Self-Similar Structure of $k$- and Biperiodic Fibonacci Words

Defining the biperiodic Fibonacci words as a class of words over the alphabet $\{0,1\}$, and two specializations the $k-$Fibonacci and classical Fibonacci words, we provide a self-similar decomposition of these words into overlapping words of the same type. These self-similar decompositions complement the previous literature where self-similarity was indicated but the specific structure of how the pieces interact was left undiscussed.

Spectral Analysis and Dirichlet Forms on Barlow-Evans Fractals

We develop the foundation of the spectral analysis on Barlow-Evans projective limit fractals, or vermiculated spaces, which corresponds to symmetric Markov processes on these spaces. For some new examples, such as the generalized Laakso spaces and a Spierpinski Pâte à Choux, one can develop a complete spectral theory, including the eigenfunction expansions that are analogous to Fourier series. Also, one can construct connected fractal spaces isospectral to the fractal strings of Lapidus and van Frankenhuijsen. Our work is motivated by recent progress in mathematical physics on fractals.

Hausdorff Dimension of Generalized Fibonacci Word Fractals

Fibonacci word fractals are a class of fractals that have been studied recently, though the word they are generated from is more widely studied in combinatorics. The Fibonacci word can be used to draw a curve which possesses self-similarities determined by the recursive structure of the word. The Hausdorff dimension of the scaling limit of the finite Fibonacci word curves is computed for $i$-Fibonacci curves and any drawing angle between $0$ and $π/2$.

Witt-Burnside functor attached to $\mathbf{Z}_p^2$ and $p$-adic Lipschitz continuous functions

Dress and Siebeneicher gave a significant generalization of the construction of Witt vectors, by producing for any profinite group $G$, a ring-valued functor $\mathbf{W}_G$. This paper gives a concrete interpretation of the rings $\mathbf{W}_{\mathbf{Z}_p^2}(k)$ where $k$ is a field of characteristic $p > 0$ in terms of rings of Lipschitz continuous functions on the $p$-adic upper half plane $\mathbf{P}^1(\mathbf{Q}_p)$. As a consequence we show that the Krull dimensions of the rings $\mathbf{W}_{\mathbf{Z}_p^d}(k)$ are infinite for $d \geq 2$ and we show the Teichmüller representatives form an analogue of the van der Put basis for continuous functions on $\mathbf{Z}_p$.

Bond percolation on a non-p.c.f. Sierpiński Gasket, iterated barycentric subdivision of a triangle, and Hexacarpet

We investigate bond percolation on the iterated barycentric subdivision of a triangle, the hexacarpet, and the non-p.c.f. Sierpinski gasket. With the use of the diamond fractal, we are able to bound the critical probability of percolation on the non-p.c.f. gasket and the iterated barycentric subdivision of a triangle from above by 0.282. We then show how both the gasket and hexacarpet fractals are related via the iterated barycentric subdivisions of a triangle: the two spaces exhibit duality properties although they are not themselves dual graphs. Finally we show the existence of a non-trivial phase transition on all three graphs.

Existence of a Meromorphic Extension of Spectral Zeta Functions on Fractals

We investigate the existence of the meromorphic extension of the spectral zeta function of the Laplacian on self-similar fractals using the classical results of Kigami and Lapidus (based on the renewal theory) and new results of Hambly and Kajino based on the heat kernel estimates and other probabilistic techniques. We also formulate conjectures which hold true in the examples that have been analyzed in the existing literature.

The Casimir Effect on Laakso Sapces

We explore the properties of an analog to the Casimir effect on Laakso spaces such as the dependence on the separation of the plates and boundary effects. We also mention some results on the influence of complex poles in the spectral zeta function over finite approximations to Laakso spaces.

Disconnected Julia sets and gaps in the spectrum of Laplacians on symmetric finitely ramified fractals

It is known that Laplacian operators on many fractals have gaps in their spectra. This fact precludes the possibility that a Weyl-type ratio can have a limit and is also a key ingredient in proving that the Fourier series on such fractals can have better convergence results than in the classical setting. In this paper we prove that the existence of gaps is equivalent to the total disconnectedness of the Julia set of the spectral decimation function for the class of fully symmetric p.c.f. fractals, and for self-similar fully symmetric finitely ramified fractals with regular harmonic structure. We also formulate conjectures related to geometry of finitely ramified fractals with spectral gaps, to complex spectral dimensions, and to convergence of Fourier series on such fractals.

Quantum Mechanics on Laakso Spaces

We first review the spectrum of the Laplacian operator on a general Laakso Space before considering modified Hamiltonians for the infinite square well, parabola, and Coulomb potentials. Additionally, we compute the spectrum for the Laplacian and its multiplicities when certain regions of a Laakso space are compressed or stretched and calculate the Casimir force experienced by two uncharged conducting plates by imposing physically relevant boundary conditions and then analytically regularizing the result. Lastly, we derive a general formula for the spectral zeta function and its derivative for Laakso spaces with strict self-similar structure before listing explicit spectral values for cases of interest.

Uniqueness of locally symmetric Brownian motion on Laakso spaces

We take the spaces introduced by Laakso in 2000 and building on the work of Barlow, Bass, Kumagai, and Teplyaev prove the existence and uniqueness of a local symmetry invariant diffusion via heat kernel estimates. This work also builds upon works of Cheeger, Barlow and Bass, as well as the author.

Spectrum and Heat Kernel Asymptotics on General Laakso Spaces

We introduce a method of constructing a general Laakso space while calculating the spectrum and multiplicities of the Laplacian operator on it. Using this information, we found the leading term of the trace of the heat kernel of a Laakso space and its spectral dimension.

Dirichlet Forms on Laakso and Barlow-Evans Fractals of Arbitrary Dimension

In this paper we explore two constructions of the same family of metric measure spaces. The first construction was introduced by Laakso in 2000 where he used it as an example that Poincaré inequalities can hold on spaces of arbitrary Hausdorff dimension. This was proved using minimal generalized upper gradients. Following Cheeger's work these upper gradients can be used to define a Sobolev space. We show that this leads to a Dirichlet form. The second construction was introduced by Barlow and Evans in 2004 as a way of producing exotic spaces along with Markov processes from simpler spaces and processes. We show that for the correct base process in the Barlow Evans construction that this Markov process corresponds to the Dirichlet form derived from the minimal generalized upper gradients.

Modified Hanoi Towers Groups and Limit Spaces

We introduce the $k$-peg Hanoi automorphisms and Hanoi self-similar groups, a generalization of the Hanoi Towers groups, and give conditions for them to be contractive. We analyze the limit spaces of a particular family of contracting Hanoi groups, $H_c^{(k)}$, and show that these are the unique maximal contracting Hanoi groups under a suitable symmetry condition. Finally, we provide partial results on the contraction of Hanoi groups with weaker symmetry.

Eigenmodes of a Laplacian on Some Laakso Spaces

We analyze the spectrum of a self-adjoint operator on a Laakso space using the projective limit construction originally given by Barlow and Evans. We will use the hierarchical cell structure induced by the choice of approximating quantum graphs to calculate the spectrum with multiplicities. We also extend the method for using the hierarchical cell structure to more general projective limits beyond Laakso spaces.

Vibration Spectra of the $m$-Tree Fractal

We introduce a family of post-critically finite fractal trees indexed by the number of branches they possess. Then we produce a Laplacian operator on graph approximations to these fractals and use spectral decimation to describe the spectrum of the Laplacian on these trees. Lastly we consider the behavior of the spectrum as the number of branches increases.

The Double Bubble Problem on the Flat Two-Torus

We characterize the perimeter-minimizing double bubbles on all flat two-tori and, as corollaries, on the flat infinite cylinder and the flat infinite strip with free boundary. Specifically, we show that there are five distinct types of minimizers on flat two-tori, depending on the areas to be enclosed.
