Refractive indices of Y$_2$SiO$_5$ in the near-infrared

Y$_2$SiO$_5$ is a reference birefringent material for optical quantum technologies. The refractive index is primarily known in the visible spectrum, whereas this crystal is also used in the near-infrared. We begin by analysing historical measurements, as well as the modelling proposed at the time. The absence of refractive index tabulated values in the near- and mid-infrared ranges motivated us to carry out independent measurements. Using interferometric techniques in the telecom wavelength range, we demonstrate the ability to determine the principal refractive indices and propose a model spanning a broad spectral range based on Sellmeier equations for which we explicitly give the coefficients and discuss the achievable accuracy. Conversely, as an illustration, white-light interference enables us to precisely determine the thickness of a Y$_2$SiO$_5$ thin film on the order of ten micrometers.

Criteria on quantum fluctuations of vacuum and photons influence in Spontaneous-Parametric Down-Conversion and Four-Wave-Mixing

This article is a theoretical and quantitative exploration of the limit regarding the pump intensity between the two regimes of spontaneous-parametric down-conversion (SPDC) as well as of four-wave-mixing (FWM) in the framework of a semi-classical model and analytical calculations. A dimensionless parameter has been defined at this limit, corresponding to the photon-pairs flux per frequency unit: it has been found equal to 0.369. The ratio between the electric field of the generated photons and the quantum fluctuations of vacuum calculated at the limit is equal to 1.718. These quantitative results confirm that below the limit, the pump photon splitting leading to photon-pairs can be considered as spontaneous, i.e. mainly seeded by the quantum fluctuations of vacuum, while it is stimulated by the generated signal and idler photons above the limit, which corresponds to an optical parametric amplification regime. Our calculations also show that this limit can be easily reached in the case of SPDC according to the typical values of non-linearities and available crystal dimensions. In the case of FWM, it would be only possible in kilometric optical fibers. This corpus is a useful tool box for designing further quantum experiments performed from either side of the limit, as well as at the limit it-self where the influence of the quantum fluctuations of vacuum and of the generated photons should have the same weight. Furthermore, the quantum significance of the numerical values of the two criteria defined here remains to be established, which should motivate future theoretical quantum studies.

Semi-classical modelling of second-order spontaneous down-conversion measured over 10 decades of pump intensity in a type II phase-matched KTP crystal

We performed a second-order spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) experiment in a Type II phase-matched KTiOPO4 crystal pumped at 532 nm giving birth to a signal beam at 1037 nm and an idler one at 1092 nm along the x-axis of the crystal. Three pump sources have been used: in the continuous-wave, nanosecond (200 ns, 1 kHz) and picosecond (15 ps, 10 Hz) regimes. That allowed us to cover a pump intensity range from 2.4 W.cm-2 to 3.7 GW.cm-2 which led to the generation of twin photons with a flux from 1.1x104 Hz to 1.2x1021 Hz, respectively, the corresponding quantum efficiencies being of 1.8x10-11 and 9.2x10-4. We identified two SPDC regimes regarding the pump intensity: one below 30 MW.cm-2 for which the flux increases linearly, and the other one above 30 MW.cm-2 for which the flux behaves exponentially. We proposed a semi-classical model under the undepleted pump approximation based on both the quantum fluctuations of vacuum for the seeding of the process and a propagation step ensured by classical fields, which allowed a satisfying description of these two regimes, with a much better agreement at high intensity than the quantum models based on the nonlinear momentum or the nonlinear Hamiltonian operators.

Demonstration of site-selective angular-resolved absorption spectroscopy of the $^{4}I_{15/2} \rightarrow $$^{4}I_{13/2}$ erbium transition in the monoclinic crystal Y$_2$SiO$_5$

We study the angular dependence in polarized light of the optical absorption for the Er$^{3+}$ transition $^{4}I_{15/2} \rightarrow $$^{4}I_{13/2}$ in Y$_2$SiO$_5$, revealing thus the associated anisotropy and the orientation of the related absorption principal directions in the dielectric plan perpendicular to the monoclinic axis b. The measurements are performed at low temperature. This allows us to isolate the lowest crystal field levels in the ground and excited states. We spectrally resolve and independently characterize the two yttrium substitution sites in the Y$_2$SiO$_5$ matrix. The absorption tensor components cannot be unambiguously determined yet while only considering the investigated dielectric plane. Still, measurements remarkably demonstrate that this transition of interest well resolved at low temperature is not only a magnetic-dipole allowed transition but indeed a hybrid electric-magnetic transition.

Entangled-photon decision maker

The competitive multi-armed bandit (CMAB) problem is related to social issues such as maximizing total social benefits while preserving equality among individuals by overcoming conflicts between individual decisions, which could seriously decrease social benefits. The study described herein provides experimental evidence that entangled photons physically resolve the CMAB in the 2-arms 2-players case, maximizing the social rewards while ensuring equality. Moreover, we demonstrated that deception, or outperforming the other player by receiving a greater reward, cannot be accomplished in a polarization-entangled-photon-based system, while deception is achievable in systems based on classical polarization-correlated photons with fixed polarizations. Besides, random polarization-correlated photons have been studied numerically and shown to ensure equality between players and deception prevention as well, although the CMAB maximum performance is reduced as compared with entangled photon experiments. Autonomous alignment schemes for polarization bases were also experimentally demonstrated based only on decision conflict information observed by an individual without communications between players. This study paves a way for collective decision making in uncertain dynamically changing environments based on entangled quantum states, a crucial step toward utilizing quantum systems for intelligent functionalities.
