Anisotropic Quantum Spin Hall Effect, Spin-Orbital Textures and Mott Transition

We investigate the interplay between topological effects and Mott physics in two dimensions on a graphene-like lattice, via a tight-binding model containing an anisotropic spin-orbit coupling on the next-nearest-neighbour links and the Hubbard interaction. We thoroughly analyze the resulting phases, namely a topological band insulator phase or anisotropic quantum Spin Hall phase until moderate interactions, a Néel and Spiral phase at large interactions in the Mott regime, as well as the formation of a spin-orbital texture in the bulk at the Mott transition. The emergent magnetic orders at large interactions are analyzed through a spin wave analysis and mathematical arguments. At weak interactions, by analogy with the Kane-Mele model, the system is described through a Z_2 topological invariant. In addition, we describe how the anisotropic spin-orbit coupling already produces an exotic spin texture at the edges. The physics at the Mott transition is described in terms of a U(1) slave rotor theory. Taking into account gauge fluctuations around the mean-field saddle point solution, we show how the spin texture now proliferates into the bulk above the Mott critical point. The latter emerges from the response of the spinons under the insertion of monopoles and this becomes more pronounced as the spin-orbit coupling becomes prevalent. We discuss implications of our predictions for thin films of the iridate compound Na2IrO3 and also graphene-like systems.

Multicomponent Skyrmion lattices and their excitations

We study quantum Hall ferromagnets with a finite density topologically charged spin textures in the presence of internal degrees of freedom such as spin, valley, or layer indices, so that the system is parametrised by a $d$-component complex spinor field. In the absence of anisotropies, we find formation of a hexagonal Skyrmion lattice which completely breaks the underlying SU(d) symmetry. The ground state charge density modulation, which inevitably exists in these lattices, vanishes exponentially in $d$. We compute analytically the complete low-lying excitation spectrum, which separates into $d^{2}-1$ gapless acoustic magnetic modes and a magnetophonon. We discuss the role of effective mass anisotropy for SU(3)-valley Skyrmions relevant for experiments with AlAs quantum wells. Here, we find a transition, which breaks a six-fold rotational symmetry of a triangular lattice, followed by a formation of a square lattice at large values of anisotropy strength.

Multi-mode solitons in the classical Dicke-Jaynes-Cummings-Gaudin Model

We present a detailed analysis of the classical Dicke-Jaynes-Cummings-Gaudin integrable model, which describes a system of $n$ spins coupled to a single harmonic oscillator. We focus on the singularities of the vector-valued moment map whose components are the $n+1$ mutually commuting conserved Hamiltonians. The level sets of the moment map corresponding to singular values may be viewed as degenerate and often singular Arnold-Liouville torii. A particularly interesting example of singularity corresponds to unstable equilibrium points where the rank of the moment map is zero, or singular lines where the rank is one. The corresponding level sets can be described as a reunion of smooth strata of various dimensions. Using the Lax representation, the associated spectral curve and the separated variables, we show how to construct explicitely these level sets. A main difficulty in this task is to select, among possible complex solutions, the physically admissible family for which all the spin components are real. We obtain explicit solutions to this problem in the rank zero and one cases. Remarkably this corresponds exactly to solutions obtained previously by Yuzbashyan and whose geometrical meaning is therefore revealed. These solutions can be described as multi-mode solitons which can live on strata of arbitrary large dimension. In these solitons, the energy initially stored in some excited spins (or atoms) is transferred at finite times to the oscillator mode (photon) and eventually comes back into the spin subsystem. But their multi-mode character is reflected by a large diversity in their shape, which is controlled by the choice of the initial condition on the stratum.

Topologically decoherence-protected qubits with trapped ions

We show that trapped ions can be used to simulate a highly symmetrical Hamiltonian with eingenstates naturally protected against local sources of decoherence. This Hamiltonian involves long range coupling between particles and provides a more efficient protection than nearest neighbor models discussed in previous works. Our results open the perspective of experimentally realizing in controlled atomic systems, complex entangled states with decoherence times up to nine orders of magnitude longer than isolated quantum systems.
