Generating random density matrices

We study various methods to generate ensembles of random density matrices of a fixed size N, obtained by partial trace of pure states on composite systems. Structured ensembles of random pure states, invariant with respect to local unitary transformations are introduced. To analyze statistical properties of quantum entanglement in bi-partite systems we analyze the distribution of Schmidt coefficients of random pure states. Such a distribution is derived in the case of a superposition of k random maximally entangled states. For another ensemble, obtained by performing selective measurements in a maximally entangled basis on a multi--partite system, we show that this distribution is given by the Fuss-Catalan law and find the average entanglement entropy. A more general class of structured ensembles proposed, containing also the case of Bures, forms an extension of the standard ensemble of structureless random pure states, described asymptotically, as N \to \infty, by the Marchenko-Pastur distribution.

On polynomial integrals over the orthogonal group

We consider integrals of type $\int_{O_n}u_{11}^{a_1}... u_{1n}^{a_n}u_{21}^{b_1}... u_{2n}^{b_n} du$, with respect to the Haar measure on the orthogonal group. We establish several remarkable invariance properties satisfied by such integrals, by using combinatorial methods. We present as well a general formula for such integrals, as a sum of products of factorials.

Eigenvalue and Entropy Statistics for Products of Conjugate Random Quantum Channels

Using the graphical calculus and integration techniques introduced by the authors, we study the statistical properties of outputs of products of random quantum channels for entangled inputs. In particular, we revisit and generalize models of relevance for the recent counterexamples to the minimum output entropy additivity problems. Our main result is a classification of regimes for which the von Neumann entropy is lower on average than the elementary bounds that can be obtained with linear algebra techniques.

Sum--of--squares results for polynomials related to the Bessis--Moussa--Villani conjecture

We show that the polynomial S_{m,k}(A,B), that is the sum of all words in noncommuting variables A and B having length m and exactly k letters equal to B, is not equal to a sum of commutators and Hermitian squares in the algebra R where X^2=A and Y^2=B, for all even values of m and k with 6 <= k <= m-10, and also for (m,k)=(12,6). This leaves only the case (m,k)=(16,8) open. This topic is of interest in connection with the Lieb--Seiringer formulation of the Bessis--Moussa--Villani conjecture, which asks whether the trace of S_{m,k}(A,B)) is nonnegative for all positive semidefinite matrices A and B. These results eliminate the possibility of using "descent + sum-of-squares" to prove the BMV conjecture. We also show that S_{m,4}(A,B) is equal to a sum of commutators and Hermitian squares in R when m is even and not a multiple of 4, which implies that the trace of S_{m,4}(A,B) is nonnegative for all Hermitian matrices A and B, for these values of m.

Random graph states, maximal flow and Fuss-Catalan distributions

For any graph consisting of $k$ vertices and $m$ edges we construct an ensemble of random pure quantum states which describe a system composed of $2m$ subsystems. Each edge of the graph represents a bi-partite, maximally entangled state. Each vertex represents a random unitary matrix generated according to the Haar measure, which describes the coupling between subsystems. Dividing all subsystems into two parts, one may study entanglement with respect to this partition. A general technique to derive an expression for the average entanglement entropy of random pure states associated to a given graph is presented. Our technique relies on Weingarten calculus and flow problems. We analyze statistical properties of spectra of such random density matrices and show for which cases they are described by the free Poissonian (Marchenko-Pastur) distribution. We derive a discrete family of generalized, Fuss-Catalan distributions and explicitly construct graphs which lead to ensembles of random states characterized by these novel distributions of eigenvalues.

On orthogonal matrices maximizing the 1-norm

For $U\in O(N)$ we have $||U||_1\leq N\sqrt{N}$, with equality if and only if $U=H/\sqrt{N}$, with $H$ Hadamard matrix. Motivated by this remark, we discuss in this paper the algebraic and analytic aspects of the computation of the maximum of the 1-norm on O(N). The main problem is to compute the $k$-th moment of the 1-norm, with $k\to\infty$, and we present a number of general comments in this direction.

Asymptotics of unitary and othogonal matrix integrals

In this paper, we prove that in small parameter regions, arbitrary unitary matrix integrals converge in the large $N$ limit and match their formal expansion. Secondly we give a combinatorial model for our matrix integral asymptotics and investigate examples related to free probability and the HCIZ integral. Our convergence result also leads us to new results of smoothness of microstates. We finally generalize our approach to integrals over the othogonal group.

Free Bessel laws

We introduce and study a remarkable family of real probability measures $π_{st}$, that we call free Bessel laws. These are related to the free Poisson law $π$ via the formulae $π_{s1}=π^{\boxtimes s}$ and $π_{1t}=π^{\boxplus t}$. Our study includes: definition and basic properties, analytic aspects (supports, atoms, densities), combinatorial aspects (functional transforms, moments, partitions), and a discussion of the relation with random matrices and quantum groups.

Integration over the Pauli quantum group

We prove that the Pauli representation of the quantum permutation algebra $A_s(4)$ is faithful. This provides the second known model for a free quantum algebra. We use this model for performing some computations, with the main result that at the level of laws of diagonal coordinates, the Lebesgue measure appears between the Dirac mass and the free Poisson law.

On a reduction procedure for Horn inequalities in finite von Neumann algebras

We consider the analogues of the Horn inequalities in finite von Neumann algebras, which concern the possible spectral distributions of sums $a+b$ of self--adjoint elements $a$ and $b$ in a finite von Neumann algebra. It is an open question whether all of these Horn inequalities must hold in all finite von Neumann algebras, and this is related to Connes' embedding problem. For each choice of integers $1\le r\le n$, there is a set $T^n_r$ of Horn triples, and the Horn inequalities are in one-to-one correspondence with $\cup_{1\le r\le n}T^n_r$. We consider a property P$_n$, analogous to one introduced by Therianos and Thompson in the case of matrices, amounting to the existence of projections having certain properties relative to arbitrary flags, which guarantees that a given Horn inequality holds in all finite von Neumann algebras. It is an open question whether all Horn triples in $T^n_r$ have property P$_n$. Certain triples in $T^n_r$ can be reduced to triples in $T^{n-1}_r$ by an operation we call {\em TT--reduction}. We show that property P$_n$ holds for the original triple if property P$_{n-1}$ holds for the reduced one. We then characterize the TT--irreducible Horn triples in $T^n_3$, for arbitrary $n$, and for those LR--minimal ones (namely, those having Littlewood--Richardson coefficient equal to 1), we perform a construction of projections with respect to flags in arbitrary von Neumann algebras in order to prove property P$_n$ for them. This shows that all LR--minimal triples in $\cup_{n\ge3}T^n_3$ have property P$_n$, and so that the corresponding Horn inequalities hold in all finite von Neumann algebras.

Representations of Lie groups and random matrices

We study the asymptotics of representations of a fixed compact Lie group. We prove that the limit behavior of a sequence of such representations can be described in terms of certain random matrices; in particular operations on representations (for example: tensor product, restriction to a subgroup) correspond to some natural operations on random matrices (respectively: sum of independent random matrices, taking the corners of a random matrix). Our method of proof is to treat the canonical block matrix associated to a representation as a random matrix with non-commutative entries.

A Linearization of Connes' Embedding Problem

We show that Connes' embedding problem for II_1-factors is equivalent to a statement about distributions of sums of self-adjoint operators with matrix coefficients. This is an application of a linearization result for finite von Neumann algebras, which is proved using asymptotic second order freeness of Gaussian random matrices.

The hyperoctahedral quantum group

We consider the hypercube in $\mathbb R^n$, and show that its quantum symmetry group is a $q$-deformation of $O_n$ at $q=-1$. Then we consider the graph formed by $n$ segments, and show that its quantum symmetry group is free in some natural sense. This latter quantum group, denoted $H_n^+$, enlarges Wang's series $S_n^+,O_n^+,U_n^+$.

Integration over quantum permutation groups

We find a combinatorial formula for the Haar measure of quantum permutation groups. This leads to a dynamic formula for laws of diagonal coefficients, explaining the Poisson/free Poisson convergence result for characters.

Second Order Freeness and Fluctuations of Random Matrices, III. Higher order freeness and free cumulants

We extend the relation between random matrices and free probability theory from the level of expectations to the level of all correlation functions (which are classical cumulants of traces of products of the matrices). We introduce the notion of "higher order freeness" and develop a theory of corresponding free cumulants. We show that two independent random matrix ensembles are free of arbitrary order if one of them is unitarily invariant. We prove R-transform formulas for second order freeness. Much of the presented theory relies on a detailed study of the properties of "partitioned permutations".

Integration over compact quantum groups

We find a combinatorial formula for the Haar functional of the orthogonal and unitary quantum groups. As an application, we consider diagonal coefficients of the fundamental representation, and we investigate their spectral measures.
