Strong Morita Equivalence of Inverse Semigroups

We introduce strong Morita equivalence for inverse semigroups. This notion encompasses Mark Lawson's concept of enlargement. Strongly Morita equivalent inverse semigroups have Morita equivalent universal groupoids in the sense of Paterson and hence strongly Morita equivalent universal and reduced $C^*$-algebras. As a consequence we obtain a new proof of a result of Khoshkam and Skandalis showing that the $C^*$-algebra of an $F$-inverse semigroup is strongly Morita equivalent to a cross product of a commutative $C^*$-algebra by a group.

An Effective Lower Bound for Group Complexity of Finite Semigroups and Automata

The question of computing the group complexity of finite semigroups and automata was first posed in K. Krohn and J. Rhodes, \textit{Complexity of finite semigroups}, Annals of Mathematics (2) \textbf{88} (1968), 128--160, motivated by the Prime Decomposition Theorem of K. Krohn and J. Rhodes, \textit{Algebraic theory of machines, {I}: {P}rime decomposition theorem for finite semigroups and machines}, Transactions of the American Mathematical Society \textbf{116} (1965), 450--464. Here we provide an effective lower bound for group complexity.

A Wreath Product Approach to Classical Subgroup Theorems

We provide elementary proofs of the Nielsen-Schreier Theorem and the Kurosh Subgroup Theorem via wreath products. Our proofs are diagrammatic in nature and work simultaneously in the abstract and profinite categories. A new proof that open subgroups of quasifree profinite groups are quasifree is also given.

The quiver of an algebra associated to the Mantaci-Reutenauer descent algebra and the homology of regular semigroups

We develop the homology theory of the algebra of a regular semigroup, which is a particularly nice case of a quasi-hereditary algebra in good characteristic. Directedness is characterized for these algebras, generalizing the case of semisimple algebras studied by Munn and Ponizovksy. We then apply homological methods to compute (modulo group theory) the quiver of a right regular band of groups, generalizing Saliola's results for a right regular band. Right regular bands of groups come up in the representation theory of wreath products with symmetric groups in much the same way that right regular bands appear in the representation theory of finite Coxeter groups via the Solomon-Tits algebra of its Coxeter complex. In particular, we compute the quiver of Hsiao's algebra, which is related to the Mantaci-Reutenauer descent algebra.

A Combinatorial Property of Ideals in Free Profinite Monoids

We prove every regular element of a free profinite monoid generates a prime ideal; in particular the minimal ideal is prime. The latter result was first proved by Almeida and Volkov using techniques from symbolic dynamics; our proof is elementary.

Cerny's conjecture, synchronizing automata, group representation theory

Let us say that a Cayley graph $Γ$ of a group $G$ of order $n$ is a Cerny Cayley graph if every synchronizing automaton containing $Γ$ as a subgraph with the same vertex set admits a synchronizing word of length at most $(n-1)^2$. In this paper we use the representation theory of groups over the rational numbers to obtain a number of new infinite families of {Č}ern{ý} Cayley graphs.

On the irreducible representations of a finite semigroup

Work of Clifford, Munn and Ponizovski{\uı} parameterized the irreducible representations of a finite semigroup in terms of the irreducible representations of its maximal subgroups. Explicit constructions of the irreducible representations were later obtained independently by Rhodes and Zalcstein and by Lallement and Petrich. All of these approaches make use of Rees's theorem characterizing 0-simple semigroups up to isomorphism. Here we provide a short modern proof of the Clifford-Munn-Ponizovski{\uı} result based on a lemma of J. A. Green, which allows us to circumvent the theory of 0-simple semigroups. A novelty of this approach is that it works over any base ring.

On free profinite subgroups of free profinite monoids

We answer a question of Margolis from 1997 by establishing that the maximal subgroup of the minimal ideal of a finitely generated free profinite monoid is a free profinite group. More generally if $\mathbf H$ is variety of finite groups closed under extension and containing $\mathbb Z/p\mathbb Z$ for infinitely may primes $p$, the corresponding result holds for free pro-$\bar{\mathbf H}$ monoids.

Möbius Functions and Semigroup Representation Theory II: Character formulas and multiplicities

We generalize the character formulas for multiplicities of irreducible constituents from group theory to semigroup theory using Rota's theory of Möbius inversion. The technique works for a large class of semigroups including: inverse semigroups, semigroups with commuting idempotents, idempotent semigroups and semigroups with basic algebras. Using these tools we are able to give a complete description of the spectra of random walks on finite semigroups admitting a faithful representation by upper triangular matrices over the complex numbers. These include the random walks on chambers of hyperplane arrangements studied by Bidigare, Hanlon, Rockmere, Brown and Diaconis. Applications are also given to decomposing tensor powers and exterior products of rook matrix representations of inverse semigroups, generalizing and simplifying earlier results of Solomon for the rook monoid.

The submonoid and rational subset membership problems for graph groups

We show that the membership problem in a finitely generated submonoid of a graph group (also called a right-angled Artin group or a free partially commutative group) is decidable if and only if the independence graph (commutation graph) is a transitive forest. As a consequence we obtain the first example of a finitely presented group with a decidable generalized word problem that does not have a decidable membership problem for finitely generated submonoids. We also show that the rational subset membership problem is decidable for a graph group if and only if the independence graph is a transitive forest, answering a question of Kambites, Silva, and the second author. Finally we prove that for certain amalgamated free products and HNN-extensions the rational subset and submonoid membership problems are recursively equivalent. In particular, this applies to finitely generated groups with two or more ends that are either torsion-free or residually finite.

Aperiodic Pointlikes and Beyond

We prove that if $π$ is a recursive set of primes, then pointlike sets are decidable for the pseudovariety of semigroups whose subgroups are $π$-groups. In particular, when $π$ is the empty set, we obtain Henckell's decidability of aperiodic pointlikes. Our proof, restricted to the case of aperiodic semigroups, is simpler than the original proof.

Representation Theory of Finite Semigroups, Semigroup Radicals and Formal Language Theory

In this paper we characterize the congruence associated to the direct sum of all irreducible representations of a finite semigroup over an arbitrary field, generalizing results of Rhodes for the field of complex numbers. Applications are given to obtain many new results, as well as easier proofs of several results in the literature, involving: triangularizability of finite semigroups; which semigroups have (split) basic semigroup algebras, two-sided semidirect product decompositions of finite monoids; unambiguous products of rational languages; products of rational languages with counter; and Černý's conjecture for an important class of automata.

A Profinite Approach to Stable Pairs

We give a short proof, using profinite techniques, that idempotent pointlikes, stable pairs and triples are decidable for the pseudovariety of aperiodic monoids. Stable pairs are also described for the pseudovariety of all finite monoids.

Closed subgroups of free profinite monoids are projective profinite groups

We prove that the class of closed subgroups of free profinite monoids is precisely the class of projective profinite groups. In particular, the profinite groups associated to minimal symbolic dynamical systems by Almeida are projective. Our result answers a question raised by Lubotzky during the lecture of Almeida at the Fields Workshop on Profinite Groups and Applications, Carleton University, August 2005. We also prove that any finite subsemigroup of a free profinite monoid consists of idempotents.

Automata over a binary alphabet generating free groups of even rank

We construct automata over a binary alphabet with $2n$ states, $n\geq 2$, whose states freely generate a free group of rank $2n$. Combined with previous work, this shows that a free group of every finite rank can be generated by finite automata over a binary alphabet. We also construct free products of cyclic groups of order two via such automata.

Testing spherical transitivity in iterated wreath products of cyclic groups

We give a partial solution a question of Grigorchuk, Nekrashevych, Sushchanskii and Šunik by giving an algorithm to test whether a finite state element of an infinite iterated (permutational) wreath product $\hat G = \mathbb Z/k\mathbb Z\wr \mathbb Z/k\mathbb Z\wr \mathbb Z/k\mathbb Z\wr >...$ of cyclic groups of order $n$ acts spherically transitively. We can also decide whether two finite state spherically transitive elements of $\hat G$ are conjugate. For general infinite iterated wreath products, an algorithm is presented to determine whether two finite state automorphisms have the same image in the abelianization.
