodesics, a so-called convex geodesic bicombing. Furthermore, we deduce a local-to-global theorem for injective (or hyperconvex) metric spaces, saying that under certain conditions a complete, simply-connected, locally injective metric space is injective. A related result for absolute $1$-Lipschitz retracts follows.

Ball Intersection Properties in Metric Spaces

We show that in complete metric spaces, $4$-hyperconvexity is equivalent to finite hyperconvexity. Moreover, every complete, almost $n$-hyperconvex metric space is $n$-hyperconvex. This generalizes among others results of Lindenstrauss and answers questions of Aronszajn-Panitchpakdi. Furthermore, we prove local-to-global results for externally and weakly externally hyperconvex subsets of hyperconvex metric spaces and find sufficient conditions in order for those classes of subsets to be convex with respect to a geodesic bicombing.

Conical geodesic bicombings on subsets of normed vector spaces

We prove existence and uniqueness results for conical geodesic bicombings on subsets of normed vector spaces. Concerning existence, we give a first example of a non-consistent convex geodesic bicombing. Furthermore, we show that under a mild geometric assumption on the norm, a conical bicombing on an open subset of a normed space locally consists of linear geodesics. As an application, we obtain by the use of a Cartan-Hadamard type result that if a closed convex subset of a Banach space has non-empty interior, then it admits a unique consistent conical geodesic bicombing, namely the one given by linear segments.

Weakly Externally Hyperconvex Subsets and Hyperconvex Gluings

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for gluings of hyperconvex metric spaces along weakly externally hyperconvex subsets in order that the resulting space be hyperconvex. This leads to a full characterization of gluings of two isometric copies of the same hyperconvex space. Furthermore, we investigate the case of gluings of finite dimensional hyperconvex linear spaces along linear subspaces. For this purpose, we characterize the convex polyhedra in $l_\infty^n$ which are weakly externally hyperconvex.

Gluing hyperconvex metric spaces

We investigate how to glue hyperconvex (or injective) metric spaces such that the resulting space remains hyperconvex. We give two new criteria, saying that on the one hand gluing along strongly convex subsets and on the other hand gluing along externally hyperconvex subsets leads to hyperconvex spaces. Furthermore, we show by an example that these two cases where gluing works are opposed and cannot be combined.

Injective Metrics on Cube Complexes

For locally finite CAT(0) cube complexes it is known that they are injectively metrizable choosing the $l_\infty$-norm on each cube. In this paper we show that cube complexes which are injective with respect to this metric are always CAT(0). Moreover we give a criterion for finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complexes with finite width to posses an injective metric. As a side result we prove a modification of Bridson's Theorem for cube complexes saying that finite dimensional cube complexes with $l_p$-norms on the cubes are geodesic.
