Spectral properties and enhanced superconductivity in renormalized Migdal-Eliashberg theory

Migdal-Eliashberg theory describes the properties of the normal and superconducting states of electron-phonon mediated superconductors based on a perturbative treatment of the electron-phonon interactions. It is necessary to include both electron and phonon self-energies self-consistently in Migdal-Eliashberg theory in order to match numerically exact results from determinantal quantum Monte Carlo in the adiabatic limit. In this work we provide a method to obtain the real-axis solutions of the Migdal-Eliashberg equations with electron and phonon self-energies calculated self-consistently. Our method avoids the typical challenge of computing cumbersome singular integrals on the real axis and is numerically stable and exhibits fast convergence. Analyzing the resulting real-frequency spectra and self-energies of the two-dimensional Holstein model, we find that self-consistently including the lowest-order correction to the phonon self-energy significantly affects the solution of the Migdal-Eliashberg equations. The calculation captures the broadness of the spectral function, renormalization of the phonon dispersion, enhanced effective electron-phonon coupling strength, minimal increase in the electron effective mass, and the enhancement of superconductivity which manifests as a superconducting ground state despite strong competition with charge-density-wave order. We discuss surprising differences in two common definitions of the electron-phonon coupling strength derived from the electron mass and the density of states, quantities which are accessible through experiments such as angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and electron tunneling. An approximate upper bound on $2Δ/ T_c$ for conventional superconductors mediated by retarded electron-phonon interactions is proposed.

Direct determination of mode-projected electron-phonon coupling in the time-domain

Ultrafast spectroscopies have become an important tool for elucidating the microscopic description and dynamical properties of quantum materials. In particular, by tracking the dynamics of non-thermal electrons, a material's dominant scattering processes -- and thus the many-body interactions between electrons and collective excitations -- can be revealed. Here we present a new method for extracting the electron-phonon coupling strength in the time domain, by means of time and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES). This method is demonstrated in graphite, where we investigate the dynamics of photo-injected electrons at the K point, detecting quantized energy-loss processes that correspond to the emission of strongly-coupled optical phonons. We show that the observed characteristic timescale for spectral-weight-transfer mediated by phonon-scattering processes allows for the direct quantitative extraction of electron-phonon matrix elements, for specific modes, and with unprecedented sensitivity.

Breakdown of Migdal-Eliashberg theory; a determinant quantum Monte Carlo study

The superconducting (SC) and charge-density-wave (CDW) susceptibilities of the two dimensional Holstein model are computed using determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC), and compared with results computed using the Migdal-Eliashberg (ME) approach. We access temperatures as low as 25 times less than the Fermi energy, $E_F$, which are still above the SC transition. We find that the SC susceptibility at low $T$ agrees quantitatively with the ME theory up to a dimensionless electron-phonon coupling $λ_0 \approx 0.4$ but deviates dramatically for larger $λ_0$. We find that for large $λ_0$ and small phonon frequency $ω_0 \ll E_F$ CDW ordering is favored and the preferred CDW ordering vector is uncorrelated with any obvious feature of the Fermi surface.

Emergence of Frohlich polaron from interlayer electron-phonon coupling in van der Waals heterostructure

Van der Waals heterostructures, vertical stacks of layered materials, offer newopportunities for novel quantum phenomena which are absent in their constituent components. Here we report the emergence of polaron quasiparticles at the interface of graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) heterostructures. Using nanospot angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observe zone-corner replicas of h-BN valence band maxima, with energy spacing coincident with the highest phonon energy of the heterostructure|an indication of Frohlich polaron formation due to forward scattering electron-phonon coupling. Parabolic fitting of the h-BN bands yields an effective mass enhancement of ~ 2.3, suggesting an intermediate coupling strength. Our theoretical simulations based on Migdal-Eliashberg theory corroborate the experimental results, allowing the extraction of microscopic physical parameters. Moreover, renormalisation of graphene $π$ band is observed due to the hybridisation with the h-BN band. Our work generalises the polaron study from transition metal oxides to Van derWaals heterostructures with higher material exibility, highlighting interlayer coupling as an extra degree of freedom to explore emergent phenomena.
