Real blocks with dihedral defect groups revisited

The Frobenius--Schur indicators of characters in a real 2-block with dihedral defect groups have been determined by Murray. We show that two infinite families described in his work do not exist and we construct examples for the remaining families. We further present some partial results on Frobenius--Schur indicators of characters in other tame blocks.

Characters, Commutators and Centers of Sylow Subgroups

The character table of a finite group G determines whether |P:P'|=p^2 and whether |P:Z(P)|=p^2, where P is a Sylow p-subgroup of G. To prove the latter, we give a detailed classification of those groups in terms of the generalized Fitting subgroup.

Real characters in nilpotent blocks

We prove that the number of irreducible real characters in a nilpotent block of a finite group is locally determined. We further conjecture that the Frobenius-Schur indicators of those characters can be computed for p=2 in terms of the extended defect group. We derive this from a more general conjecture on the Frobenius-Schur indicator of projective indecomposable characters of 2-blocks with one simple module. This extends results of Murray on 2-blocks with cyclic and dihedral defect groups.

Character table sudokus

It is a fun game to complete a partial character table of a finite group. We show that one can reconstruct a missing row or column from a given table. The proof relies on deep properties of fully ramified characters. Moreover, we extend a classification of groups with a "large" character degree started by Snyder and continued by Durfee and Jensen.

Finite dimensional algebras not arising as blocks of group algebras

We develop new techniques to classify basic algebras of blocks of finite groups over algebraically closed fields of prime characteristic. We apply these techniques to simplify and extend previous classifications by Linckelmann, Murphy and Sambale. In particular, we fully classify blocks with 16-dimensional basic algebra.

A solution to Brauer's Problem 14

It is well known that the number of real irreducible characters of a finite group G coincides with the number of real conjugacy classes of G. Richard Brauer has asked if the number of irreducible characters with Frobenius-Schur indicator 1 can also be expressed in group theoretical terms. We show that this can done by counting solutions of $g_1^2\ldots g_n^2=1$ with $g_1,\ldots,g_n\in G$.

Groups with 2-generated Sylow subgroups and their character tables

Let G be a finite group with Sylow p-subgroup P. We show that the character table of G determines whether P has maximal nilpotency class and whether P is a minimal non-abelian group. The latter result is obtained from a precise classification of the corresponding groups G in terms of their composition factors. For p-constrained groups G we prove further that the character table determines whether P can be generated by two elements.

Solvable conjugacy class graph of groups

In this paper we introduce the graph $Γ_{sc}(G)$ associated with a group $G$, called the solvable conjugacy class graph (abbreviated as SCC-graph), whose vertices are the nontrivial conjugacy classes of $G$ and two distinct conjugacy classes $C, D$ are adjacent if there exist $x \in C$ and $y \in D$ such that $\langle x, y\rangle$ is solvable. We discuss the connectivity, girth, clique number, and several other properties of the SCC-graph. One of our results asserts that there are only finitely many finite groups whose SCC-graph has given clique number~$d$, and we find explicitly the list of such groups with $d=2$.

Alternating sums over pi-subgroups

Dade's conjecture predicts that if p is a prime, then the number of irreducible characters of a finite group of a given p-defect is determined by local subgroups. In this paper we replace $p$ by a set of primes pi and prove a pi-version of Dade's conjecture for pi-separable groups. This extends the (known) p-solvable case of the original conjecture and relates to a pi-version of Alperin's weight conjecture previously established by the authors.

Restrictions of characters in p-solvable groups

Let G be a p-solvable group, P a p-subgroup and chi in Irr(G) such that chi(1)_p \ge |G:P|_p. We prove that the restriction chi_P is a sum of characters induced from subgroups Q\le P such that chi(1)_p=|G:Q|_p. This generalizes previous results by Giannelli--Navarro and Giannelli--Sambale on the number of linear constituents of chi_P. Although this statement does not hold for arbitrary groups, we conjecture a weaker version which can be seen as an extension of Brauer--Nesbitt's theorem on characters of p-defect zero. It also extends a conjecture of Wilde.

On a bound of Cocke and Venkataraman

Let G be a finite group with exactly k elements of largest possible order m. Let q(m) be the product of gcd(m,4) and the odd prime divisors of m. We show that |G|\le q(m)k^2/ϕ(m) where ϕdenotes Euler's totient function. This strengthens a recent result of Cocke and Venkataraman. As an application we classify all finite groups with k<36. This is motivated by a conjecture of Thompson and unifies several partial results in the literature.

Generalized bases of finite groups

Motivated by recent results on the minimal base of a permutation group, we introduce a new local invariant attached to arbitrary finite groups. More precisely, a subset Delta of a finite group G is called a p-base (where p is a prime) if Delta generates a p-group and C_G(Delta) is p-nilpotent. Building on results of Halasi-Maróti, we prove that p-solvable groups possess p-bases of size 3 for every prime p. For other prominent groups we exhibit p-bases of size 2. In fact, we conjecture the existence of p-bases of size 2 for every finite group. Finally, the notion of p-bases is generalized to blocks and fusion systems.

Bounding p-Brauer characters in finite groups with two conjugacy classes of p-elements

Let k(B_0) and l(B_0) respectively denote the number of ordinary and p-Brauer irreducible characters in the principal block B_0 of a finite group G. We prove that, if k(B_0)-l(B_0)=1, then l(B_0)\geq p-1 or else p=11 and l(B_0)=9. This follows from a more general result that for every finite group G in which all non-trivial p-elements are conjugate, l(B_0)\geq p-1 or else p = 11 and G/O_{p'}(G) =11^2:SL(2,5). These results are useful in the study of principal blocks with a few characters. We propose that, in every finite group G of order divisible by p, the number of irreducible Brauer characters in the principal p-block of G is always at least 2\sqrt{p-1}+1-k_p(G), where k_p(G) is the number of conjugacy classes of p-elements of G. This indeed is a consequence of the celebrated Alperin weight conjecture and known results on bounding the number of p-regular classes in finite groups.

Broué's Conjecture for 2-blocks with elementary abelian defect groups of order 32

The first author has recently classified the Morita equivalence classes of 2-blocks B of finite groups with elementary abelian defect group of order 32. In all but three cases he proved that the Morita equivalence class determines the inertial quotient of B. We finish the remaining cases by utilizing the theory of lower defect groups. As a corollary, we verify Broué's Abelian Defect Group Conjecture in this situation.

The reciprocal character of the conjugation action

For a finite group $G$ we investigate the smallest positive integer $e(G)$ such that the map sending $g\in G$ to $e(G)|G:C_G(g)|$ is a generalized character of $G$. It turns out that $e(G)$ is strongly influenced by local data, but behaves irregularly for non-abelian simple groups. We interpret $e(G)$ as an elementary divisor of a certain non-negative integral matrix related to the character table of $G$. Our methods applied to Brauer characters also answers a recent question of Navarro: The $p$-Brauer character table of $G$ determines $|G|_{p'}$.

Character tables and defect groups

Let B be a block of a finite group G with defect group D. We prove that the exponent of the center of D is determined by the character table of G. In particular, we show that D is cyclic if and only if B contains a "large" family of irreducible p-conjugate characters. More generally, for abelian D we obtain an explicit formula for the exponent of D in terms of character values. In small cases even the isomorphism type of D is determined in this situation. Moreover, it can read off from the character table whether |D/D'|=4 where D' denotes the commutator subgroup of D. We also propose a new characterization of nilpotent blocks in terms of the character table.
